UGY2 Semester 1 Reflection and Thoughts
I'm gonna do a reflection and give my thoughts on the units taken. Hopefully, this will be helpful to some of you out there that are looking for alternatives to medicine/dentistry.

MRTY2101 - Radiographic Science 1
As outlined in my previous post, it's the main radiographic positioning unit of study. MRTY2101 in particular, deals with the appendicular skeleton (with the exception of the pelvis). The lectures are pre-recorded by the unit of study coordinator and practicals are run by her as well (alongside an ex-student assisting). There are also tutorials run by her as well which attempts to solidify the content covered in the lectures. I didn't like the lectures and how they arranged and talked about the content but I do know that some people in my cohort didn't really mind it all that much (NOTE: I believe she is no longer teaching this unit.). As to the practicals, they are run in the medical imaging suite which comprises of 5 actual x-ray rooms and 2 "dummy" medical imaging systems. These are also used for the OSCE examination. These were fairly helpful in preparation for placements (MRTY2104) as well as the OSCE examinations themselves. The tutorials were somewhat helpful running through some image critiquing, some pathologies, and questions regarding positioning and exposures etc. Personally, I didn't find the tutorials as useful as the practicals but that is my personal opinion. In terms of advice I would give to students, ensure you get an idea of the exposures for the Phillips machines that are used at university BUT ALSO to get the Bontrager's Handbook of Radiographic Positioning and Techniques. This can be pretty handy in terms of the radiographic positioning, but also the centreing for particular views.

MRTY2102 - Radiographic Evaluation 1
This unit mainly deals with the evaluation of general radiographic images for quality and interpreting plain radiographs for common pathologies and normal variants. The lectures are run in person and often contain a very large amount of slides. Don't be too alarmed tho, most of the slides are labelled radiographs! With that being said, the lectures are scheduled to run for 1hr and often presented in a rushed manner due to the time restriction. There are also tutorials which go through a series of different radiographs where you'll be asked to identify any abnormal pathologies or if the radiograph displays normal variants. There is sometimes image critiquing involved in the tutorials as well when asked for it but generally the main part of the tutorial is to solidify the knowledge of the lectures. For me personally, the tutorials are very helpful in preparing for both the mid semester and end of semester exams.

MRTY2103 - Image Optimisation and Processing
The unit looks more into the technical side of radiography including what influences image quality as well as the items related to it, procedures for quality assurance, and an understanding of modular transfer function (MTF), detective quantum efficiency (DQE), and spatial & frequency domain filters. Whilst most of the content in this unit isn't as applicable as MRTY2101 or MRTY2102 clinically, in some respects it can be helpful to know what is going on during maintenance of machines etc. All in all, the unit coordinator is fairly laid back and provides everything you need to know to pass the unit.

MRTY2104 - Radiography Work Integrated Learning 1
This is the main clinical placement unit where you'll experience what it is like to be a radiographer at either a private practice or hospital environment. Not much can be said about this because each individual student will have vastly different experiences depending on where they are allocated to and what types of patients and staff they have to work with. All I can say is that it gives us great outlook of the field as to what role we play as radiographers to benefit our patients. As for the Skillitics tutorials, I didn't bother attending or using the Skillitics software so I can't really speak for it heh :").

MRTY2105 - Radiographic Science 2
This unit of study continues to build knowledge of general radiographic examinations with a focus on radiographic anatomy and technique adaptation when applied to radiography of the axial skeleton. This unit of study has an evidence-based approach using research articles applied to case-based learning. Cross-sectional imaging primarily through the use of CT imaging will be introduced and students will be expected to demonstrate skill in recognising sectional anatomy.

This unit of study builds upon knowledge of imaging technology, image quality and radiographic anatomy. Students will be expected to evaluate general radiographic images for quality and identify anatomical structures, injuries and diseases of the human body in planar images, including significant medical findings requiring urgent information giving. This unit of study combines an evidence-based approach using research articles applied to case-based learning of the axial skeleton and trunk areas.

MRTY2107 - Image Technology 2
This unit of study extends students' knowledge of direct and computed digital radiography systems. Imaging principles of fluoroscopy, computed tomography, dental imaging and magnetic resonance imaging will be investigated with particular reference to equipment, safety, dosimetry and artefacts. Students will be expected to demonstrate an understanding of image processing techniques commonly applied in sectional imaging modalities. Projection radiography will be evaluated from a historical perspective, including changes in exposure factors resulting from newer technologies.

