Internship: NSW Category 2 Applicants

Your medical school does not have any influence or effect on what kind of specialty you eventually pursue. I suggest you read a bit about medicine as a career, as this kind of thing you really should know already. Look beyond the university stage.

I understand, but I wasn't referring to whether my med school limit the type of speciality. I was referring to if my status as category 3 would limit specialty I eventually pursue in NSW.

Is there any site where I can find statistics about success of interstate applicant to NSW internship?

Closest stats we have for this is around 980 internships a year (from HETI) vs 880 domestic NSW graduates (from Med Deans data). Assuming most NSW grads take up their allocations it leaves around 100 spots for categories 2/3/4. I believe cat 3s will find it very hard to get a spot in a desirable location.

Again: read up about medicine as a career. Internship allocations have absolutely nothing to do with specialisation pathways.

huh, so as a cat 3 what's the most probable time I can move to NSW? After residency?

PGY2+, which may or may not mark the end of "residency", depending on your career pathway and trajectory.

Thanks chinaski! But just to clarify, if we are using terms like Junior Medical Officer and Senior Medical Officer, I would most likely spend my time as a JMO at where I did my med school. And only be able to move to NSW as a SMO?

A "senior medical officer" is a consultant-level doctor. People move around all the time for training purposes - the soonest you could easily move, as I said before, is from PGY3 onwards. PGY2 jobs are largely accounted for in NSW, so you would have limited options there.

you can even move for internship, just depends on your luck! I knoww a cat 3 (high school in SA, med in VIC) who just got offered an intern job in Bankstown

As per the beginning of this thread, outsiders being offered PGY1 positions is possible but certainly not guaranteed. The context of the current discussion is about the point at which it becomes easiest to secure employment as an outside applicant - which is not straight after graduation.

As a cat 2 applicant, has anybody heard of anyone getting big 4 (specifically POW, st vincents).
And if I really wanted to come back as early as possible, would it not be wise to put the big 4 first? And instead put something like concord/st george down
I'm purely picking NSW hospitals based on distance from home.
Thanks!

It seems like @mana’s advice is pretty clear for Cat 2s. Just preference in the actual order you’d prefer...

but if i prefer the big 4, does that limit my chance of coming back? Sorry...just wanted to be absolutely sure.
Do you mean, if you STACK the big 4? Hasn't the question about stacking as a Cat 2 already been addressed? Not really sure why you think your personal preferences would influence things...?

sorry I don't really mean stacking. What I'm trying to find out is should I really just order my preferences (which is actually pretty much the stack order anyway) or should I put less popular hospitals (but still near the city like Concord/St george) to maximise my chance to returning to Sydney.

Basically my preference is:
Top 4 NSW > St George/concord > Remain in Victoria > Rest of the NSW hospital network

See page 1 of this 2019 Intake report > https://www.heti.nsw.gov.au/__data/...te-Recruitment-for-the-2019-Clinical-Year.PDF

Cat1 : 831 graduates
Cat2 : 95
Cat3 : 28
Cat4 : 69

If this trend continues with almost 100 spots still available after Cat2 you shouldn't have problems getting one to return to Sydney. Otoh I believe you are considered only after the 831 NSW graduates have had their picks so chances for a choice location are minimal, regardless of stacking or not.

Agree with sovietcop;
Blacktown and Nepean seem to be the only places you were guaranteed a job as a cat 2 as even cat 3 and 4's have gotten offers there.
I put Liverpool first, Westmead second and ended up getting an optimised spot at Concord (that I know 2 other people got and rejected).
Unless you're absolutely desperate to get to NSW, I suggest trying and hedging your bets with optimised/DRA as long as you are genuinely happy with your top few preferences.
Also be prepared to wait... it's mainly only blacktown and nepean spots that get released initially

Thanks for sharing your experience! Sounds like you got a great outcome. I'm about to apply for an internship as Cat 2 in NSW.

If you put Liverpool 1st, then Westmead 2nd, how did you end up getting a spot at Concord? Was it through the direct website that facilitates swaps for HETI?
