Adelaide UAdel Medicine: General Discussion

If I do adelaide dent for a year, would that aid my chances at getting into adelaide med the year after (through internal transfer or plain ucat again + SA residence subquota... idk)? I am currently a NSW school leaver and missed out on a med interview

If Dent is a tertiary transfer course option, then yes, but the SA local sub quota is for school leavers only (understandably as everyone would be eligible if all you had to do was be a UAdel student so it’s irrelevant for the tertiary transfer pathway).

How much of an advantage do tertiary transfer students get (from dent to med in UAdel)?

I'd imagine no advantage whatsoever over BHealthSci etc subjects that are also eligible for tertiary transfer, but obviously 100% advantage over other non-standard applicants from non-UAdel courses as they are not eligible to apply for Med at UAdel at all and are limited to UNSW, JMP, JPM, Bond, JCU, and Curtin (in some circumstances).

Is it an advantage over interstate school leavers?

It's an entirely separate pathway and the two are not comparable. Your GPA is not compared to the ATAR of a school leaver. There's no advantage or disadvantage as you are not competing with each other only with other applicants within the tertiary transfer program.

what about ucat? would the cutoff be lower (lower than 96)

Probably, but you'll be competing against other Adelaide non-med uni students for the tertiary transfer quota. I don't mean to generalise, but getting a super competitive GPA in dentistry is generally harder than a course such as med sci because you're marked a lot on practical work, meaning you'll be at a slight disadvantage in that department. That's not to say you should be studying med sci (for the sole purpose of getting into med) either, but you should take dentistry only if you'd be happy carrying on with the course in the event you don't get into medicine.

It varies from year to year. We've had a single tertiary transfer report this year to date and yes, I believe it was lower than 96 (though can't remember the exact figure, you'd have to look in the thread). Keep in mind, though, that a lower UCAT doesn't mean the pathway is easier to be successful via. It's a very limited number of places available via this pathway and it is incredibly competitive.

So, if I really just want to medicine, should I bother with dent interviews? For reference, I have a 99.55 atar and 91 ucat

If you would be interesting in accepting a dentistry offer, then certainly. Or if you're unsure if you'd like to study dentistry, then yes as then at least you have the option open to you. If you can confidently say you have no desire whatsoever to study Dentistry, then no, I wouldn't think there's any point, personally. But others may have a different view and ultimately, it's an individual choice.

Another possible benefit of sitting the interview regardless of whether you're certain you'd like to study Denistry is simply for the experience of going through the process of an interview. A lot of school leavers have not been formally interviewed before and the exposure can be useful. (ETA: especially given the cost will be minimal/none this year due to Zoom interviews).

hi people. AS A RURAL RA3 INTERSTATE APPLICANT: I got a med interview offer with my 2860 score (86th):oops::oops::oops:.
but it gets better: my friend (also rural interstate) got an interview offer with (APPROXIMATELY) 50th PERCENTILE. he did not get an offer for dentistry however. so idk if this is necessarily good news or bad news but just thought id share to give some hope to fellow rural applicants

Thank you for this. Any chance you could gently confirm your mate's percentile rank as the lowest we've had reported before yours was 89th%ile, so a drop into the 50s would be pretty useful to clarify if possible.

Alright, confirming that he got 2480. Which is 48th percentile holy shit. Some things to note: Whilst he lives in RA3 now, he used to live in the Northern Territory for a couple of years which he included on his rural declaration thing. Additionally, he speaks languages other than english and has a """"""non-white""""" name - this probably doesn't matter but you never know 🤷‍♀️

Just an update on this, we also had a 42nd%ile RA4 from Qld report an invite.

ETA: I wanted to also point out that these rural percentiles are not unusual for UAdel. We’ve had them reported as ‘low’ as in the 20s in some previous years.

Has anyone done their Adelaide uni interview yet? If so, do you know if we’re allowed 5 minutes to write down on paper for the scenario questions? I know this has been the case in previous years but I’d like to know if it’s changed due to interviews being online

In the agreement that you agreed to (haha), it says we aren't allowed notes of any kind
