Sounds good then. How do people generally find the interview? Do you have to be able to prove that you partake in sports and many extra curricular acitivties to make it into med? I don't see how I will have time for that next year as people i've spoken to keep saying that you are flat out in biomed all year :/
Has anyone flatted whilst doing biomed before or would staying in a hall be the better option with the amount of work in the first yr?

Mine was pretty much just a chat, nothing scary really. Obviously I was nervous as hell but it was heaps easier than I thought it would be. The interviewers are really nice and there's nothing that's exactly hard. All you do is talk about yourself and answer honestly.

You don't have to prove anything, but I think the interviewers want to know that you also have a life. If you can't find the time to do extra-curricular things in first year, then you're not gona be able to find the time to do things when you're a doctor...Basically the interviewers wana know that you're not just some academic freak with nothing else going for them ;)

I can't answer re your last question, I stayed at home

I planned a well thought out answer to the above question, but I see 4ever has beaten me to it. What he said.

that sounds manageable then :) thanks for the info. On the website it states that "students are required to complete at least one year of study outside the area of the Auckland DHBs during Years 4, 5 and 6"....so do you know if this means you have to move away from central Auckland to live for a whole year ?

By 'one year' they actually mean 24 weeks (heaven knows why). This actually comes down to quite about 20 weeks or so given that you have to spend a certain amount of time in a rural practice anyway. By 'out of Auckland', that includes a number of hospitals associated with the university excluding Auckland, Middlemore and North Shore hospitals (which are considered inside Auckland).

You also have an elective which you can do overseas and this also counts towards your time out of Auckland

If worse comes to worst, you can discuss your situation with the med school coordinators at the time and be exempt from the requirement

But hey, that's probably not something to be worrying about just yet :)

Don't give misleading information.....

The years in 4/5/6 are significantly longer than those of 1/2/3. If you are to spend a year out of auckland you are spending the WHOLE year from mid January - early November out of Auckland. Year 4 has 36 academic weeks and Year 5 has 35.

Get used to moving around I say. It's actually not a bad thing

Er.. here's what it says in our FAQ for Year 4:

"What is considered ‘a year’ for the purposes of ‘completing at least one year in/out of Auckland’?

Answer: The ‘year’ out of Auckland need not be taken in a single block of time. Over the course of the 3 clinical years, a total of 24 weeks must be spent outside the area comprising the Auckland DHBs, i.e. outside of the Waitemata, Auckland, and Counties Manukau DHBs. As an example, if you do both your Selective (Year 5) and Elective (Year 6) out of the Auckland area, you will have already spent half the required time (12 weeks) out of Auckland. Time spent in rural GP attachments in Years 4 & 6 are also considered ‘out of Auckland’ time."

They may have changed things a bit LG. Also, with the whole curriculum changes, I'm not sure how relevent the above info. will be for future students, though this is certainly how it will be for us

I'm planning to work perhaps 2 days a week after all the sem 2 exams finish but would it be a wise idea to do so? Considering that I'd have to prepare for interviews if I get an offer.

You could work 6 days a week and still have time to prepare for the interview. Seriously. There isn't much you can do in the way of preparing other than thinking

I spent all of 6 hours prepping for the interview 2 days before I had it. Most of that 6 hours I spent thinking about how I would phrase my answer to the inevitable "why do you want to study medicine" question, I also researched Maori health and culture which was an absolute life saver (I don't think I would have been offered a place had I not done this!)

Hope you're all doing well with your MH03 forms, two weeks left before the deadline

If anyone'd want advice/opinion regarding flick me a PM

G'luck

Has anybody heard anything about the removal of the interview process for the med intake of 2013? I just spoke with the university, and the lady said that it would probably be safe to assume that no changes are going to be made for next year, because there has been no official notice about it and its already halfway through October.

Also, I got accepted to O'ROrke Hall, and do they have a gym?
Thanks

There is a lot of information on O'Rorke Hall here:

Didn't we go over this when you emailed the university the other time? The other response from the head of department already clearly said no changes are being made for next year, so I'm not sure why you would bother listening to someone else (who is almost certainly less informed than the head of department) say "it's safe to assume that"...

The said response from the HoD did, however, indicate the possibility of a change being made from 2013 onwards, which would be something interesting to speculate about, though not exactly relevant given that you are currently in year 13, meaning you'll have the interviews (which are already confirmed to be in place for 2012) unless you plan to take a gap year...

That's for the med intake of 2012, this year's med hopefuls, interview process will stand, but next year onwards, hence for 2013 med intake, they are looking at taking the interview process out. Remember this year's hopefuls are the 2012 med students, and in 2012, next year, they will be the 2013 med student, so called 2013 med intakes (does that make sense?).

It does make sense to me. Although, I did think you worded your sentence quite awkwardly.

I chose to interpret the HoD's reply to mean that the interviews will still be in place as part of the admission process running in 2012 for people who will be in Med II in 2013, and that they may change things for the process in 2013 affecting people who will be in med in 2014. Your way of interpreting it has occurred to be, but the problem with it is that it makes no sense at all for the HoD to reply to your question about whether there will be interviews next year by saying that the interviews will be in place this year. I assumed that you would've mentioned that you'll be in first year next year and asked about what's happening next year, and dismissed the second interpretation which would have the HoD telling you that the interviews are running this year.

I can see why you're confused. But what he meant was that for the students this year, doing health science, interview process will still be in place for med entry in 2012. But for the students who will be doing health science in 2012, and wanting entry to med 2013, hence med intake for 2013, and onward, they are looking at removing the interview process. In my email, I wrote that I will be doing health science next year, therefore will affect me and others who will also be doing it next year, should any changes be made. Otherwise, there wouldn't really be much need for me to be emailing him, if it didn't affect my year.
Hopefully that clears things up.
