Please not like NCEA!!
I myself always found that I was wanting to go more in depth than what we learnt in HUBS lectures. So I did my own reading up. I guess there will be people who will do the bare minimum, but I think when we are actually gunna be learning relevant stuff more people will probably enjoy going beyond the lecture notes

When we go to specialise we will have to study anatomy in depth for the relative body systems anyway. And they say you learn more in 6 months of PGY1 than the 6 years of medical school

Cut off for Otago med in 2009

Would be interesting to hear about the cut off for Otago med in 2009.... as i know alot of us would be curious to know. From what i gather it was around 89.5gpa and 54 weighted (raw) umat for hsfy general entry.

Do you actually know of someone who got in through general entry with a 89.5% average and weighted UMAT of 54?

That would be a ranking score of 77.7, and if that's the case, then that's the lowest confirmed score that I know of.

I would also be very interested to know the cut-off, so does anyone here know of anyone who got in (general entry) with a lower ranking score? Also relevant - would anyone on the weighting list mind posting their ranking score?

Lowest I have heard is gpa of 85% and a weighted UMAT of 48.1. Overall weighted score turns out to be around 73.

I have herd of someone with a gpa of 89.5 and weighted umat of 54 who got in and i would think this was really cutting it.

Sasol - I think the person u know probaly gained entry via rural as iam on the waitng list with a gpa of 89.1 and weighted umat of 53.

Hey guys just found this site. I got into med by general entry from HSFY with a weighted UMAT of 50.2 and a GPA of 87.3%. After chatting to people I know who have got in, this is the lowest they/I have heard of. My overall weighted score is 74.9.

Yeah the guy I know is rural, sorry forgot to mention it.

Kinda weird that the guy above had lower scores than you gr8t and got in. Maybe hes rural too.

Hey SASOL, nah I'm not rural. I just got in via the general thing for HSFY. Is it possible I got an offer that I wasn't supposed to(like it was supposed to go to someone else but they sent the offer to me by mistake)? Gosh I sure hope not!

I wouldn't dwell on things like that Sambo! Your average across your papers is one to be proud of.

Might be a good idea just to double check your calculations (e.g. was your average across your best 7 papers?, did you use UMAT marks and not percentiles?).

Ranking score = (best paper mark + 2nd best paper mark + 3rd best paper mark + ... + 7th best paper mark)*2/21 + (UMAT S1 mark*0.45 + UMAT S2 mark*0.45 + UMAT S3 mark*0.1)/3

The same goes to gtr8. Are you both absolutely sure of your numbers? Maybe you should calculate again?

Yeah I've triple checked my numbers and calculations and they are correct.

Is it possible for them to withdraw offers? Silly I know

What was the score for Dentistry entry over there? More specifically, what would the GPA be? Was it higher than Med

[offtopic] Sorry for hi-jacking your thread, but I didnt want to make a new one [/offtopic]

Do you mind posting your final ranking score koochkooch? Any values close to the cutoff should help to shed light on the situation.

Wow its very suprising to hear that someone got in with a gpa and umat lower than mine. Iam very sure about my numbers as my results where hubs1 91 cels 93 chem 87 hubs2 91 bioc 86 heal 87 maori 89 which works out to be 89.1 gpa. And my umat was S1 51 S2 59 S3 38 so weighted was 53.3. I think maybe the admissions department made a mistake on my scores as I know of a few people who are on the waiting list with scores a fair bit lower than mine. Or do you guys think it might not be based entirely on grades and umat maybe the want a good ratio of ethnicities, gender etc??

Funny junky - there was no "cut off" score for dentistry as such ie you needed gpa of above 70 with no paper less than a B- (65). After meeting this threshold you needed to have a umat score in the top 250 in each 3 sections from what i gather 50 raw score in each 3 sections would be a safe bet. The candidates are then interviewed and iam very sure that the interview ranking score is the deciding factor as I have a friend who has a 92 gpa and didnt get into dent while my other friend with a 80 gpa is on the waiting list.

Sorry im kinda noob at this dunno where the off topic button is.

Maybe they do try to get a good distibution of ethinicities, genders etc, but I don't know.
I don't think the admissions office would make a mistake, they would probably rigourously check everyones marks etc. Then a gain I don't know that either. I guess we can only speculate

Thats quite interesting, it's important to have a medical workforce that is representitive of the community, but then it makes it somewhat unfair to students, unless they segregated the admission categories in terms of gender and race, which of course would very horrible of them to do... quite the dilema

They might also try to get a distribution of people from around the country. Just a thought, unlikely though

For med o week do they put us into groups that we stay in for the 3 days ? Its going to be awesome by the sound of things
