CSU or JCU which?

Which has the better clinical program after the basic medical sciences? i.e. year 3,4,5... and why?

Consider:
- CSU has basic implants in their curriculum... that is a big pro in my opinion.
- Do CSU and JCU have the same number of clinical patient chairs for their students? (CSU= ~24, JCU=?78?). It would seem CSU doesn't have one for each student vs JCU with their large number of seats. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Thanks guys.!

I don't think you should be concerned about the number of dental chairs. For starters, 5th year have a year long placement, 12 weeks x 2 at two locations e.g Dubbo, Bathurst or Wagga Wagga. Then 1st years don't use clinic, only once your halfway through second year so majority of the time it is only 3rd/4th years using the clinics and everyone is rostered equally depending on what year your in :)

It would make sense that one year would be in clinic while the other year has lectures/lab and other things to attend to. Not everyone is in clinic all hours every day :)

Oh ok, thank you. How do you find it so far? How are the professors?

is it true that you see about 2-4 patients/week in 3rd and 4th years? If so, are appointments usually 3 hours... 1.5 hours?

I heard CSU is great when it comes to clinical work, just trying to find out as much as I possibly can.

2nd Year: 1 patient per week.
3rd Year: 2-3 patients per week.
4th Year: 3-4 patients per week.

They are 1.5hr sessions. You can also books specialist appointments which can run for up to 2hrs I recall.

I'm in fourth year now, just finished 3rd and finding it great so far :)

Sounds good! Maybe I see you on campus sometime.

How would you say is the patient flow? You guys have plenty of patients at all times? Oh and also, for the clinical work that you are doing, is it based on credits (you do x number of crowns, cavities, bridges etc...) or is it more competency based (until you get it right)? When you are in the clinical lab, is everyone doing i.e. the same procedures on patients on certain days, or is it that most students have various different cases on all days.?

Excited to see the campus. Any good bars on the free time?

Hutch might not say it, but from the facebook photos that I've seen her put up there is plenty of good times to be had down at little old Orange! Cairns isn't so bad either... really (and I have no idea about curriculum etc) I would opt for whichever place you get into.[/OFFTOPIC]

Its normally competency based but some things require a certain number of X. Patient flow has been quite good, I've never had a problem requesting a new one. And everyone in clinic is normally doing something completely different unless you have booked a specialist appt.

Social wise its pretty good with the dent events we have every year e.g roland bryant cup, bar nights etc

Great. It is good that they book students for you! I was just also wondering, for fixed prosthodonrics if you guys have a lab or if it gets done ourside somewhere- i.e crowns and bridges. Im assuming u guys have a radiology x-ray lab somewhere too?

Also, i see there is a huge dental technology room... What is that used for? Are there computers on these that guide you on procedures?

Yes we have a lab and most things can be done there except things like chrome casting etc is send out like any other uni would. The facilities for that is far too much for a uni to handle. We have lab technicians that guide us through everything. In regards to x-rays everything is done at uni except for OPGS or CT Scans. They are done at the local hospital which is also very common.

Sadly the photos make it seem a lot better than it actually is! Haha.

Oh yeah, for sure, but every dental school teaches (or should teach) dental implantology as apart of their course. This doesn't mean you will be doing dental implants though, that requires a few courses and a couple years of preparation.

Yeah I know :) Just giving the link for clarification on what I think they were referring to. The course was only announced a couple of months ago.
