It was announced in our lecture today that for 2011, GU Dent will not require UMAT OR an Interview!

Applicants will be selected purely on academic results (OP, GPA, UAI, etc.)

In my own opinion, Expect the cut-off to rise to an OP1/GPA 6.5.

Good luck everyone. Study hard.

nice:lol:, is this the B of oral health in dental science degree or the graduate diploma in dentistry degree?

bachelor of Oral Health in Dental Science is what you gain initial entry into, which then leads on to the Grad Dip in Dent. Simply by completing the BOH in Dental Science, you gain automatic entry into the grad dip.

Holy crap!!! (excuse my language). Thats huge news!(yy)

So does this mean that it only applies for students wishing to begin in 2012? Or do people that are applying for griffith this year to start in 2011 also get no umat and interview?

Geez im nervous now...it sounds like competition is going to be even MORE intenser

Also, on a second thought.....although im all for getting rid of umat!

I wonder if getting rid of interviews is such a wise move?

I mean you can't possibly determine a persons people skills (which, correct me if im wrong, is a very important part of dentistry) purely from academic results?

Hmmm i wonder why they decided to change it..

I would hazard a guess that it would be one or both of, (a) it takes a lot of time and money to hold interviews for such a large group, and (b) that an interview can be easily faked (or stuffed up =\ )and doesn't necessarily represent how good a dentists you will be.

Hmm... I'm a bit ambivalent about this, I despise the UMAT and have found it to be the bane of my existence so good riddance to that, although I am convinced that the interviewing process is rather important.. Although I do agree with Shizzy about how unpredictable an interview can be. Irrespectively, it has instilled me with a bit of motivation to study (that of which was previously lacking)!! Is there any news on what's on the cards for Med @ Griffith??? Are they still going to take UMAT into consideration?

As far as we know they are still using UMAT and interview for undergrad and GAMSAT and interview for grad.

I wouldn't be surprised if they ditched the interview for medicine entry now as well considering this latest drop of dentistry interviews. They wouldn't be the first uni to drop interviews for med (UQ). It would give some more data for their research too (researching medical entry and subsequent performance and eventual specialisation).

I thought the reason they interviewed candidates and put them through psycometric testing in the first place back in the 30s or so was because academic results wern't a good enough indicator.

But I figure that patients dont even discuss confidential/personal information with their dentists, so honestly i'm not sure why people skills is important for selecting candidates (no disrespect meant)

I didn't see anything on Griffith's website, but since they apparently just announced it I supposed I probably wouldn't find anything.

I reckon having only one assessment to discriminate candidates is a bad move, because there are probably going to be quite many nonstandard entry applicants with GPA7s, and it'll be hard to pull them apart.

But yes, this has been asked before but is this for 2011 entry (2010 applicants) or 2012 entry (2011 applicants)?

FIRST!!!
Well I guess that means that it's now official - most undergrad dental schools in Aus don't require UMAT! (y) Good news for many, not so good news for some...

How can you determine people skills through only one interview? I could understand if you had to do a set of interviews with several different panels but how easy is it to determine the character of a person in one easily faked 30 minute session?

that would explain why around 30% of new doctors in NSW quite medicine after or during their internships; this also clearly depicts that UMAT(n) is useless! It is just a method to decrease the number of students applying either for medicine, optometry or dentistry

Really? Source?

Have you ever been to a dentist that has bad people skills....It's not a great experience AT ALL. Noone will come to you if they feel uncomfortable. And also, mouths are a pretty personal space. I personally don't even trust my dentist when they're fiddling around in my mouth. It's a very vulnerable position to be in in the dentist chair.

Just to clarify.

Applicants for 2011 (ie. Start your 1st year of uni in 2011) DO NOT need to sit the UMAT for GU Dent.

Current year 12 students in 2010 will NOT need to sit UMAT in2010
Current Tertiary students in 2010 will NOT need to sit UMAT in 2010
Anyone else............................. will NOT need to sit UMAT in 2010

All groups will be ranked according to academic merit.

If you are wanting to apply for GU dent and nowhere else, DO NOT SIT UMAT....And DO NOT wate your money on pr3p Materials. You just need a Good OP/GPA/RANK/whatever else you use

I was in the hospital office last week (getting a new name badge. I put at least one through the wash every week) and the staff were all talking about it so it's def true

Since queensland-based universities such as griffith don't distinguish between candidates with the same OP..I wonder how this is going to work in regards to school-leaver cutoffs. There's a similar issue related to non-standard entry too, because as pointed out above, many candidates may have the same/similar gpas. At least with ATARs, there's more of a numerical variation (ie arguably ATARs make it eaiser to distinguish between candidates for this reason). It's interesting news nonetheless

Yesterday I rang up someone from the dentistry department at griffith to ask them if there was going to be no umat or interview next year. She started to insult me saying what I asked her was inappropriate and unethical and that she does not want unethical people in her dental science course. I was shocked at this and then she hung up, failing to answer my question...............
