Yeah, you're right all we can do now is wait for results. Semester 1 results didn't take that long right? If med offers are estimated to come by at around Christmas time, we should get our results alot sooner and maybe have at least somewhat of a prediction of whether we got in or not

Well I put "4.6 is the best estimate", because it is true, and because the other option didn't state 95% confidence - it could have been referring to a 90% CI for all we know.

FFS. i assumed its a 95% interval just b/c all the examples we did were 95% intervals. i didnt think 4.6 is the best estimate because it could quite easily be anything around that value but meh..back to video games!

It is the best estimate :D Values to the left and right have a lower probability of being the true value, like a normal distribution centered on the best estimate.

Exactly. Nice to know L3 stats was of some use in epi after all, though of course if this were stats you'd have to make a big point of the normal distribution being centred on the true value and not the estimate, but meh.

Besides, we did briefly cover CIs of different confidence levels.

Hope your holidays are going well everyone :)

meh..back to video games!

Right on man, yeah! I've been waiting for this throughout the year.. My brain's gonna so rot over the holidays. Gonna wait until dragon age gets cheap tho (yy)

What's everyone gonna do? Personally one of my goals is to burn of all the access fat (oh no you stop thinking of pyruvate and acetyl CoA!) i gained throughout my stay in cumberland...

(well health sci is over so i cant really be blamed for getting off topic a bit right?)

And just remembered, there were two questions which included 95% interval in it, one which asked you to interpret the interval and the one you're talking about. So yeah I put 4.6 is the best estimate!

Good on you for choosing to have a lazy 4 months. Amazingly I don't think I've put on any weight this year (and I've been eating some huge meals at my hall), so thankfully I don't have to worry about burning off any fat.

On the other hand, I have only half escaped from health sci. I am spending these holidays doing a summer studentship with the Christchurch School of Medicine. Basically, that means I am contributing towards a research project into the control of LH secretion. Still not completely sure what my exact role is, but thankfully it's mainly maths, with only a little biology, so it sort of is an escape (and a very good opportunity to bring my maths back up to scratch).

Hey everyone, good to see you're all still posting during your holidays. Hope everyone's having a blast!! I know I am :D Parties, movies, facebook whoring (lol). Not to mention the countless hours of (much needed) sleep!! If anyone is coming up for Big Day Out or anything like that, pm me ur mob number and we can meet up :) .

Btw, respect to everyone for overcoming the mountain that is health sci. It's been a fun experience exchanging thoughts with everyone through this forum. Regardless of whether or not you guys get into Med (and I sincerely hope everyone gets it) I'd like to thank everyone for an awesome journey through HSFY.

Make the most of your long holidays!! Go out, get drunk, have fun, meet girls/guys, sleep and wake up late, play video games, errrhmmm watch porn...Ok cross that last one out... :D

Have a good one guys n gals!

That is so cool you're doing an LH thing for the hospital greenglacier! I'm so jealous (in a friendly way of course). Post up what you learnt, I would be interested in reading what you guys find. And only my brain is having it lazy these holidays, I just did heaps of physical exercise before and I feel great!

koochkooch, you're posting as though you're not posting here for 4 months lol

The holidays are amazing, best holidays ever!!! Can't find a job, but kinda don't mind lol. I'm loving having time to exercise, I gained like 5kg and lost muscle from sitting round all the time(studying!). Been riding trails on my motorbike and mountain bike, its mint! Im totally going to forget everything I've learnt all year.

Everyone needs to keep posting next year though, keep up with what everyones doing etc. Goodluck for results everyone, hope you all get into med or whatever you want to do!(yy)(yy)(yy)

Holidays for me havnt been as relaxing... just finished 3 weeks worth of 6 hours a day of painting... Now im off to the local orchard to pick apples in the sun all day! Getting good money though. Im so pasty after a year of Dunedin and also not seing the sun much anyway due to study that i get burnt in like 5 seconds!
Pretty jelous of your job greenglacier! I tried to get a job in one of my dads stage 2/3 prostate cancer drug trials but it turns out a semester a epi doesnt cut it as qualification haha

Hey, economics results just came out, for anyone who took it as an eighth paper (and I hear that Maori results have been out for a while). The rest of the results shouldn't be too far away now...

How'd everyone go? I got 98%, which I'm happy with, considering that I knew I had lost 2% in the MCQs (so I must have gotten 25/25 in the short answer section of the final exam). ^_^

Hey guys

BIOC and HEAL results are out!!
BIOC - 86%
HEAL - 78%

I got 88% for MAOR102

Good luck everyone!!

P.S. nice results there greenglacier =]

Hey guys. Has been good hearing about your struggles with the dreaded UMAT after having slogged for good grades. I've been there too and I know what its like.

Does anyone know if you need to get over 25th percentile in each section of UMAT to get accepted to med from HSFY?

I have a 94% average overall. Virtually all my results are out now. But my UMAT raw marks are 60 50 46 which is an overall Otago weighted score of 54.

Only problem is that the 3rd section mark is just under 25th percentile on the graph. If it was just above I'd be feeling like I had a pryty good shot.

Am I disqualified on the grounds of my section 3 score??

As far as I'm aware, you don't need above 25th percentile and given the fact that your s3 was lowest puts you in a good place for Otago Med due to the 45/45/10 weighting. 94 average is stunning.

From my understanding, you are in a very good position for Med from HSFY

By the way guys...

For the BSNS104 students...I was hoping you could do me a favour.

I'm planning to take this paper sometime either next year or the year after for my Biomed degree. Could I get some resources off of your hands if possible? I need things like lecture slides, answers to past papers, advice on how to get A+ in the paper. This is directed mostly towards greenglacier :P

Thanks for any help

I have all the resources saved on my computer.

I'm about to send you a private message regarding this.

Yea I noticed that too. From what I've heard they stuffed up a whole exam room of people. (they all got shockingly bad marks). So they're sorting it out.

That would ruin ur holiday for a cuple days i'd imagine.

Honestly, I'm not even surprised. The epi staff have been anything but organised this year, and this just adds to their list of failures. The term's tests being unfair, the lecture audios taking yonks to be uploaded, the poor form of assessment in tutorials plus more...and now this. They really need to sort out their s*** for next year

Well they're back now.

Yep - that thing about stuffing up marks is what I heard as well, and I do know a couple of people who got ridiculously low marks.

From what I've heard, those marks have now been corrected.

Koochkooch - to be fair, it sounds to me like the most likely thing to have happened is that somewhere on the table of names (alphabetical, by last name) and marks, the marks got slightly displaced. This is because the people I know who were affected all had similar last names, and if the marks are back up already, presumably it wasn't that hard to fix. While I do love some good old epidemiology bashing, such an error (if it was the case) could have happened anywhere, in any paper. I've been talking to a couple of Otago staff, and such errors happen all the time (albeit uncommonly in such an unfortunate way).
