Choosing Between Universities and Offers

Hey UCATBOY, sorry for the late reply. Yes LMG is correct, basically, my friends thought and I think this is a fair point, if people are leaving their applications active (even if they have accepted elsewhere) it will take longer for people to get offers as it often takes a week for offers to automatically lapse meaning that it may be too late for some people to organise an interstate move especially with Covid-19 you could imagine that it makes it even more difficult to move at the moment.
Understood!

I have an offer from Griffith and also Adelaide dental schools.
I am SO torn about which to go with.

On one hand, the Adelaide course looks AMAZING and it’s commonwealth supported the whole way through. On the flip side, I am from the Gold Coast and so there wouldn’t be any moving involved in going to Griffith.

Does anyone have any advice? Is the Adelaide course a lot better? I love the idea of the integrated learning approach.
Adelaide is so much better in terms of facilities and everything and someone told me that the last years of dentistry at griffith is full fee?? But also its ur home state and it would save you the trouble of rent and everything so i think cost wise they may cancel out so pick which uni u love

Is anyone choosing utas over their home state?

Hi everyone,
I have received 3 offers for dentistry but I'm having trouble choosing which one to go with:
La Trobe, CSU, or Griffith?
Even though it's fee structure is the most pricey, Griffith is closest to home for me.
Which uni has the best type of teaching or facilities? Thanks

Teaching/Facilities are quite similar across all dental schools though Griffith has better facilities compared to the other 2 they also have far more students than they probably should have hence the quality should be similar. The cost should be your main deciding factor and then comes location. I would advise choosing between Orange or Bendigo

Can you live at home for UQ? From the info you’ve provided here, I’d go UQ easily (CSP, possibly living at home, internship location).

no my family is from Toowoomba that'd be a long ass commute. All of my friends are going to UQ and at least I'd be closer to family than for flinders or csu but it's 7 years 😭
I guess 5 years with bmp is worse though?

I wouldn’t say it’s objectively worse, it’s different. Additional things for you to consider:
1. Although it’s more $$, is it financially feasible for you/your family to fund UQ accom? Are there relocation scholarships you can apply for (usually there are quite a few of these - definitely check out the possibilities)
2. How much benefit (if any) would remaining with your friends have? Is that something you’re factoring in. I can guarantee you’ll make new friends, especially in such a small cohort at CSU, but how much would you prefer to continue the Med ‘journey’ (I hate that term, sorry! Haha) with your mates?
3. How much research have you done re. the implications of a BMP?
4. The importance of reliable family support. The days of border closures, for the most part, are probably behind us but… no guarantees.

Home state: QLD
Offer 1: Monash CSP
Offer 2: Unsw kens CSP
Any scholarships offered: none
Any accommodation secured: Monash I've applied for accommodation and should hear back from them this week or next week, but for UNSW i havnt applied for accommodation yet and will be considering doing it today
Internship location preference: dont care tbh
Other important information: my brother is moving to sydney to study finance at unsw so it would be nice to be with him, we would be at separate accomodations for the first year and then move into accomodation for the second year onwards. I also have mates moving to sydney whereas i dont know anyone in melbourne but im sure i can make some friends if i go there. A couple more important things are below:
With monash as a rural applicant i dont have to do any specific rural placements for rural students
With unsw i have to spend 1 year rurally from years 3-6 as i went through the REAS system.
Monash 5 year vs UNSW 6
I'm keeping my options open for specialisation but am interested in surgery or anaesthesia (obviously this will change) but the ILP may help this? but then again monash does do the honours program as well.
Monash still has an academic weighting for internship whereas unsw is kinda pass/fail and ballot system which makes me want to move towards unsw.
Tough decision but very grateful for 2 offers and definitely dont want to come across as being arrogant or anything. Would really appreciate some guidance.

