Goddamn that went fast. I had a very personal interview; they started with "If there is one thing you would like to tell us in this interview what would it be?", and it went from there. It was more of a conversation than an interview, with no clear boundaries between questions, all of which were open ended. It is all a bit of a blur, but here are some of the areas I got asked on:
1) "Tell us about Yourself"
2) "If there is one thing you would like to tell us in this interview what would it be?"
From here I told them about overseas travel I did and how that led me into medicine. That took up the majority of the interview, which I don't think was planned. From this another couple of questions (paraphrased) were:
3) "What would you do if in 5 years time you found yourself having doubts about being a doctor because you thought all doctors are arrogant?"
4) "How do you manage stress?"
5) "What would you do if a supervisor made a negative comment about a patient?"
Then the interview got abruptly cut short, which really annoyed me. One second I was in the middle of answering a question, the next they were showing me the door without asking "is there anything else you would like to say?". The interview before mine ran overtime, so they seemed to take the time out of my interview.
Overall I think the interview went very well. They asked me questions that were deeply personal, and I was nothing less than completely open and frank. I did have to stop in the middle of a sentence to take a deep breath and have a drink because I was so nervous, but the interviewers were very understanding.
Things I did not like about the interview were that I wasn't really given a chance to plainly state why I want to do medicine. The interview was focused on my life experience, so I hope that my motivations were clear to them and did not get lost in the mix.
My friend who had an interview at the same time as me said that she had a very generic interview, with all the expected questions. Just goes to show how different each set of interviewers are. I had two Scottish women who played the good cop/bad cop routine, whereas my friend had two bad cops...
Good luck everyone who has their interview next week. Just forget about everything that has happened this year, you've made it through the hard part.
