Just deviating off topic for a bit - I was just wondering (for any current med students) when we start getting information about the second year course - like text books to buy, course guides, final timetables etc - I figure it wont be till at least mid jan - but I am going overseas for a while (miss Freshers camp :( ) and don't want to be bombareded by a whole list of to-dos right before semester 1 begins - so am just trying to mentally plan in advance

Cheers :)

You don't need a stethoscope until 3rd year like the other have been saying, but even then you could get away without one easily enough until the start of 4th year. Course guides you get during the 2 orientation days or on the first day of lectures. You'll also get a timetable during orientation, but you may get a draft one earlier than this - I can't really remember (pm me if you want me to send you mine from 2nd year to have a look at). Textbooks you don't need to worry about till the start of class, you'll get a list (or there's probably one already up on the library website for MBChB 203/205/209/211), and at freshers or orientation day or just ask one of us what textbooks are recommended and are actually used, but best thing is to wait see what sort of textbooks you prefer.

When that happened, I almost thought it was a joke considering the test was actually going pretty well . I think I almost finished the paper when they said it was cancelled...should have seen the expression on my face...

Haha! I was in the room that discovered that the papers were half full so we never started. Just sat there awkwardly while the co-ordinators tried to make small talk.... With the whole class ;)

COngrats to all who made it into Med 2013. Sadly I didn't:(
Now that I have stopped crying everyday .... does anyone know how easy/difficult it is to get A+'s going down the path of completing the BHSc and applying as a grad? Or is it easier to complete a BSc instead?

I'm not sure what to advise.

I reckon getting them A+'s with BHSc is incredibly difficult. The faculty is not shy about divulging their practice of handing out very few of these grades each semester. It is possible to do really well, but I wouldn't be naive enough to expect straight A+'s - even with hard work. BHSc grads MAY have a slight advantage when it comes to med school interviews due to knowledge of the industry, personal connections with interviewers (the faculty will get to know you on a name basis) and non-science specific skills they can bring to the table. Your poplhlth knowledge may not help directly with your day to day tasks as a doctor but no doubt will shape your views and attitude towards medicine, health practice and treatment plans.

Switching to a BSc degree might prove to be better in terms of academic achievement but you'll have to catch up on three to four papers over the next two years. The time frame isn't the issue - it's more the amount of work. You will likely have to pick up summer school and this can be strenuous. You may feel physically and mentally drained.

I'd have a good hard look at your grades this year. Science vs poplhlth. If one is that little bit more enjoyable or easier for you, I'd recommend going down that pathway.

Post or PM for any specific questions - many BHSc/BSc students will be in your position now so it's great to discuss it.

After not getting into Medicine this year, and declining Optometry I have decided to take on the possible graduate entrant pathway into Med by carrying on my Biomedical Degree! I realize that this is going to be a huge risk and really depends on my dedication and passion I have for medicine, but would love to hear some advice from the BSc Biomed graduates who successfully gained entrance into the MBChB programme or Otago.
(Possibly the choice of papers I should do in 2nd year~ I am leaning towards Reproduction, Growth and Metabolism research area as it interests me :)

Sounds like a plan! See you maybe in MEDSCI 313 next year ;)

I have heard medsci 203 is difficult but quite enjoyable.

HI everyone! Unfortunately I didn't get into med either, but well done to everyone who did! I am switching to Pharmacology and will apply under the graduate entry for Australia, Auckland, and Orago. I went through the forums for interesting Gen ed papers, has anyone done youthWrk 152g or EDUC 122g? I would really appreciate any advise on what other Gen Ed or Science papers that everyone would recommend. Thank you :)

I did Youthwork 152G in 2010 and found it a fairly breezy paper. From what I remember, it was a 1 hour lecture and 1 hour tutorial each week. Lectures were based on short set readings and tutorials were dedicated to group discussions about the lecture topic and then sharing our thoughts with the rest of the tutorial group. You learn about issues affecting the youth of New Zealand and how some of those issues can be addressed
(that semester, there was a lot of emphasis on teaching the youth to use the theatre as a way to portray their thoughts/feelings etc...). I remember one tutorial was spent drawing up a holiday program for youth and having to justify how each activity would benefit the participants etc... In terms of workload, there isn't a lot and the lecturers are clearly passionate about youth work.

A GenEd paper I really enjoyed was Dance200G. If you don't mind performing in front of a small group, this is a great paper. Not much thinking to do during the semester, though in the second half, you will have to co-ordinate practice times with your group for your 1-2 minute choreography assessment. Two performances at 20% each, 10% for 'participation' in the weekly debate (which pretty much means turning up to one 1 hour lecture and watching while the 'louder' class members try to argue their point in the last 2 minutes of lecture time - I scored 7.5% and pretty much stayed mute through all the 2 minute debates) and 50% for the final exam which consists of 5 short statements that you argue for or against. There is a 2 hour practical session every Friday where you learn/practice your performances with your group. We had a few engineering and commerce students in the paper who agreed that Dance200G was definitely the best part of their week where they could just wind down. I did pretty badly on my performances, sitting on a B average before the exam. I finished with an A- in the paper so you are able to bump your grade up well in the exam, which for me was one of the easiest parts of the paper. I enjoyed this paper and you get to make some good friends with those in your groups.

All the best with finding a good Gen Ed paper for you :)

Okey doke, so as per the HSFY 2012 thread, the OLY1 2012 thread is now past its used-by date (and there's a 2013 one set up), so I've merged it with the archive.
