Choosing Between Universities and Offers

Home state: NSW
Offer 1: WSU CSP
Offer 2: UNSW BMP
Any scholarships offered: No
Any accommodation secured: I live right near UNSW and don't have accomodation for WSU
Internship location preference: NSW
Other important information: Any advice would be appreciated, UNSW would be really convenient for me but it's BMP and a year longer so idkk which one to pick. I'm also 2 years out of high school so I'm not sure if the quicker path is more wise or not
Of course WSU better. BMP program means 3 years in rural

Do you have Sydney accom that would suit for WSU?

Hang on: basically take the advice you already requested and received based on a hypothetical and apply it to this… that’s my answer… if anything UAdel CSP is less desirable than UNSW CSP for a NSW based applicant so I have nothing new to add.

Home state: VIC (Melbourne)
Offer 1: CQU Bundaberg (CSP)
Offer 2: Notre Dame Advanced Biomed Sydney (CSP/BMP decided later)
Any scholarships offered: None
Any accommodation secured:None
Internship location preference: idk. I'd like the option of either Sydney or Brisbane but should be fine heading anywhere in Aus.
Other important information:
CQU is 3+4 years while Notre Dame is 4+4 years. I'm 18 yo, never worked, but will need to find work so cover some of my costs.

I'm leaning towards CQU as it's a year shorter and would have lower HECS and rental costs. I think I'll like the laid-back lifestyle but will not really know till I've lived it. I currently don't know what specialisation to pursue but I'm leaning towards General Practice.
From a career perspective are there any downsides taking CQU over NDU?

I can’t see any major downsides, to be honest.

Upsides:
guaranteed CSP
lower rent
lower HECS
one year less
lifestyle (given your comment re. liking things laid back)

Potential downside:
convenience of coming back to Vic to visit family

I’d imagine you could find work wherever you went. Even location non-specific stuff like online tutoring would be pretty straightforward wherever your base. And both will give you internship prospects in a capital city and won’t affect your career progression hopes down the track.

Congrats!

Thanks for your consideration 😊. The new Bonza airline have 2 flights a week Melbourne direct to Bundaberg at reasonable prices (🤞They keep flying for the next 7 years)

Home state: SA
Offer 1: UQ provisional BMP
Offer 2: JMP UoN CSP
Offer 3: Adelaide BMP
Any scholarships offered: No
Any accommodation secured: Will be able to live at home for UoA, no accommodation elsewhere
Internship location preference:
SA
Other important information:
Heavily leaning towards Adelaide, but interested in discussion on CSP in NSW vs BMP at home. Considering paediatrics in the future, but who knows.

Home state: QLD
Offer 1: CQU
Offer 2: UTAS
Any scholarships offered:
No
Any accommodation secured: no accommodation, need to find for both

What are your thoughts on UCQ (7 years) vs UTAS( 5 years )?

Is there anyone here with UTAS med school experience or thoughts on the programme?

For all the relevant threads: University of Tasmania

For the course overview specifically: UTAS - UTAS Medicine: Overview

ETA: the most important part! I’m a UTAS grad and I bloody loved every minute of it! Most of the info in those threads is mine but if you have a read through and then have more questions, let me know.

The structure is a bit different now as it’s a BMedSci/MD program rather than the MBBS that I did, but most of it is pretty similar.

Home state: NT
Offer 1: Flinders CSP
Offer 2:
UAdl BMP
Any scholarships offered:
No
Any accommodation secured:
Residential College in North Adl
Internship location preference: Adelaide or Brisbane
Other important information: Uadl was my original first preference, but offered CSP for Flinders so not sure. Lots of people seem to prefer Adl but I have heard both are great. I have lived rural my whole life in a RA5 area so I don't think it is crazy to spend another three years rural over 18 years with a BMP, but then again you never know where your life will be in the future. Would appreciate any insight into these courses. Thanks.

Can you use that accom for both Unis? (I’m not very familiar with Adelaide and where the two Unis/various hospitals are)

Assuming so then really the only defining difference between the two is CSP vs BMP. I would say take the CSP as then you can choose to go rural if you want, rather than being forced into it.

HOWEVER… it is very common for UAdel BMPs to be ‘upgraded’ to CSPs so that could still happen for you. I’m usually a huge advocate for people declining surplus offers in a timely manner, but if UAdel is your first preference, I’d say hold onto both for a little while longer and see if there’s any movement on your BMP.

If you don’t get upgraded, I’d go Flinders.

Residential colleges in North Adelaide are nowhere near Flinders and it would be a good 30-60 mins on public transport to Flinders from there. Anecdotally Adelaide is more traditional and Flinders is a lot more laid back, but both should be fine as medical schools.

I'd take the CSP over BMP but would recommend you find accommodation close to Flinders.

Thank you very much. Since UTAS is a 5-year course, does it run for three semesters in a year with summer school like Bond?

Nope. Two semesters with long holidays between first and second year, pretty long between second and third, and getting shorter but still decent between the rest.

Bond is actually 4 years 7 months duration (from memory).

Thank you, thats great.
What ATAR did you achieve to get a UTAS interstate offer? I'm wondering if I might have a chance at a subsequent round 🤔

Yea the accommodation is fine as the train station is nearby, its like 20 mins on the train.

Should I enrol at Adelaide while I wait to see if my BMP is upgraded? Is it possible to be enrolled at 2 unis at once temporarily?

Yes, and yes! Just make sure you unenroll in your surplus order as soon as you can (and definitely before census date when you start to have to pay for things!).

I got an email saying this from Flinders:

" Our records show you have since received an offer to a course listed as a higher preference in your SATAC application and we need to confirm whether you intend to commence study in the above course at Flinders University.
If you wish to remain in the above course at Flinders University, you will need to do the following:
  • Respond to this email confirming this as soon as possible and by no later than 5pm Monday 29 January.
  • Respond to the higher offer in your SATAC application and change your response to confirm you wish to reject it. "

This probably means I wouldn't be able to wait and see if I got upgraded right? Or could I email Flinders to confirm and not change SATAC for the time being? Probably a question I need to call up and ask about lol but no one is going to answer the phone until Monday morning.
