Admission Requirements
Admission to the DMD is based on 3 criteria:

  • A minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) of 5.5 (on a 7.0 scale) in any Bachelor Degree
  • GAMSAT (Graduate Australian Medical School Admissions Test)
  • Multiple Mini-Interview (MMI)

    Applicants must have a Bachelor degree from a recognised institution:

    Applicants must have completed their Bachelor degree within 10 years of applying to the program. If the degree was completed over 10 years ago, applicants must either:

    • Obtain a 2nd bachelor degree at a recognised institution
    • Obtain a Graduate Diploma, Masters or PhD degree at a recognised institution


    • Human biological science degree or as a minimum, one semester of a Human Biology subject equivalent to the USyd unit of study “Human Biology” (BIOL1003).
    • Prerequisite may be achieved as part of undergraduate degree or through a winter or summer school program
    • Completion of any degree in the health sciences, e.g. physiotherapy or nursing will satisfy this criterion

    Admissions test
    Domestic applicants

    • Must achieve a minimum score of 50 in each section of the GAMSAT to be considered
    • 2012 GAMSAT cutoff: 60
    • NB: Rural, ATSI and refugee applicants are considered on a case-by-case basis

    International applicants
    International applicants must take one of the following admissions tests:

    • North American Medical Colleges Admissions Test (MCAT). US Applicants must use MCAT
    • Dental Admissions Test (DAT)
    • Canadian Dental Aptitude Test

    NB: a minimum score of 50 is required in each section of the GAMSAT to be considered. MCAT scores must have a minimum grade of M in the writing sample and 8 in the sections that are given numerical scores. Applicants using the DAT or CDAT must achieve a minimum score of 15 in each of the sections.

    • Interviews are held in conjunction with those for the MBBS degree at USyd
    • Applicants who meet the minimum GPA and GAMSAT requirements are considered for interview
    • Interviews are offered on basis of Overall GAMSAT score
    • Interview dates: 13th – 15[SUP]th[/SUP] August, 20th – 22[SUP]nd[/SUP] August
    • Interviews must be attended in person. In exceptional circumstances Skype interviews may be considered

    Format of interview

    • MMI will last approx 45 minutes
    • 5 different stations, 7 minutes per station to discuss a scenario or question with a single interviewer
    • 2 minutes at the end of each station for applicants to prepare for the next station

    Application process
    Domestic applicants

  • Complete or be in final year of undergraduate degree and obtain GPA
  • Register and sit for GAMSAT
  • Complete online application form by June the year prior to entry
  • Upload transcripts and any other required documents electronically at time of application by June 4 2012
  • Supporting documentation for special-entry schemes (rural, indigenous, refugee or PhD/Masters by research) must also be uploaded at time of application

    NB: applications for DMD must nominate DMD as first preference
