2011 Griffith Dentistry!

well what they told me was that these early dates are for other course, e.g. Music. They said that Dent will be offered in Jan, and that some applicants may recieve a call from the Dent School at GU before.
If you do happen to receive an early offer directly from the Dent School at GU, is there still the option of conditionally accepting the offer in order to leave yourself open for the UQ round? I'm not sure how it is going to work when GU takes QTAC out of the equation.

some of us have applied to multiple tertiary admission centres (e.g. QTAC VTAC, etc), so if we do receive an offer from QTAC for example, and we accept it, are all the other admission centres automatically notified of your acceptance of offer and hence, cancel any pending offers for which you would be eligible if you hadn't accepted the offer?

no. theyre not connected. You can get an offer from each TAC in Aus if you really wanted.

Just wondering, if I get in has anyone asked about getting into seond year straight up?

I heard from another student studying therapy that griffith doh students get priority to go into second year, cause i've done all the subjects for first year already.

I'm not sure who to ask about this but I think I should email someone like a first year advisor or something?

http://www.griffith.edu.au/admissions/credit-transfer-articulation

Try that link. Make sure you look through the links on the left-hand side also such as 'transfer from another GU course' which seems to apply to you.

Also check that you've completed these subjects which you need to get credit for - http://www17.griffith.edu.au/cis/p_cat/require.asp?ProgCode=1259&Type=structure

I heard that the 'Introduction to dental professions' subject must be done in first yr and you cant just overload while in 2nd yr. Most people I know got credits for everything but because of that subject they had to start with 1st yr and work almost full-time to fill the free time they had.

This is what I have heard and seen but I have never spoken to GU about it so I dont have know much more than that.

I spoke to Griffith Applications services today and they have said that the bulk of the offers will be made on Jan 13, however, some non-standard aplicants may recieve a offer before this date.

Sorry, but I am an international student and am not too sure how things work over there just yet. What do you mean by a non-standard applicant? Is that an international student?

A non-standard applicant is someone who is not a school leaver or gap year taker.

Hey, yeah, I know I've done all the same subjects as the dent course, dent doesn't do internal transfers but apparently a few people have talked to dent staff or lecturers about getting into second year.

I talked to a tutor who was trying to get in too and they said they should be able to get in even though they haven't done the doh class all dent students do (he's in biomed). I'm just wondering who all these people spoke to, dont want to send emails off to the head of school and piss anyone off before the offers are sent out.

Food for thought:

I wouldn't understand why they would allow people strait into second year dent without doing the DOH subjects...
I know they'll put Oral health students into Dent if they want, because Oral health have done all the same stuff first year, and already take up a chair anyway.
But Griffith Dent school being short on chairs and chair time, I don't think it'd be in their interests to fill up already short chair space with students by sticking them into second year.
(I hope you can follow my logic)
From where Im standing - the more people that leave my year or get kept down in second year, the better for me. Because I have more of a share of the limited resources - and Im sure the dent school itself would feel the same. Particularly as they are building the new place in 2 years. Better to put off having more students by putting them in lower years until they have the facilities to handle them.
Not that this has any basis: Im just presenting a possible course of logic the uni would take. Having said that, the 'higher ups' in uni don't seem to follow logic because they are not on the ground. Thus they might be pushing for more dent students than we can handle in as short amount of time as possible (thus keeping second year full of students) so that they have more money for this new building venture among other things...

Hey, just wondering how exactly does this 3 years of BOH in DSc and 2 GDIP in dent work? so after the 5 years your considered a dentist right? is there any extra tests you need to take (within NZ and aus, i know overseas youd have to obviously) and can you go straight into specialisation after the GDIP in dent?

also more importantly is there direct entry into GDIP or is that competitive with limited number of seats?

cheers

It's exactly the same as doing a Bachelor of Dental science. There are no extra tests, and there are no limited places. As long as you pass 3rd year you progress into 4th as if it's any other degree.
The ONLY difference is that you have fullfee instead of CSP from 4th year, and that you have different degrees to put after your name.
There is absolutely no difference between the dentist who goes to older traditional degrees and dentist who goes to Griffith (in theory ;P )

oh thats good to hear haha, just wondering how is first sem like? is the first year a more "general year" with papers spanning across the sciences? are there any clinic papers?

It's defs a 'general' year. First semester is like first semester of any other bio-science based uni course (that I know of) It's basically rehashing all of highschool chem and biology in a semester. And it introduces you to the basics of physiology. Your fourth subject is some 'interpersonal skills' subject (most people hate this one).
Second semester is a little more interesting with such a huge emphasis on physiology and anatomy. Which a biophysics subject and chemistry II subject thrown in there too.
We don't get onto dental specific stuff until next year. I'm sorta hoping we got all of the science out of the way in one block though, so from here on in it'll be much more focused and can assume all our science knowledge.
I heard though, that they are making efforts to expose you to basic dental knowledge in a fifth subject in first year etc: because we complained about the lack of dental related stuff so much. So here's hoping you have a better first year that us :D

Monkey my GPA was either taken as 6.75, 6.93 or 7 from QTAC (depends on if they took my first year GPA, my total GPA or my second year GPA).

I have note heard of any <6.75 yet!!
