Bachelor of Oral Health

Oh wow! Will it matter if I put it in my 5th preference for SATAC? Like would getting a Medicine interview offer prevent me from getting a Dentistry or OH interview offer since it's ranked higher? Btw I got 2750 would that qualify me for OH?
You can put it wherever you want on your preferences list, on October 31st (or whenever it is this year), you'll get separate interview offers for all of the courses that you qualify for, which you need to book individually. For example, I put Adelaide unbonded + bonded as 1st + 2nd pref and dentistry as 4th pref, I got two separate emails that day asking me to log in to the interview booking portal to book my interviews. Having dentistry as a lower preference didn't affect my interview eligibility, and neither will Bachelor of Oral Health for that matter. Don't worry about that, just attend all your interviews and when January comes along, you'll get the highest preference you meet the requirements for.

Haha I'm putting the same preferences that you put haha. Ah okay I see thanks!

If you got interview invite for both UAdel med and dent, do you have to do both or just one interview? If both, to arrange the time can be an issue for interstaters unless they do online this year.

There's separate interviews for medicine and dentistry, and for good reason: they're different careers, and so the questions asked in each interview are tailored to the course in question.

Bachelor Oral Health with UCAT & interview, must be the only in Australia that does that?
There's so many hurdles that anyone who wants to and goes to the effort of applying/sitting the UCAT/sitting the interview will get an offer lmao. I guess it's a way of testing motivation ;)

Hi i’m a year 12 student who’s interested in dentistry and atm i’m still hesitant between 2 courses Bachelor of Oral Health Therapy and Bachelor of Medical Science at USYD. Which degrees should i choose if i want to take the GAMSAT and apply for postgraduate Doctor of Dental Medicine after i finish my undergraduate degree? Like which degrees would provide me good and fundamental knowledges that i will be well-prepared for the GAMSAT exam in particular and Doctor of Dental Medicine in general. Many people said Oral health is more beneficial as I will study about teeth and dental stuff during 3 years but there might be higher chance that i will get into Medical Science as Oral Health Therapy is very competitive due to the limited spots available and I’m not sure if i’m able to pass the MMI. Does anyone have any tips for the MMI? Is it difficult to get satisfactory performance? And also how’s the experience between 2 courses guys? Is it a lot different as i heard Oral Health therapy is a really small cohort (just around 35-40 people), and Medical Science is way bigger.

Hey apinchofsalt, sorry for the late reply - I can see that you posted that comment a week ago so I hope this is still helpful. I'm a current D2 (my tagline says Dentist but I have no idea how to change it - fixed! from LMG!). As someone who did BOH before BDS, I think this is an area I can help with. There are definitely pros and cons to doing BOH or BMedSci and I will try to summarise them below.

If you do BOH first...
+ Guaranteed career and professional registration with AHPRA as an OHT after graduation, so you have a good backup option with great pay even if you don't get into dentistry
+ Overlap between BOH/BDS means that you will be years ahead when it comes to hand skills, patient communication, diagnostic skills etc.
- Does not adequately prepare you for GAMSAT, although taking the UCAT for BDS is still an option
- Hard to score well due to practical elements, some of which you can't overcome just by studying
* As a note, BOH is a pathway to DMD at Syd, but not at Melbourne as it does not satisfy the listed prerequisites (something to take note of)

If you do BMedSci first...
+ Preparation for GAMSAT if you pick the right majors/electives
+ Wide ranging postgraduate options if you change your mind about dentistry
- Very limited career outcome if you fail to get into dentistry, most graduates who fail to get into medicine/dentistry end up as research assistants or further study
- Competitive environment regarding grades; most students in BMedSci have failed to get into undergraduate medicine/dentistry locally or interstate and hope to gain admission into graduate courses

How does one get selected for the MMI interview for the Bachelor of Oral Health at the University of Sydney?
Fyi I'm a Victorian Student so our ATARs come after the interviews.

From the UAC website it looks like that selection for the MMI is based of your ATAR

However i have no idea how this will play out with victorians getting their delayed atars, an email would be best sent to the faculty to ask.

is it possible to provide any links to documents that says the BOH is a pathway to USyd's DMD program? I haven't heard of this before but was wondering if the keep spots aside for BOH undergrad students?

Hey Friedwater, I've linked a page from USyd that lists Oral Health Therapy as a means of satisfying the Biology pre-requisite for DMD '21. I very much doubt Sydney will have special spots for their BOH graduate, but I can't confirm as I've never studied there.

In any case, you should always keep your options open and apply for both BDS/DDS after your undergraduate degree as the difference between undergraduate/graduate Dentistry is only a year, unlike Medicine.

Wait just a quick question, is the bachelor of oral health the postgrad dentistry course for Adelaide? Saw on SATAC for the ATAR and selection rank stuff they had <5 for all of them?

Not sure what you mean by the SATAC stuff but no, it’s not the graduate entry Dent course, it’s an entirely different course that doesn’t automatically lead to dentistry (though you could use it like any bachelor degree to apply via GAMSAT).

Yeah thought so! It sounds like a oral health therapist or dental hygienist course - I was just suprised because it also needed UCAT and interview for the selection process - also <5 is seen here:

There are a few similar courses that require these factors. USyd Oral Health, I believe. Both are included in the interview data thread here.

I don't think UCAT is a requirement for USyd Oral Health.
It's not mentioned on USyd or consortium's website.

UAC says its just MMI for Sydney's Oral Health degree - no UCAT

Still though, very suprising that UCAT and interviews are required for such courses across Australia - any idea why they are so hardcore? like you don't see a UCAT or MMI for nursing
