Advertising preparation courses on MSO: why this will never stand

Mana

there are no stupid questions, only people
Administrator
In light of a recent permanent ban of MSP, I'd like to explain the rationale behind the existing rules for posting for-profit UMAT, interview and application preparation.

Currently, the only avenue for any advertising is the following:

1. Legitimate candidates looking for other members to study with/get group discounts etc.
- the purpose of this being that the people who are advertising this do not gain any commercial profit from this and do not guarantee or even suggest that these preparation courses will result in a desirable outcome.

2. Long-term MSO contributors looking to provide these services.
- If you have contributed for a long time to MSO - for example, if you have written some in depth guides or articles for MSO whereby the content is hosted on MSO for free and freely available to the public - then, as a thank you from MSO, we are happy to support you in your endeavours. As a general idea of the level of contribution required, your contribution to MSO is deemed sufficient to advertise if you have been approached by MSO administrative staff to be offered a moderator position at MSO (whether or not you accepted this position). If your contribution is not to this level, expect a permanent ban, an IP ban, and to have any reference to your website permanently censored on MSO, if you advertise a service that you have a vested interest in.

The reasons for this are simple:

1. The evidence for commercial UMAT and interview preparation increasing scores/likelihood of admission is tenuous at best
2. Candidates and their parents hope to get into medical school, and preparation courses charge exuberant fees with no guarantee whatsoever that the candidates will get into medical school. MSO has a duty of care to these people to prevent the unnecessary financial strain that these courses place on candidates and their parents or other support systems that prey on their hopes of getting in and turn these into commercial interests.

So far, no preparation course has ever offered a money-back guarantee if you don't get into medical school after attending their course because they know as well as we do that the vast majority of candidates will not gain entry whether or not they did commercial preparation.

If you are part of a commercial preparation or interview company, then if you wanted to advertise elsewhere, such as in the newspapers or on other websites, you'd expect to have to pay a commission for advertising. Don't expect that you could advertise here, especially without paying a commission and without addressing the above reasons.

Thanks to everyone who made MSO what it is today - a not for profit website that aims to provide up to date, unbiased information to those aspiring to study and those studying medicine and other allied health careers in Australia and New Zealand.
