how important are the references in UNSW interview?

i recall when i filled in the medical application form for UNSW, there was a section where you had to nominate a personal referee.... i was just wondering what role the referee play in the interview?

does UNSW phone the referees before they interview us? do they mention your referee in the interview? and if we received a very bad reference,,,how will it affect our interview?

What they did last year is they made them verify and comment on the stuff you said in your interview app. It's not going to affect you getting in per se, but they may indirectly make your interview easier or harder for you.

But you shouldn't try and control this, you'd probably just make it worse for yourself.
