Entry Requirements

  • >95 ATAR (or equivalent) (If more than 3/4 year of tertiary study has been undertaken, this will be considered along with the ATAR)
  • UMAT score
  • Interview

These three components are weighed equally during consideration of offers.

The UNSW Medicine Undergraduate Entry site states that:
Applicants need to be aware that because selection is on the basis of a combination of all three criteria (i.e. academic merit, UMAT and interview), they will increase their likelihood of being selected by achieving the highest possible result in each of the three criteria. (This is illustrated by the fact that although the minimum ATAR for eligibility is 96.00, the median ATAR required for entry is always greater than 99.60. Similarly for both UMAT and the interview, the median scores required for entry are close to the top of the respective ranges.)

Application Process

  • Submit Registration of Interest form via the UNSW Faculty of Medicine website before the deadline.
  • Submit a Medicine Application form via the UNSW Faculty of Medicine website before the deadline.
  • UNSW will contact your school directly for predicted ATAR
  • Register for 428000 B Medicine / B Surgery on UAC by the closing date.
  • First round offers are released mid-January via UAC
  • Second round offers are released in February via UAC.

UMAT

  • UMAT scores are valid for two years (so applicants lodging a 2011 application require a 2010 or 2011 UMAT score)
  • Applicants can sit the test from their last year of secondary study (i.e. Year 12)
  • All sections are weighed equally and raw score is used rather than percentile

Interview Offers

  • Applicants will be shortlisted for interview based on a sliding scale between predicted or attained ATAR and UMAT score (higher ATAR, lower UMAT required)
  • Offers are provided via email in early November
  • More details of this can be found on the UNSW Medicine website.
  • Interstate applicants will be notified that they are eligible for an interview but given the opportunity to sit their interviews in January in order for convenience, at no disadvantage.

Interviews

  • Interviews are held in late November / early December
  • The interview consists of a panel of 2 interviewers and is considered as a semi-structured interview.

Final Ranking

  • Final ranking for non-rural applicants is based equally on UMAT, ATAR and interview.
  • Final ranking for rural applicants is based on UMAT, ATAR, interview and rural rating.

Rural Applicants

Rural Applicants apply to Medicine through the Rural Student Entry Scheme. Applicants are considered rural if they have lived in a defined rural location in Australia for a minimum of five years from the age of five.

By stating, <span style="font-style:italic;">"Applicants are considered Indigenous if they are an <span style="font-weight:bold;">Australian</span> or Torres Strait Islander," </span>do you mean that they are an Australian citizen with Torres Strait Islander identity, or do you mean that they are Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander?

Looks like a typo, doesn't it? I suspect it's gone to print with "Australian" rather than "Aboriginal" in place.
