Opportunities offered by Medical Science

hey I would like to know if all medical science courses are the same? if not which ones in victoria would be better to help me in terms of the gamsat?

Unfortunately I don't know much about Med Sci courses in Victoria... but those in NSW do vary in terms of subjects covered - particularly in first year with the level of maths and physics.

It depends what your year 12 background is and what you feel comfortable with in preparing for GAMSAT. If you've done physics in year 12, then that satisfies the physics component of GAMSAT. If not, you may want to look into a Med Sci course that offers physics or alternatively you can learn it yourself when it comes to GAMSAT study.

As for Chem and Bio, all Med Sci courses should cover these no matter which Uni you choose.

hey all.
im considering med science at both Usyd and UTS.

basically whats the difference between the two and what is the better course, like i mean would UTS be easier to gain a higher GPA?

does UTS offer greater practical exposure, if at all?

oh and at UTS they offer both biomedicine (81 ish) and medical sicenc (84). lol funny thing is i thought they were the same course???

any help would be great

As I mentioned in another thread, I'm not entirely sure regarding all the differences between USyd and UTS. There is more of a maths focus at USyd in first year. I believe that UTS offers Haematology which USyd doesn't, whereas USyd offers specialised Med Sci subjects in second year that allow learning from a wide variety of disciplines. I would suggest investigating the course guides from both unis to see what the subject requirements are and from that, determine which suits you.

As to which uni is easier to gain a higher GPA in, it would depend on the competitiveness of the cohort, which may be difficult to determine from the UAI cut-off seeing students from a number of degrees may be pooled into a given subject.

I'm not sure what you are asking re: practical exposure... all I can say is that lab hours would vary depending on which subjects you choose. There isn't any clinical experience offered in medical science.

I imagine that biomedicine and medical science would be similar but may have subtle differences in their course requirements. I would say that both would be valuable undergrad degrees if one is looking to graduate med entry.

just to mix things up a bit on this thread, atm i am thinking of medical and health sciences at uow as my undergraduate degree next year (assuming i miss out on med this year :( ), would it be fair to say that because this degree is likely to be less competitive than med sci at usyd or unsw that it would be easier to get a higher gpa for post grad med? also i didnt do physics in yr 12 at all, how would i go about reparing for gamsat having no physics knowledge?

it is a new degree at uow starting next year, i'm not sure what the atar cutoff will be. i think it will be a lot cheaper to live in wollongong than sydney whist still being close to the city and it has a nice campus, the course seems much alike those at usyd and unsw....
