Dentistry Entry Discussion and Questions

Hey! I am planning to get enrolled on a bachelor's degree next year. However, I was wondering which universities in Australia that offers dentistry will allow me to apply straight from my first year of university, instead of completing all 3 years.

Hi everyone,
I complet my first year of the Bachelor of Health Sciences at La Trobe University, and I’m hoping to apply for an internal transfer to the Bachelor of Dental Science (Honours) program.

My current WAM is 79.43, and I was wondering if anyone here has successfully transferred with a similar WAM, or knows what the realistic cut-off tends to be?

Any insights, advice, or experience would be really appreciated!
Thanks in advance 🙏

With 2090 UCAT and ATAR 98.5+ what are my chances for interstate dentistry? particularly looking at latrobe and JCU.
Im NSW, GWS student.

Thankyou

Both schools don’t take UCAT.

La Trobe unlikely without 99.8+ since they take adjustment factors and favour rural entry.

JCU could be possible with a brilliant written application.

nsw here. does 96 atar (nsw eas) and 90 ucat get griffith dent. also does (nsw no eas) 2320 with 98 atar get griffith dent?
In my experience EAS, at QLD is more strict than NSW (they were the only state that declined my application citing that it wasn’t ‘severe’ enough).

However, both scores should get an interview however, the 90% may struggle if there is a large increase in applicants.

Atar wise the 96 may also struggle but with a strong interview both should be fine.

Hello! I’m currently doing my first year of uni in NZ and I'm hoping to get UQ dent. I got a ucat score of 2240 with sjt of 563. If I'm able to maintain a gpa of 6.5+, what are the chances of getting in?? Thank you!!!

For JCU as long as your written application is good you can get in with a 98.5. I’m currently in first year non-rural and had an ATAR of 98

It’s always hard to say especially with the fact you’ll have to do MMIs. All I can say is just try and keep the GPA as high as possible, prepare for the interviews and hopefully if all goes well you’ll get a spot.

sorry in advance this is a very long paragraph, I am a first-year uni healthsci student studying in nz and I wasn't offered a mmi interview because the GPA cut offs this year were significantly high - I got a 8.25GPA only from sem 1, but even more unfrotunate I also did terrible in my UCAT this year got 2050 excluding SJT

and I really can't see myself doing hlthscience for the next two years and then reapplying here but I am kinda confused if I should complete my undergrad here and apply for post grad med or if I should go and do undergrad in aus and apply for postgrad med there - I applied to au last year too but only melbourne but this time I want to apply to a 'good' premed undergrad program (sorry I have heard bad things about biomed at unimelb) in hopes of getting into med at aus. I heard monash has a special scheme for biomed undergrads reserving 70 spots for post grad med? Please let me know if there are other au unis that have these 'special schemes' I am also open to any advice on choosing pathways or if anyone knows any undergrad research programs/ internships I could apply for. Also tbh I wanted to do dentistry initially but we only have one uni out of the two that has a dentistry degree so I wanted to look at dentistry options in au but I am aware there are none that doesn't look at ucat

Hi there are actually two Dental schools that don’t like at UCAT. James Cook University and La Trobe University.

Okkkkk...a lot to unpack here. First, even if the chance is small, i generally still suggest applying. You can try Bond med, jcu dent and la trobe if you're willing to move. Since youre going to have other preferences, just fill them all up w/ bonded, unbonded and other med or dent schools.

Second, if you're happy with med sci, keep applying as an undergrad. Why bother applying only after you finish when you've got a shot as an undergrad?

Third, your undergrad doesn't have to be premed it could be comp sci/ engineering etc as well. I would suggest considering lateral pathways as well as degrees that have job prospects.

Fourth, if your goal is post grad, you're still going to have to do GAMSAT. Don't forget that.

Edit: lateral pathways for dentistry don't require UCAT. That's the oathway I used.

Given you’re a current Uni student, you’re limited to non-standard entry unis prior to having a completed degree and then graduate entry once you’re done.

Put non-standard medicine entry into the search bar to find the related forum threads.

i have a friend who got has a predicted 97 atar and a 2300 ucat, and she's wondering if she'll get into griffith. Does anyone know about their requirements?

Hi all, I have one question about Doctor of Dental Medicine at UQ. Will they count recent 10- year accumulated study GPA? Or just count recent 5 years? Do I have to sit GAMSAT? ( Completed bachelor and postgrad probably 3 years ago (GPA around 6), recently doing another degree just one year right now and GPA is 6.5+). Thank you!!

It is all outlined on their website.

1) does anyone have a non standard dentistry entry table thing that can be viewedc for all the reqs?

2) is it wise to do bachelor of oral health and then to post grad dent or bsci then do dent?

Bottom link of my signature. It's a tad outdated. I'd recommend cross checking the requirements for hte most updated information.
BoOral health is leaps and bounds better than biosci and generally better than bSci. If you do make it in to dent, the year or two, or three of training you had in oral health will go towards you cavity prep and drilling skillage. If you don't, you get a good job with good pay.

Science you generally get, unemployment and dozens of people just as smart as you competing for the highest GPA.

But, the third pathway is trying to transfer into an undergrad program while as an undergrad. Why lull around wasting 3 years waiting for post grad when you can apply in year 1,2 and 3. (if the primary concern if UCAT, there are training guides in my signature. The gamsat is also pretty awful).
