JMP JMP: MD-JMP Outline

Hi Eliden,

I have reviewed the information about clinical placements and it's my understanding that by "Away" from their university just means placements at hospitals. By "Two Semesters", it would mean one year of clinical placements in hospitals in the NSW health network.

For Example:
Newcastle: John Hunter, Calvary Mater, Belmont
Maitland / Lower Hunter: Maitland Hospital, Kurri Kurri, Cessnock, Scone, Dungog, Singleton, Muswellbrook
Central Coast: Gosford,Wyong

Its possible given your location you can find a clinical school within communting distance of your Home. It mentions on the official page this is a ballot between all students and you are given three preferences of districts. I imagine there is an avenue of "swapping" amongst students.

Again my understanding of the JMP is 3 years on campus, with placements etc, graduate with your B M.S. then two years PGY1 and PGY2 to get your M.D. with the final two years being heavily in placements.

Please find my source here and all the best:

Thanks AstralResolve. Yes I ended up emailing them directly and their response was just as you stated. They did also state that they would take into account my circumstances as a parent before assigning me to a distant hospital. Good news!

Thats fantastic, i wish you all the success in the future!

Are there any UNE students on here that might be able to answer a few questions? I'm just wondering if their course is based on the same format that Port Macquarie has whereby their lectures are streamed and recorded in Kensington?

iStudent may be happy to chime in :D

It’s a cohort of 60 and you’re based at a university - I would imagine it’s formal classes just as it would be at Newcastle. I’d be interested to know if students from different campuses have access to each other’s lectures and materials though - as a Griffith GC student, I have access to all of the Sunshine Coast students’ lecture recordings and vice versa for them. I’d be surprised if JMP didn’t do the same.

I think I read from somewhere in the forums that they do. Apparently UNE people also have student cards from both UoN and UNE but not sure if UoN people have the same vice versa.

As someone who attends UoN (not as a med student obviously) for courses run concurrently at both universities (central coast campus and Newcastle) I can access both sets of tutorials and lecture notes. I would assume it would be the same.

Yup confirmed as above.

Which actually makes it harder because there's twice the amount of lecture slides to go through :p
too true 😂 but I’ve found that I’ve gotten into the habit of knowing which lecturers I prefer for different topics from each uni!

Hi, just want to know an overall idea about MSA, I’m super nervous about the interview but I really want to get into UoN JMP. Thank you🙏.

Interviewees are required to sign a non-disclosure agreement, so there are no juicy tips that anyone can divulge to you outside of the information provided to you by the universities themselves.

Have interview offers for JMP come out yet???

A note to all users: There will be an influx of reporting when interview invites are released. Posting comments like this will only clutter threads unnecessarily, so please refrain from this in the future.

Hey is there anyone here that goes to Newcastle who would be willing to talk about the specific course? I think it would be a great match for me but I would also love to hear some first hand experiences. Thanks!

Do you have any specific questions? The first 2 years are pre-clinical, so you do lots of theory content with practical clinical skills and OSCEs scattered throughout. The content is based on working problems, so you work with a small group in PBL tutorials 3 times/week to essentially diagnose/investigate/manage a clinical problem. You’ll also have lectures each week which tie back to the working problem, so by the end of the week you should feel confident in that particular clinical problem. The great thing about PBLs is that everyone adds a different perspective. Everyone is also very supportive so it’s a great platform to bring up any confusion you might have on the content.

The last 3 years are basically placements and case-based learnings. I’m a first-year so I can’t comment on the specifics of clinical years. But happy to answer any questions regarding 1st/2nd year JMP :)

Hi YanYan

Could you be so kind to share with us what the timetable is like as a first year? For example how many days a week can you expect to be on campus, how many hours and what is done on those days?
Thanks in Advance.

Hey there,

Sure, we've actually spent most of this year online due to COVID restrictions. But we still have 1 in-person class/OSCE every 3 weeks (which requires us to be on campus). Aside from that, all the other classes are online. This usually consists of PBL on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, covering the Open, Middle and Close sessions, respectively. Anatomy/histology are on Mondays, all the sciences (e.g. pharmacology, physiology, anatomy, biochemistry, etc.) are on Tuesdays, Ethics is on Wednesdays, Clinical skills is on Thursdays and Fridays sometimes have patient-centred forums (where a patient and clinician come in and talk for a couple of hours about their experiences). The same format was followed back when we were in-person earlier this year. Hope this helps!

Immensely. Thank you. I hope Covid hasn't affected your studies too negatively.

Uhhh enrolling/timetabling... ??? Help, do we select whatever times we want for those Thursday classes? Looks like PBL groups earlier in alphabetical order are earlier in the day most of the time. Is this right?
