JCU JCU Medicine: General Entry Discussion

As a non-standard NSW metro student, how many days/week is it recommended to get as volunteering at a rural hospital? And does it need to be 3 different places or is 1 enough? (Knowing that I need 3 letters of support).

Applying as a non-standard applicant from NSW, anyone heard of people getting in as non-standard with no rural background?

Yes, definitely. Rural background certainly helps but it’s not a deal-breaker and your chance isn’t 0% without it. Given the non-standard intake is pretty small at JCU anyway, we certainly recommend applying widely though and not having all your eggs in one basket.

Thanks! Do you know what's the yearly intake for non-standards roughly? And how do they weigh interview invitations? I just find it a bit tricky now that they took away the written response and just choose applicants purely on academic scores and rural background

Nah, it seems the numbers can vary from year to year (we’ve seen numbers suggesting as low as 20 and as high as 50 from different years). And the lack of written application definitely mixes things up a bit. JCU aren’t always particularly transparent unfortunately.

Cool thank you so much! I guess the GPA of 5.75 is not a cut-off right? As mine is 5.7 only.. Nevertheless I've heard people with great GPA like 6+ not receiving interview offer. Does having allied health work background help? Again, non-rural background unfortunately

I feel like the wording is misleading because I'm not really sure how 'competitive' 5.75 GPA is (for med I mean). I would imagine that many non-standards that apply to JCU would have GPAs in the 6.5+ ball park. I applied with a 6.6 this year and two letters of recommendation and didn't receive an interview. I think the chances for non-rural non-standard applicants are very slim if you don't have a near perfect GPA and stellar letters of recommendation. Never hurts to apply tho. Sounds like my chances are slim! But yeah going to apply anyway. What are your plans now then?
