I think its a good idea to stay on campus, for the 1st year at least. However, I am also curious which college do people recommend.

vincent168 - I got your pm but can't reply until my post count is at 5. I'll send it off to you tomorrow after I make the required posts.

To find out about each course go to this website Griffith University | Bachelor of Oral Health in Dental Science - Gold Coast and click on each course code eg for the subject CTR the code is 1014MSC then go to full course profile and have a read and compare it to what you have already done.

I lived at Metro for a year it was mostly ok. It has a pool but was a bit further out than the others (2.5km). I walked to uni sometimes but often took the bus that metro runs (you pay extra to use this bus).

Hi everyone, I got an offer as well and I am so excited!
Can't wait to meet people in Griffith Dent!

However, I have some problems after receiving my CoE. Can someone give me a hand here?

1. What I heard about accommodation in this forum is that GUV is not a very nice place, too much parties and noises. People recommend UV and Laundromat more often because both only take a 10-15 mins to get to campus. Any suggestion? Anyone looking for roommates?

Congratulations on your offer :)

Regarding GUV - that's pretty much the same sort of stuff I heard. I haven't been inside GUV in about 3 years, so unless the interior has been renovated recently, it's a pretty average place. Otherwise, I hear it's pretty good if you're a really social partying kind of person.

University Village and University Square are pretty decent places, and they're also within a good walking distance to the campus. There's also another place called Nexus, but it's kinda far away.

2. What worries me more is Credit Transfer. I am an international and I have done a Biomedical degree (or Medical Technology). I have finished most of the fundamental subjects.
(Griffith University | Bachelor of Oral Health in Dental Science - Gold Coast).
But I am not sure that will credit transfer affect negatively on my dental studies in the future?
Is there any sources that I can take a look at the content of those fundamental subjects to make sure?
or should I pick the basic of basic like "chemistry and physics" only to do the credit transfer?
any suggestion?!

Don't worry, it won't negatively affect you in the future if you get credit. Seriously, no-one really remembers or cares about the most of the stuff you learn in the foundation year science subjects.

@l2009 Thank you so much!!! (y)

I was planning living "on campus" in the first place, but the social partying thing really kind of scares me. I rather have a quiet place to study at night or something.

Hope that GU will let me transfer some of my credits. It's really hard to tell based on slightly difference course names.

Just curious, what do people do if they are able to get all the credits except "Introduction to Clinical Oral Health Practice" ???

Griffith 2012

After 2 years of constantly trying, I've finally made it! I'm a non standard with GPA-6.7. So excited!(y). I have a few questions though:
1. Is it too late to apply for Griffith University Village?
2. For the last two years, is getting FEE-HELP easy and is it given for the full amount? Can a current student in 4th or 5th year answer this please.

Thanks! Good luck to those still waiting.(yy)

Regarding Accomadation; GUV is party central, always something going on and if you are social you will love it. If you need to study there are plenty of 24hr computer labs that are always available.

UV and Uni square are very quiet and the Accomadation is 3 ppl share units with your own separate bathrooms (always nice). It's a short walk to Uni from both. While they do have a 'social scene' the owners make sure that the place is generally very quiet and study orientated.

From searching around MSO the main choices of accommodation appear to be GUV, UV, Uni Square, Nexus and Metro. Nexus and Metro are further away though.

Is application like uni preferences? I can apply all can choose? Or its like if they accept you, you must go.

I am confused, are you saying that applying to residential colleges is like...wait huh?

You can apply to whereever (no pref), reject and stay whereever.

GUV is the only university owned residential college. Everywhere else is operated privately, so no such thing as application preferences or whatever

Unfortunately I didn't get any 1st round qtac offers (I put jcu med ahead of griffith med). I was wondering if there's a chance I might secure a 2nd round griffith med offer if I change preferences and put griffith ahead of jcu. My ATAR is 99.25, will this be enough (based on previous years) for a 2nd round offer?

Call Griffith admissions and ask them. That's your best bet.

