Best Internal Medicine book with strong pathopysiology sections?

Harrison's is, from what I know, the gold standard. You can also look at 'Current Medical Diagnosis and Treatment' which is updated and published each year. Is this for exams or to prepare for clinical practice? For exams, I suggest to look at your lectures and recommended texts. For clinical...

    First aid course

St John's makes sure that you are able to apply the principles of First Aid. You can however get cheaper and shorter first aid courses from other companies. If you want a good grounding in first aid then I would definitely consider St John. I've done the St John course and became a volunteer as...

Clinical Learning drugs on the wards

How long have you been revising your previous cards? It might take time in order to see an improvement. For me, learning drugs and micro is a lot of repetition. I would continue what you are doing currently. Therapeutic Guidelines (eTG), which might be accessible from your university portal...

Drugs used to increase mental focus

Hmm, maybe if we found out more about 'determination' and how it is related to addiction. Maybe the key to preventing addiction is increasing the feeling of euphoria in conjunction with mechanisms which control it i.e. learning to only take to cookie from the cookie jar only when you've earned...

Drugs used to increase mental focus

Of course, something to ponder though. Maybe part of an anti-nicotine therapy to find a selective substrate that mimics the concentration effects? Maybe even applications in learning disorders. It could be like supplement like fish oil in 10-20 years time. Yes, world pharmacological domination. =D

Drugs used to increase mental focus

Out of curiosity, from inconspicuous sources, I have been told that having a cigarette can increase your concentration. I'm wondering whether this is one of the effects of nicotine or a result of satisfying an addiction.

[Undergrad] What is the best tip you would give...?

Try not to be too obsessed about medicine, it all sounds good and 'respectful' but you will have a lot of pressure upon you and it is, by no means, everyones cut of tea. Make sure it makes you happy, it gives me an adrenaline rush to learn to learn how the body works its weird and quirky ways...

what is your opinion of students who want to study MED but

I don't believe high school itself sets you up as an educated person i.e. an independent thinker but it did serve as a 'practise ground' for study habits that I employ now. That won't be for everyone and I definitely agree that there is considerable guidance, especially from teachers.

    Book you are currently reading

I am currently reading 'Gray's Anatomy for Students 2E' but I was reading 'Cutting for Stone' by Abraham Verghese. Amazingly well defined characters with an incredible description of a very unique life.

what is your opinion of students who want to study MED but

There is physics in med? Can someone please elaborate? Are we talking oncotic vs hydrostatic pressures? flow in a capillary and resistance? do we need to know the biomechanic principles (such as center of gravity) for the knee? My 2 cents is that high school is intended to teach you a method...

[Undergrad] Studying medicine overseas a good backup?

I think there is an exchange program in Kuala Lumpur where you spend 2.5 years there and the remaining 2.5 at Monash. In the end you get a Monash med degree. The atar cut off was 95 from when I considered it last year. However I wouldn't put it as a viable option. Singapore, is graduating...

    Pre-Clinical Preparing for first year

I'm in the "don't bother" boat. It is difficult to learn something without the holistic profile given during the semester with your labs, tutes and pbls. I would suggest you read all the books that are not related to med. Later next year, you are going to be saturated with med text to read so i...

Volunteering, Community Involvement and Work Experience Ideas

That is amazing that you have done so much volunteer work. It's great to know that you are doing something you love =) Another good volunteer service is St John Ambulance. You get training as an "Advanced Responder" and you go out on a sunday or saturday to provide first aid at a fair or...
