Possibility of Interstate Internship/Residency

I saw a few old posts on this but those were from 5 years ago and I wasn't sure if the info was still valid so I decided to post this (sorry if I missed a post or something). So I'm studying med sci/med in Qld at Griffith at the moment (ending in 2028) and I'm just wondering what the chances would be of me receiving an internship in NSW (if it helps, I'll probably be an unbonded student and I completed high school in NSW).

From reading other posts I understand I'm category 2 or something like because I completed high school in NSW but is there a way to get a rough estimate of how likely an internship actually is?

Also, are the chances of me getting an internship in an urban area decreased if I was to study med at university of new england (armindale) as apposed to studying med at UNSW (since armindale is like rural nsw).

No, the NSW internship allocation algorithm works on how you indicate your preferences in your internship application, so unrelated to where in NSW you study.

All depends on how you place preferences.

The allocation goes in sequence Rural locations > Regional > Urban, with Category priorities applied *within* each group.

Category 2 nominating Rural or Regional will almost be certain to get a spot, we've seen Category 4 got one.
But if you nominate popular Urban locations that the Category 1s all go for, chances are you miss out altogether.

Hi,
Are there any Australian Hospitals that allow you to do internship there with a international medical degree, and being a Australian citizen?

It's possible but the path is quite difficult.
You first need to pass the AMC exam(s) (to be eligible for AHPRA provisional registration to work as intern) unless you did the med degree in UK, Ireland, US, Canada. Then apply around mid-year to the states' intern recruitments for the next January intakes. I remember seeing one year less than 10 AMC-graduates were selected among the 3500ish positions available, due to them being lowest priority category.

If not selected in these January main rounds you need to contact the hospitals individually or check the Medical Jobs Board for any vacancies during the year.
