JPM WSU/CSU JPM: WSU General Discussion and Questions

Has WSU medicine got bad reputation?people seem to look down on it? Now I am hesitated . In Sydney people only treat usyd and UNSW as good medical schools.

The reputation doesn’t matter at the end of the day. You’ll be a qualified doctor at the end of it and university prestige will have no influence on your career opportunities.

it does affect to get in specialist training, isn’t it.
Ive said it once and I’ll say it again - no one will judge you based on where you graduate from. It’s based on your ability to perform as a doctor and who you know/references which determine if you’ll get in.
It’s discrimination and illegal to be bias towards schools as an employer.

We mods (including those that are already doctors) say it doesn’t matter on a very regular basis and no one believes us either!

I heard we still have to pay medical school fee besides HECS. Said about $15000 per year.is it true?

You may be misunderstanding the system. A year of studying medicine costs about 25-30k. (I used to know the exact figure, but can’t find it now, and this is more at FFP Universities). If you have a CSP or BMP the government pay all but about 12k per year (this may vary from Uni to Uni, I’ve not compared, but I pay just under that at UTAS). The 12k per year is what I put on HECS. So the only thing I pay upfront is the SSAF of about $200.00 per year split into two payments, one per semester.

In an article the USyd Dean wrote a med student costs ~55k/year there. Assuming it's similar at other schools this is paid by

- For CSP/BMP students: student pays 11k, gov pays 24k, the remaining 20k is subsidised by the uni or from int'l students (who pay typically 70-75k/year).

- Aus FFP students at UoM & MQ pay around 60k/year. Similar at Bond if we count a year = 2 trimesters.

- Aus FFP students at Notre Dame pay 35k/year. With no int'l students there it is thought the remaining amount is subsidised by the Church.

Can anyone get onto the blackboard site yet? I have already spoken to Penny about my vaccination card and she has told me on a side note that I am completely enrolled!

Sorry to keep asking questions, but how do we know if we got a bonded/unbonded place. I haven’t had any indication of having a bonded place during enrolment but is there a way i can be sure?

It should be indicated on your UAC offer email. For me it says that I’ve received a CSP in:
Doctor of Medicine - full time at Western Sydney University, Campbelltown campus (725505), start date 17 Feb 2020 (course type: CSP)

Beware CSP in itself means it's not full-fee paying. You are only sure when it says unbonded. Lack of unbonded/bonded info *usually* means unbonded but not guaranteed.
