The following thread contains information about admissions to the various undergraduate dental schools in Australia. The information was compiled by (the awesome ^_^) hoscar01 and L337. We hope you find the information helpful as it will be soon added to the Wiki resources of MSO. Important dates
  • Applications for the 2008 UMAT can be lodged from April 2008.
  • The 2008 UMAT will be held on Wednesday the 30th July 2008.
  • Applications for the bachelor of Dental Surgery at the University of Adelaide to be lodged through SATAC close August 31 (early application deadline).
  • For 2007 entry letters informorming candidates whether or not they had been offered an oral assessment were posted during the week beginning 1 October 2007.
  • For 2008 admissions main round of offers released through Satac: Tuesday 15 January 2008

Prerecquisities


"Applicants must obtain a Subject Achievement score in the range of 10-20 inclusive in at least two SACE Stage 2 science subjects or equivalent, one chosen from Chemistry, Mathematical Studies, Specialist Mathematics or Physics or equivalent, and one chosen from Biology, Chemistry, Geology or Physics or equivalent."

School leaver applicants must achieve an Adelaide Tertiary Entrance Rank (TER) or quuivalent of 90 or higher. Tertiary applicants must achieve a credit or higher standard for tertiary studies spanning one or more years.


Application Procedure
  1. Apply for and sit the Undergraduate Medicine and Health Sciences Admission test (UMAT). Applications for the 2008 UMAT can be lodged online at http://umatweb.acer.edu.au/ from April 2008. The 2008 UMAT will be held on Wednesday the 30th July 2008.
  2. Apply through the South Australian Tertiary Admissions Centre (SATAC) before August 31 (early application deadline).
  3. Attend a oral assessment of approx 20 minutes at the university if invited. Applicants will be invited to attend oral assessments on the bases of their UMAT score only. For 2007 letters informorming candidates whether or not they had been offered an oral assessment were posted during the week beginning 1 October 2007.

Selection procedure


All applicants who meet the academic threshold (view prerecquisites) and who are sucessfull in attaining an interview based soley on their UMAT score, will be ranked according to the score attained in the oral assesment. Offers of places will be given to the highest ranked applicants. Applicants with the same oral assessment score will be further ranked according to their UMAT score.


2008 Offer information:


Offers are released by SATAC in three rounds; December, January and February offer rounds. Manual manual offers are released after these dates if necessary.
  • December Round (for applicants who have deferred): Thursday 13 December 2007
  • January Round (main round offers): Tuesday 15 January 2008
  • February Round (second round offers): Monday 4 February 2008

Number of Places

In 2008 58 Commonwealth Supported Places will be available. Of these 58 places, some are reserved for applicants under the University's Special Entry and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Access Schemes. Some full fee places may also be available.​

  • September 28 (4:30pm): Timely applications for the bachelor of Dental Science at the University of Queensland to be lodged through QTAC
  • Friday 14 December 2007 - Due date for all non-standard applicants to lodge non-timely QTAC applications and change QTAC preferences for guaranteed inclusion in the January offer round.

Selection procedure

Applicants must meet the academic threshold of an OP 1 (equivalent TER/UAI of 99+)/equivalent GPA. UMAT scores are used as a secondary selector.

"The major round cut-offs (january offer round) for entry into the BDSc program in 2007 were:

(1) Entry rank 99 (OP 1/GPA 5.8 Group I tertiary institution*, GPA 6.5 Group II institution**) with minimum UMAT score of 170 for a Commonwealth Supported place;
(2) Entry rank 99 (OP 1/GPA 5.8 Group I tertiary institution*, GPA 6.5 Group II institution**) with minimum UMAT score of 156 for a domestic full-fee-paying place;
(3) Entry rank 99 (OP 1/GPA 6.63 Group I tertiary institution*) for an international full-fee paying place. * Group I institutions (Group of Eight research-intensive universities) include University of Queensland, University of Sydney, University of NSW, Australian National University (ANU), University of Melbourne, Monash University, University of Adelaide, and University of Western Australia.

** Group II institutions in Queensland include Queensland University of Technology (QUT), Griffith University, James Cook University, University of Southern Queensland, University of Sunshine Coast, University of Central Queensland, Australian Catholic University. Important dates for standard applicants (2008 dates)
  • 28 Sept:
    Closing date for applications to TISC.
  • Closing date for submission of Eligibility for Consideration as a Rural Standard Applicant (if applicable)
  • 7 Nov: Closing date for WA high schools to submit School Based Assessments for WA Standard applicants
  • Mid Nov: Interstate applicants advised of eligibility for interview​
  • Post Final Yr 12 exam (TEE) (Nov):

  • 25 September – 6 October Interview Period

  • 22-25 Jan 2008 GPA reserve Interview Period (if required)
Prerequisites:
  • English or English Literature (or ESL for eligible students)
  • Physics, Chemistry (assumed knowlege to TEE level), Applicable Mathematics and/or Calculus Mathematics are strongly recommended
Applicants need a tertiary enrance rank (TER) of equivalent of 96.00 or better in order to be eligible for entry into the Bachelor of Dental Science Course.​

Application Procedure
  1. Apply for and sit the Undergraduate Medicine and Health Sciences Admission test (UMAT). Applications for the 2008 UMAT can be lodged online at http://umatweb.acer.edu.au/ from April 2008. The 2008 UMAT will be held on Wednesday the 30th July 2008.
  2. WA School leavers are adviced to submit a School Based Assessment (SBA) form as an indicator of academic performance to their school by August 3. The school must submit the form by November 7.
  3. Apply through the Tertiary Institution Service Centre (TISC) before the last friday in September (late applications not accepted).
  4. Attend an interview at the University of Western Australia if selected
  5. Respond to first or second-round TISC offers as neccessary.
Selection procedure

WA Standard applicants:

Invitations for main round of interviews are based soley on UMAT scores, and an expectation that the applicant will achieve a TER of 96.00 or greater (indicated by SBA form - view application procedure). Applicants whoes SBA does not indicate a TER of 96.00 but who have met the UMAT threshold for an interview will be placed on a TER reserve list, and will be invited to an early january interview if a TER of at least 96.00 is ultimately obtained.​

Non-WA Standard applicants​

Invitations for the December round of interviews are based only on the applicants UMAT score. Final ranking will be based upon performance in the UMAT, performance at interview and academic results and will be weighted 1:2:2 respectively. Note that as a prerecquisite of the course interstate applicants must also obtain a TER or eqivalent of 96.00.​

WA and Interstate Non-standard applicants:

Of candidates who have a current Grade Point Average (GPA) above the threshold of 5.5 or better, invitations for main round of interviews are based soley on UMAT scores. Applicants who do not have a GPA of at least 5.5 at the time of application but who have met the minimum UMAT threshold for an interview will be placed on a GPA reserve list. If an applicant on the GPA reserve list ultimately obtains a GPA of 5.5 , they will be invited for a January interview.

All applicants:​

Final ranking to determine offers will be based upon performance in the UMAT, performance at interview and academic results and will be weighted 1:2:2 respectively.*

2008 Offer information:
  • 17 Jan: First round offers made (some offers held back to allow for Late Jan interviewees) through TISC
  • 5 Feb: Second round offers made through TISC
Number of Places

50 Commonwealth Supported Places; 35 standard places and 15 non-standard places. There are no fee paying places at UWA.​
