Really confused with enrolling for classes lol, do some classes not start enrollment till later on? For example I can't find POPHLTH 101 in the classes when I go to enrolment. Can I add all courses I want now and come back later and add more classes? Sorry for such naive questions lol!

ETA: basically, can I click 'finish enrolling, and then come back later and enrol in more classes that aren't available at this time?

If i am to add my 2 cents to this gened discussion. I took INTBUS151G. I think this is a paper that is overshadowed by the econ gened but is still pretty good. I terms of assessment it only has 8 on-line tests during the semester and then an end of year final exam. This was a few days after the rest of my exams so lots of time for cramming. All lectures are recorded so this paper requires little commitment throughout the semester. Only downsides would perhaps be that the lectures are a little boring and the information that you learn is not really applicable to medicine; although you could say that about a number of other geneds.

Congrats to all you kids who got into med for 2013!

Any recommendations on what general ed course to take?

I reckon a nice choice for those who have already done several years of languages at high school, would be to pick that language for your gen ed. Chances are you'd probably already know 100% of the content being taught, and would probably be able to ace the assessments with minimal stress.

I think there is something in the general education regulations that only allows you to take a language if you have less than a level one knowledge of it. I friend of mine couldn't take french as a gen ed because of this.

Looking through the course requirements for the languages i see that you have to complete a language ability declaration to confirm your ability

any of you guys know anyone who did ACCTG 151G?

NO!!!!

Do anything but that.

Bit late but well done to all who got into med. So very proud of you :3

For those who didn't: AU missed out on some great candidates! If you can afford it, I strongly suggest grad entry. Two years actually flies by pretty quick.

I wasn't in such a scenario at the start of the year as all my courses had opened - (I did biomed btw). But yes, definitely, you don't have to add all the courses all at once. You can add them, drop them, swap them whenever you want. Just do this by logging into SSO and you should be all set to go.

Adding to the geneds discussion: I really enjoyed MAORI130G - lecturer was very passionate about the topic, the test was easy (though the exam was a bit harder) and if you did New Zealand history in Year 13, much of the material will overlap. In my year, the lectures were on a Tuesday and Thursday so I still had Wednesday off (although I don't know when the lectures are in 2013).

Do not, under any circumstances, take History 103G, unless you really really really love history as an academic pursuit, and you enjoy being tested on rhetoric the lecturers pride themselves on having conjured. It took much more study than I had time to give, which majorly impacted on my marks for my other papers. Do not pick a demanding Gen Ed.

Thanks guys, ECON is looking pretty promising tbh, only two tests the entire semester and plussage applies :)

I've done an acct degree but the acct paper looks a bit average really, any of you guys know anyone who did ACCTG 151G?

In first year I'd definitely go with Econ 151G, you don't even really need to go to lectures to get an A+ for this paper. Everything that you need is in the course guide, you don't have to refer to textbooks at all (I didn't ).

ACCTG151G, I did this paper as my gen ed in second year biomed, it's a really easy paper, all about kiwisaver and the lectures are really basic, but it's quite hard to get a A+. I think I averaged 95.6% last year for this paper and still only got an A, but that might have been because they screwed up the mid sem test (it was cancelled cos some classes had pages missing). So overall this is actually quite a decent paper content wise, but grade thresholds are pretty high up.

I was in the same cohort as you :P

As said above.. It's a bloody easy paper but you'll find that with most "easy" papers that the grade thresholds are high. FTVMS 110G (I think?) is a difficult one but has some really sweet content and an awesome lecturer. It's all about advertising. I think there may be a few other papers that are gen eds within the media school and I'd definitely recommend that.

When that happened, I almost thought it was a joke considering the test was actually going pretty well . I think I almost finished the paper when they said it was cancelled...should have seen the expression on my face...

Just deviating off topic for a bit - I was just wondering (for any current med students) when we start getting information about the second year course - like text books to buy, course guides, final timetables etc - I figure it wont be till at least mid jan - but I am going overseas for a while (miss Freshers camp :( ) and don't want to be bombareded by a whole list of to-dos right before semester 1 begins - so am just trying to mentally plan in advance

Cheers :)

Not a current med student, but if you look on cecil (provided you've enrolled) there's a class page up! However there's only a guide for last year but there's information about textbooks and stuff up.

COngrats to all who made it into Med 2013. Sadly I didn't:(
Now that I have stopped crying everyday .... does anyone know how easy/difficult it is to get A+'s going down the path of completing the BHSc and applying as a grad? Or is it easier to complete a BSc instead?

:( my sincerest apologies for not getting into medicine, I cant give you any advice on BSc/BHSc but I do wish you all the best and hopefully your passion will one day see you in medicine. Best wishes!

I would suggest that when buying things like Stethoscopes to buy them via Amazon and then ship them to NZ via NZ Post's Youshop US-NZ delivery service (YouShop | New Zealand Post). From what I have seen you can get products for around 1/3rd the price compared with how much they cost buying them from a NZ distributor.
