JCU JCU Medicine: Non-Standard Entry

Sorry one last question does it matter that I’m currently in my final year only doing 2 subjects this sem since I underloaded throughout my degree. Will they consider my gpa overall, including this year which I will graduate at the end of sem 2 and first and second year?
Nope, that’s not a problem as you’ll have more than 1FTE years of study completed :) Yes, they’ll consider your GPA from the entire degree.

Hi guys,

Quick question as a NSL, with my GPA of 3.3, rurality status of RA2 and given that I deliver a suitable written application with accompanied reference letters for JCU markers, how do you all rate my chances of gaining an interview at JCU?

Cheers,

Welcome to MSO! :)

I assume your GPA is on a 4-point scale. You'll need to convert it to a 7-point scale to give us a better idea. Though, with JCU, rurality + written application + interview are the far more important factors than academic performance, so long as your GPA is within the ballpark. Obviously even with your GPA on a 7-point scale, it will still be very difficult for us to give you an idea of your chances at gaining an interview because this will largely come down to the quality of your written application.

My advice would be to start on your written application ASAP so you have plenty of time to perfect it! Best of luck :)

Hi Crow,

Thank you for your prompt reply!

Of course! I know I do beg the question similar to how long is a piece of string because I understand how crucial the written application hurdle is and where interview offers at JCU are indeed won or loss.

Thank you for your advice and I look to complete my written application first draft in as many days so hopefully I can bounce it around for some much needed edits before submission.

Thanks again, Crow!

Cheers,

does jcu require you to complete 8 subjects/48 units in your first year of uni for your gpa to be considered? I'm currently at UNSW and due to immense popularity in my subs, I can only manage 7.

Yep, I believe the conversion is very unfavourable if you’ve got less than 1FTE year of study completed, unfortunately.

Hi Crow,

My GPA on a 7 point scale will convert to a 6.2, which - according to previous threads - is right on part with the minimum required GPA. Additional information in my case in particular is that I have recently graduated from a Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Honours) last year. I am unsure how this ranks in the eyes of the markers with reference to GPA and interview selections. I look forward to hearing from you guys soon and on a side note, best wishes for everybody and their JCU written applications! 😌

Yep, so a 6.2 is just scraping into the competitive territory, provided you have a very solid written application +/- interview! Your degree won’t have any influence on your competitiveness or GPA calculation, but if you’re lucky enough to gain a place offer, you may be eligible to apply for advanced standing in which case you could potentially start the program in 2nd year rather than 1st year (but JCU are pretty strict on this and the information on the requirements is rather vague).

Hi guys, I was wondering how many credit points are needed to apply for JCU med, and is 1 semester enough? Sorry if this has been asked before couldn't find the answer anywhere! Thanks

I finally found it, clause 13.2.1 in this document
> Admissions Procedure

"13.2.1 Have completed at least six months full-time equivalent tertiary study will be considered for admission based on their most recent course Grade Point Average (GPA) in addition to any Special Criteria" (these being the written application & interview).

My view is when schools say 1 year full-time equivalent they mean 8 standard units despite them taking only 8 months long.
Oops, sorry, that's true.

Reason I was thinking along those lines is because I'm sure those with only 0.5FTE study aren't competitive for JCU med, despite being "eligible" to apply - but I think there's a reason we've never heard of anyone getting a place offer as a non-standard for JCU medicine with less than 1FTE.

We know QTAC applies conversion to a rank when a non-standard applies for any course, and the conversion system is on this page: Higher education study (I know this is for QUT but I've seen the same for UQ and I can only assume it's standard at other QLD unis). Even with a perfect GPA, if you only have 0.5 FTE then you can have a maximum selection rank of 88.95 which we know isn't competitive (I know that non-standards are in a separate pool to standard applicants, but I do believe that applicants are screened by selection rank).

The GPA to ATAR table on page 6 of this document also makes a lot of sense to me in line with Griffith dent score requirements - I'm about to post about that in the right thread. https://cms.qut.edu.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0012/252021/admission-pathways.pdf

Thoughts?

Hey guys!

Few questions here regarding how GPA gets assessed, am I correct in saying that the overall GPA is what gets looked at but then is further converted to an atar/rank by QTAC?

I'm so used to the GEMSAS system which actually scales your GPA depending on what university you come from (in my case my GPA increases after scaling) and takes into account of masters topics vs bachelors topics. Is this the same through QTAC?

Also, I'm currently on a 6.66 (not GEMSAS scaled) but considering semester 2 GPA will be considered this could drop to around 6.5ish (have got a 13.5 unit masters topic rip), would this still be somewhat competitive? Considering deferring to maintain the 6.66 when applying.

Thanks so much guys ❤

For JCU Med non-standard applicants compete in a separate pool so on surface can be compared directly on GPA, but QTAC does convert to a Selection rank because less than 1FTE GPA is less "valuable" than 1+FTE GPA. See the extracts below.

UAC & QTAC do GPA different to Gemsas, they base on the letter grade codes (HD D etc regardless whether it's 85 or 80 HD), whereas Gemsas base on the marks. If you have done more than one degree JCU use the GPA of the most recent study course provided it's 0.5+FTE.

Hi guys, I have a GPA of 6.0 right now and in my second year of bachelor of medical sciences at UWA, and I just want to know what are my chances for an interview from JCU by the end of next year if my GPA is 6.5 and with a good application. I really need some help, so could someone pls let me know about this,
Thanks :)

We can’t give JCU applicants an answer to ‘what are my chances’ questions because the written application is so vital. A GPA of 7.00/99.95 is not enough in many instances as it can’t compensate for a written application that isn’t adequate. 6.5 is competitive IF the written application is adequate.

Thank you for your reply,
If I want to do a masters after I finish my undergrad next year at UWA, which offer an additional 0.2 to my GPA ,will JCU consider my GPA to be 6.7 or will they only look at it being the 6.5?

The +0.2 to GPA is only by certain unis. I have seen a JCU document saying they use the GPA of your most recent study course, in your case would be the Master, if it's one semester or more. You can see the likely conversion for Masters in the tables in this post, although Masters by coursework appear to convert the same as 1+FTE undergrad. (I say likely since these are extracted from a QUT website, but they match well with conversions we've seen at other Qld unis).

Thanks A1,

I have completed a Bachelor of Applied science with a unweighted gpa of 6.93 (GEMSAS) and first class honours. Would I be interpreting correctly, that my score (as above), would be a comparative ATAR of 99.95 (because of the first class honours)?

Cheers

Yes I think so but keep in mind these tables are from a QUT website. However we've seen Griffith give 99.95 to Honours 1 as well so it's likely to apply to Qld unis in general.