Yeah I was wondering if I can choose out of the lot that I'm accepted in or I had to go to the one that I applied only

Hi Guys,

I am currently in second year Griffith Dent and was a non-standard entry myself. I can answer possibly most of your questions as I have gone through the admission system and currently within the Dental School. I can be your wise friend and share some words of wisdom which may help you in the next few weeks.

Enrolment: With regards to enrolment, Griffith had sent us an email and it was all done online except for Student Card collection (for which you had to take your offer letter + another random document - Griffith sends you this, to any Student Centre). They also post you an Enrolment pack in the mail.

Credit Transfer for non-year 12s: With respect to credit transfer, I got loads of credits transferred from my previous degree as I had studied B Med Sci (Hons) and got all of 1st year credited and some of second year. It is a good thing if you get credit transferred (as much as possible) as you save a lot of HECS! Besides, it gave me the opportunity (obviously with negotiation with subject co-ordinators) to do some second year subjects like Oral Bio and Microbio. Doing this, reduced my current second year load and hence, I am mostly only doing clinics. Added advantage - I had a lot of free time on my plate! Socialised with my current cohort and with the people years above me, and also got an opportunity to get involved into uni activities - there is heaps, you just got to know when and where. One suggestion - apply for credit early! The sooner, the better! I applied early and heard back from them in 2 weeks approximatey, other had to wait for months.

Griffith Dental School Orientation Day: You will also have an orientation day organised by the Dental School where you shall see me as I am part of the Griffith University Dental Students Association (GUDSA) - it has been re-done up with more events for 2012 with new people! There will also be a GUDSA meet 'n' greet happening soon after Orientation day. All the details of Orientation day will be provided by the university in due course after your offer acceptance. If you wish to know more about it, feel free to contact the Dental School. However, they should notify you soon about it. GUDSA activities will be notified by GUDSA committee inclusive of me.

Accommodation: In terms of accommodation, Griffith University Village (GUV) - party house! You cannot study there! I didn't live there but had two of my really good mates live there and it was a nightmare - not recommended for Dental students as you won't be able to concentrate (this is just my opinion). If you are going for university accommodation, 'University Square' is the best option as people who lived there loved it and it was a good study environment. This is followed by 'University Village' or UV - another nice place but I have heard that internet is ridiculously slow. That said, that is the second best option. Personally, I lived privately in a much cheaper place but a decent house - close to uni (just walking distance). Many of my mates do live as well in similar places. I would suggest checkout Gumtree or any other accommodation website, and/or contact Griffith University campus accommodation service as they regularly have cheap accommodation/rentals/homestay/sharehouse ads. Get in sooner as it gets booked out easily. But don't worry if you are late, you will still find decent accommodation but the price might be a tough question to answer.

First Year Classes/subjects: All classes will be at the Gold Coast Campus (Parkwood) in 1[SUP]st[/SUP] year EXCEPT 'Intro to Dental Professions' which is a 'ZERO' credit point subject - it only has lectures which you need to attend (need to attend over 80% - was the rule in 2011), no assessments, just informative about aspects of Dentistry, specialisations, future prospects, etc. - held at the Griffith University - Centre for Medicine and Oral Health in Southport - every second Wednesday at 8.00 am (thats what we had in 2011). You should go to it as you have various Dental organisations that do come in and make you get free student membership such as Australian Dental Association.

Can you have a social life?: Yes! We had a lot of social events in 1[SUP]st[/SUP] semester in 1[SUP]st[/SUP] year. We are just starting second year and I have already planned an event for 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] years. There are also GUDSA events for 2012 including the GUDSA ball at the end of the year. Information for such events is circulated throughout the year. Keep an eye out for publicity!

Tips: Get to know everyone in your cohort as early as possible, make networks and connections and new friendships. For the 5 years you are here, make it worthwhile! Loads of fun and study to be done but memories of this shall remain evergreen. Hence, get to know one another.

If you need any further information or have any questions or queries and/or wish to know more, feel free to message me and I shall check my inbox as and when I can and reply as soon as I can. Don’t be hesitant and welcome to the Dental family!