MRTY2108 - Radiography Work Integrated Learning 2
This unit of study continues to build knowledge and skill in work-integrated learning strategies and general radiographic examinations. Students will be placed in a work placement for 6 weeks and learn the professional and technical skills of a novice student radiographer. At the end of this unit of study, students are expected to have competently performed a range of general radiographic (appendicular and axial skeleton) examinations under supervision and developed appropriate professional care and imaging skills.

MRTY3119 - Imaging Through the Lifespan

This unit of study includes content and case studies that span from foetal imaging to forensic imaging. The learning will be built around important imaging pathways for distinct patient ages and presentations. This includes the use of ultrasound, especially for foetal and neonatal patients; the use of fluoroscopic imaging, especially for infant and paediatric imaging; plain radiographic imaging and specialised spinal imaging for scoliosis and kyphosis from infants to adolescents; comparative imaging, especially for elderly patients including bone mineral density quantification; mortuary and forensic imaging for all ages. The cases will examine the optimisation and justification for the use of non-ionising and ionising radiation imaging, the effects of dose on paediatrics as well as the sensitivities and adaptation needed for frail, young and elderly patients. The specific issues of advocacy, consent and imaging of patients of all ages, including deceased patients, will be addressed.

MRTY3120 - Radiographic Science 3
This unit of study is a core radiographic science subject that builds upon the knowledge of MRTY2101 and MRTY2105 with intermediate-complex imaging concepts, such as fluoroscopy, CT, MRI and interventional imaging. There is a focus on the use of various forms of contrast media that are used in radiographic examinations. Radiographic Science 3 includes cross-sectional imaging, using CT and MRI images of the central nervous system, hepato-biliary and gastrointestinal systems. This unit of study will also extend the students' knowledge of plain radiographic examinations (mobile and fixed units) in trauma and operating theatre scenarios, as well as involve discussion of interventional radiology concepts.

This unit of study explores the ethical and legal requirements of medical radiation practice in Australia. The unit of study takes a case-based approach to ethical, reflective and collaborative practice using key legislation as a framework for decision-making and discussion. Students will learn of the integration between legal requirements, mandatory notifications and the code of conduct as required by federal law and state licensing. The notion of leadership, culturally safe practice and patient advocacy will be explored.

Poor mental health poses a major challenge to our society, and health care professionals, among others, are charged with 'making a difference'. To do so, they need to be equipped with the most up-to-date knowledge of effective mental health approaches and interventions. This unit will overview major mental health conditions and significant social, philosophical, and historical influences on health care service delivery and reform to provide a context for contemporary rehabilitation practice. Students will be introduced to the goals, values and guiding principles of psychiatric rehabilitation and to practices that aim to address the culture of stigma and low expectations by society of people with mental health conditions. Rehabilitation interventions that have demonstrated efficacy in promoting recovery by reducing obstacles to participation for people with mental health conditions will be examined. Local and international research underpinning best practice in rehabilitation management and service delivery will be reviewed and consumer perspectives and experiences explored.

Admissions Into the Course Statistics
According to UAC, the Lowest Selection Ranks for BAppSc (DR) [Course Code: 513620] were the following:
Yes... It is high but if you don't get into University of Sydney, there are alternatives at other universities including University of Newcastle's Bachelor of Medical Radiation Science (Honours) (Diagnostic Radiography), Charles Sturt University's Bachelor of Medical Radiation Science (Diagnostic Radiography), Queensland University of Technology's Bachelor of Medical Imaging (Honours) and University of Canberra's Bachelor of Medical Radiation Science (Medical Imaging).

Accepting the Offer & Enrolling
Accepting the offer was a piece of cake. Fairly self explanatory. You will be provided with an email telling you how to accept your offer. It will also let you know how you can log back into Sydney Student.

Once you have confirmed your place (i.e. Accepted your offer), you will then receive an email a few hours later letting you know that enrollment is open. This email will have instructions on how to find where to enrol into the course. Make sure you have your Unique Student Identifier (USI) and Tax File Number (TFN) on hand ready to input into the online form. Personally, everything was extremely smooth. The only place I felt I had slight trouble with was selecting my units (because well... I didn't know what I was doing 😅😅😅). My advice at this stage would be to look at the Diagnostic Radiography Handbook (Link: Diagnostic Radiography Handbook Link) and enrol for the units accordingly to those that are outlined in the Year 1 section (both Semester 1 and 2). In my case the following units were shown on my handbook and so I chose these units.

