For me it was staggered release and just on SSO - it wasn't emailed. Could have changed but staggered release and SSO still seems logical

and indeed the letter from them did state

The final outcome of your application will be determined by your final results, UMAT and interview scores and will be posted on Student Services Online on 21 December 2012.

so as you say that's where to look :-)

got an offer!!! im very sorry for complaining about an 8.5GPA but i was genuinely worried
see you all at freshers!!!

Waitlisted :] who do I contact to find out what my position is and interview score was?

EDIT: emailed Tanya Savage and the FMHS, though I got a reply that Ms. Savage was away for the holidays. Is it possible to call in and ask someone else? I just want to know where I stand. It's another 3 week wait...

They're all away on holiday until then and the office is closed, if you're on the waiting list you have a good chance of a spot but Tanya won't be able to confirm anything really until the 7th which is the deadline for everyone to either accept or decline their officers. It sucks not knowing I know :-(

Hi Lemons,

Hey Guys,

I posted this on one of the pages last year so I just copied and pasted this to save you digging it out

I was on the waitlist over the 2010-2011 summer two years ago for Auckland Uni. For me it sucked because I didn't have a clue what it was all about, but if I knew what the waitlist really was like, the wait would have been much easier. For the 2010 intake (the year before me) 20 people got waitlisted and 18 people got in and this was told to me by Tanya Savage when I was on the waitlist last year (that is a 90% sucess rate - which was way better than what I expected, as I thought the waitlist was a polite way of saying declined). In my year there were 25 people placed on the waitlist and I know at least 19 people got in (the reason that the waitlist number was increased to 25 was because Otago got an extra 30 places I think, and Auckland medical school anticipated more places opening up, but this had less of an impact than expected) so this was approximately an 80% success rate.

The bottom line is that the medical school has not said no and they are still interested in you as an applicant. They also believe that you have a great chance of getting an offer eventually so this is all good news. Generally the University can predict how many places that become available due to the trends they have observed over the past few years. These offers are only made when a place is declined by a person who already has been offered one. This generally occurs around the 10th to the 20th of January which was the deadline the medical school gave applicants to accept their places (and last year a couple of extras did come in after this date in my year). Unfortunately the bad news is that you wont find out anything until the 5th of January at least or whenever the office re opens (which is about that time). However, unfortunately people only start finding out about the 10th so it is very unlikely you will hear anything before then. However I hope it turns out well for you (and judging from past years it should do :) ) and please feel free to ask anything because I realise how hard it is being in limbo after my experiences last year

Aww, thanks a lot, Dip :]. That is quite reassuring. 'Limbo' is a nice way of putting it. But with an 80-90% success rate, I'm feeling a lot more confident.

Haha, it's not so much that I'm waitlisted, as it is the fact that I'll have to wait 3 weeks for a verdict. But I sure as hell am not gonna complain xD. Though I'll check out some BSc 2nd year courses just to be safe. That, and I need to deal with Studylink all over again .___.

I was wondering if I could still find out what position on the list I am? Or will that also need to wait until the office reopens?

That's all good, happy to help!

In terms of finding out your position on the waitlist, sometimes they tell you, and sometimes they don't. I was told my position, however, the following year my brother who also got waitlisted wasn't told his position, so that was a bit of a coincidence haha (we both ended up getting in).

And yeah the wait does suck, especially when you have had to wait long enough already  but the reassuring thing is that your prospects do look good for med school next year (yy)

Congrats to all you kids who got into med for 2013!

Any recommendations on what general ed course to take?

Econ 151G is a great gen ed paper, pretty straight forward and a nice change from the rest of the papers. Good luck getting a place in it though, only about 300 students allowed to enrol and this time last year, the quota was already reached

i did maori 130G which was pretty interesting, and not too difficult to do well in (no-one did the course readings haha). it would also be helpful for an interview at auckland, although i didn't get asked a question on maori health in mine. that being said, you do need to come in on a wednesday just for it (usually no other lectures on wednesday) which is quite difficult. i believe econ 151 is the typical biomeders choice. history 103G and law 121 would not be good choices (judging from friends experiences). pick something you're interested in and you'll do well though :)

Thanks guys, ECON is looking pretty promising tbh, only two tests the entire semester and plussage applies :)

I've done an acct degree but the acct paper looks a bit average really, any of you guys know anyone who did ACCTG 151G?

Wow haven't been on here in AGES
Congrats to all who got in!!! Hopefully will be seeing some of you around next year :)

Just adding my two cent piece RE GenEds
I did Disability Studies (DISAB 113G) this year- It was media/social studies type paper - it was quite an interesting paper and a refreshing change from the other OLY1 papers plus we had only 1 lecture a week and hardly any tutorials. Some of the content especially in terms of the NZ disability strategy etc could be quite strategic for your interview.
The only one downside to papers like DISAB, HISTORY 103G etc (so the bachelor of arts gen eds) is that you have to do assignments - for example an essay, a report, a photograph taking exercise which may for some take a lot of time and may coincide with your OLY1 tests. Also depending on how good your English essay writing skills are - it might be harder to get a good mark.
At the end of the day you only need to maintain a B+ average for all your papers - so no one cares if you get a B- as your other core papers will hopefully balance it up. Just consider whether you would rather have a more straight forward gen-ed so you can focus on precious MEDSCI or if you want to do a paper that you are really interested, because if you get into med you wont get an opportunity to do a gen-ed again.
Talk to others and have a look at the papers - but try to decide before enrollments open because some like ECON fill up fast!
Good Luck :)

Like the others have said, definitely take ECO 151G. It's by far the easiest gen ed out there and it was recommended to me by many med students older than me. It's highly popular so make sure you some how enrol into it early on.

Honestly speaking, I still don't know what the ECON lecturer looks like; I didn't go to a single lecture. I did this because MEDSCI was really hard so I needed the extra time to study. Also, I had done eco all the way through school so I was quite confident that it wouldn't be an issue in the end.

It was our last exam and we had about 2 and a half days to study for it, so I opened the course guide (hadn't even touched it since I bought it) and crammed like crazy. Was definitely happy with my grade when it came out.

So what ever you do, do take eco! :)