Hi everyone

I received a BMP offer today for the University of Newcastle (doctor of medicine) and am very grateful.
However as I am a GWS student I put WSU as my first preference, UNSW as my second and Newcastle as my third. I achieved a UCAT of 3200 and my GWS score was 767.7 (which is very high)

My question is, is it possible to still being offered a WSU offer? Is it possible to switch with another student who may possibly be in the same position (being offered WSU when their local university is UNE)? Can anyone share their insight into this?

Also should I contact the university to find out if further offers will be made before accepting my UNE offer?

its possible to switch unis but not for reasons like proximity - more like for crisis reasons and you have to go through the deans I think

Home state: SA
Offer 1: Adelaide CSP
Offer 2: WSU CSP
Any scholarships offered: No
Any accommodation secured: Can stay with family in Adelaide.
Internship location preference: Doesn't matter
Other important information: Leaning heavily towards Adelaide for being able to stay with family and not worry about accommodation costs or moving. Just wondering whether going to WSU would have any advantages? As far as I know the course is a year shorter than Adelaide so can start earning quicker but not sure how much this really matters in the long run.

What is the major differences between Adelaide Med and Flinders Med? I have a mate that literally wants to do med but is choosing to do Adl Dent over Flinders Med as he didnt get an Adl med offer as of yet and doesnt want to go interstate.

Two well established, long-standing medical programs. Neither would be the wrong choice. I’d personally select Monash on the basis of it being a year shorter given you are not from either state, and I really don’t believe the ILP will assist your chances of getting onto a training program many, many years later when you are finally due to apply. Cost of living will be pretty significant in both places.

Congrats on your offers!

Unfortunately you will not be able to swap with another student. The system can simply not accommodate this for many reasons, perhaps the most important being that you would be jumping the queue on however many students at WSU who were ranked above you and didn’t receive a place offer.

Just accept the UNE offer and have WSU at the top of your preference list in case there are any subsequent offer rounds. Accepting it won’t affect your chances elsewhere.

Congrats on the offer!

Adelaide: studying “medicine” for the entire 6 years.
Flinders: provisional entry with the latter four years being the “medicine” bit.

Your mate is making a strange decision if that’s true.

Congrats Flynn. Two great choices.

The ILP won’t help at all with specialty choices. It’s more to dabble in research. Especially in the current arms race environment of specialty training.

Having friends and family moving to Sydney, even if you’re living in different apartments or whatever is a major advantage. Go UNSW.

One extra year in uni is the only downside I can see but even that is a bit of a shoulder shrug. A year in the bush isn’t the worse thing either, some would argue that it’s good to see a breadth of environments in a pretty low stakes setting (ie. compared to being an intern or much later in your career/life)

So wasn't expecting to get Queensland med but I am now stuck with a difficult decision. I have 1 friend going to Newcastle and at least 3 or 4 others going UQ. I initially thought I was gonna pick Newcastle because it is 5 years compared to Queensland's 7 years but I really don't know. I also have to factor in that I could be able to visit my family back in Sydney every couple weeks if I went Newcastle which would be difficult at Queensland. UQ also has a society that appeals to one of my big hobbies while Newcastle does not. Ultimately, I would like some second opinions and also extra information on costs, accommodation availability (I've tried Callaghan on-campus but the waitlist is impossible for this semester), social life, lifestyle etc.
Thank you guys so much!

I think it would be bold to choose an interstate 7 year program over a 5 year program where you’ll be able to visit your family easier, when both are CSPs. UON seems like the obvious choice to me.

Also, congrats on your multiple offers!

I’d break this down into:
1. Differences in degrees: 5 vs 7 years (neither is necessarily better or worse), opportunity to do a bachelor degree in a non-Med topic of interest vs going straight into Med (again, neither is better or worse), guaranteed internship in Qld vs NSW. Which of these are important to you?
2. Social, Financial, Lifestyle: looks like there are pluses and minuses in both opportunities.

At the end of the day there is absolutely no way of knowing which is the right choice. And in this situation, when you have to move away for both and both are CSPs, it’s even more difficult! But I’d recommend chatting with your parents/other supportive people and once you make a decision, commit to it and leave the ‘what if’s’ behind.

Good luck and congrats!