Allocating Preferences on Sydney Timetable [Semester 1 ONLY]
Oh boy... allocating preferences was not fun. The fact that you have to choose from a range of options made my head hurt so much (especially selecting for HSBH1003). I mean look at Figure 3. I did not sign up for 10 million options being thrown at me if I'm being honest 😅.

Apart from being given a range of times for allocating preferences via Sydney Timetable, I later found that my preferences for MRTY1031 decided to change back to unallocated because USYD Admin thought it was a better idea to just arrange 4 "Sections" (Combos of Lectures, Tutorials and Practicals) instead of separating Lectures, Tutorials and Practicals. Although it was slightly inconvenient due to the fact that I had to go back to assign my new preferences, it did help with preferencing as I could actually see the schedule for this particular unit when put together into a "section".

Provisional Timetables Allocated [Semester 1]
Finally got my preliminary timetable for Semester 1! Looking at Figure 5a, you can probably see the 5 overlaps on one day. Don't be too concerned if you see that. You can check that these aren't "timetable clashes" by viewing by week (Select "Current Week" then just skip through each week making sure there aren't overlaps in activities) OR checking the dates (i.e. clicking on each individual activity) of these specific lectures/tutorials/practicals.

If there are overlaps on the same day, you should have a time period where you can review and adjust your timetable to sort out these "timetable clashes".

Essentially, it involved warm welcomes from important people from the Faculty and a panel of Allied Health Professors talking about each allied health degree offered at the University of Sydney and how "Allied health saves the world". It also covered information about the Diagnostic Radiography course and answered many of the cohort's queries about the course. When you get the opportunity to ask questions, please do ask them. Susan Wakil Health Building Tour [Diagnostic Radiography]

  • The tour involved a welcome, some complimentary food and drinks and then the actual tour of the Susan Wakil Health Building.
    CreativeSpace - Showing us the available technology available on campus such as the Design Hub computers (Adobe Stuff), Video Studio (Teleprompter + Camera + Screen) and an Audio Studio (Podcast type room). There are also 3D Printers and VR technology available for use to the University of Sydney Health Science Students.
  • Visited the Medical Imaging Suites which had phantoms and 4 X-Ray rooms, 1 Ultrasound room, 1 CT Scanner and 2 dummy X-Ray Machines.
  • Visited simulation rooms where there are creepy looking mannequins in "hospital beds", a room much like someone's home for Occupational Therapy and a room simulating the Physiotherapist's clinic.
  • Susan Wakil Health Building Library. Self-explanatory.

MRTY3120 - Radiographic Science 3
This unit of study is a core radiographic science subject that builds upon the knowledge of MRTY2101 and MRTY2105 with intermediate-complex imaging concepts, such as fluoroscopy, CT, MRI and interventional imaging. There is a focus on the use of various forms of contrast media that are used in radiographic examinations. Radiographic Science 3 includes cross-sectional imaging, using CT and MRI images of the central nervous system, hepato-biliary and gastrointestinal systems. This unit of study will also extend the students' knowledge of plain radiographic examinations (mobile and fixed units) in trauma and operating theatre scenarios, as well as involve discussion of interventional radiology concepts.

Poor mental health poses a major challenge to our society, and health care professionals, among others, are charged with 'making a difference'. This unit will overview major mental health conditions and significant social, philosophical, and historical influences on health care service delivery and reform to provide a context for contemporary rehabilitation practice. Hey, I was wondering if it would be realistic to obtain a competitive GPA for medicine in radiography. I was considering the possibility of potentially getting a high GPA in my first year undergrad, resisting the UCAT and then trying to get into undergrad med again. I was also curious to know if it was possible to maintain a competitive GPA throughout the degree so that I could consider applying for postgrad med. Obviously I still love radiography and would enjoy it as a career if I never made it into med but I think I'd prefer still medicine. Thanks for your help!

Chances are that if you enjoy it, you'll do well in it - keep that in mind. It's a very individualistic thing. Some will do well, others won't.

It could be as low as 3 days but don't be surprised if you need to come 4-5 days either. Your mileage may vary.

That being said, it will simply not be possible from 2nd year onwards to have at most 3 days. Pretty much all/most placement blocks are full time.

Hey there, I'm currently weighing up USyd diagnostic radiography and USyd oral health to list as a backup degree in case I don't gain admission into undergraduate medicine. I will be attempting non-standard entry into WSU/JMP/UNSW, and if that's unsuccessful I'll be applying for postgraduate medicine.

I wanted to ask, how hard is it to get a 6.5 - 7.0 GPA in Diagnostic Radiography? Would you recommend doing this over Oral Health?
