A1 replies: DrLMG said the past few years including last year. I didn't watch last year so not sure. At least it shows USC (and Griffith Nathan) top-ups do occur.

They did NOT occur for 2022 entry. I had a 99.75 and did not get a top up. Rang both USC & Griffith and they confirmed that they do not send out any offers after the first round. There is no evidence of top ups in the last 3 years, which makes complete and utter sense as they would not have lied to me over the phone. I'm assuming 2019 was an anomaly.

Given you did not get an offer from unisc, did you get into med somewhere else?

Yes it is possible for USC.
Also possible for GC/Nathan with a small difference. I have seen GEMSAS rules if you do an accelerated 2yr Bachelor you can only apply *after* you have completed that degree not in the 2nd year. So it'd be 7 years instead of Griffith GC/Nathan 6 years.

These aren’t top ups?
the first one you have there is from the first offer round (13th of jan) & the second one is a NSW applicant who received their ATAR delayed due to COVID & hence did not get their ATAR until after the first round.

A1 adds: Okay, as said I didn't watch last year's offer results so not conversant. Just want to add back in my year 2016-17 there definitely were Nathan top ups for 99.70s while Griffith website published cutoff stayed at 99.75, meaning Griffith/USC top-ups can happen if the circumstance arises.

I didn’t refer to them as top ups, I referred to them as offers made after the initial QTAC round. In fact, I went so far as to say it’s impossible to tell if they were top ups.

Not to mention (probably as a separate topic), unfortunately, we have consistent evidence year in year out of admissions staff inadvertently giving out blatantly incorrect information to people who call them due to the often complex nature of Med (and Dent) admissions. I’m absolutely not saying staff lied to you, or even that this indeed happened to you at all, but I am saying that getting incorrect information, including on dates and offers and rounds and requirements, is unfortunately very common.

I think you’re best contacting the USC medical science course coordinator/equivalent, this is a unique question and I expect it hasn’t been done before.

There would usually be less than 3 students a year, sometimes no students fall under the cutoff.

From my cohort (class of 2024), I don’t know a single domestic student who got <6.0 GPA. The median GPA for domestic students was 6.5, and bonded cutoff ~6.4. Barring any unforeseen incidents, If you keep on track with your work you should have no problem at all with the 5.5 cutoff.

Thanks a lot and could you please provide insights into the distinct vibes and styles between them? Which campus is generally considered more challenging? I would greatly appreciate any information you can share regarding their unique approaches. Thank you very much.

The Nathan campus is typically all domestic students, whereas the Gold Coast campus typically has a lot more international students. Since the international students don’t have to compete for unbonded spots, the Gold Coast cohort environment does typically have a more relaxed and less competitive vibe. The Nathan campus is currently undergoing a lot of renovations which means the campus is like one big construction zone. The campus is located in the middle of a rainforest too which makes it hard to walk to nearby locations. Gold Coast campus is located in the middle of Southport, walking distance from heaps of great places. Better location and vibes imo, I do very much suggest preferring there. Hope that helps!

Thank you for your prompt responses. I am interstate. Would it be better to study at GC? At least I would see friends or classmates at the dormitory. At Nathan, I may have mental health issues because I have no friends and do not see others frequently due to the limited number of compulsory classes. Once we get accepted, would it be possible to join a group chat with seniors like you?

I do def suggest studying at GC, especially considering you’d have to move there for the MD after 2 years anyway. I would recommend staying anywhere Except the GC village. Everyone I know moved out of there at the first chance they got. Full of loud parties and scamming managers haha. Many students, including myself, stay at Smith Collective. Could not be more convenient of a location. Bit expensive but you certainly get what you pay for.
There should be a group chat formed with the rest of your cohort soon, definitely try to engage early and form a good friend group. Having that support network within the cohort makes all the difference. I’m not sure of any group chats with MD and MedSci students, but if you have any queries you can message me at any time!
