[Undergrad] High School Discussion Thread

Failed all my interviews =P (presumably. Either that or they didn't take my academics). Or maybe I'll get something 6th. If not then I'm going UQ provisional.

And yea thats the big hard topic. Kidneys defy logic. But everything else is fairly straightforward. A lot of it you already know from Chem Organics.

Ahh , interviews is what i believe the hardest as well. Have UQ provisional accepted you? That is very nice also, I know people doing provisional at UQ taking art now i think. Goodluck on 6th.

And yes, the kidney goodness is such a complicated part. I'm now up to applications of biology, gene technology, I guess i can finish the A2 bio course in 2 days aka yesterday and today, just idk how in depth I am at though. Probably gona do some past papers on Sunday (tomorrow) and see how it goes.

Considering I DIDN'T even get over 90 in As bio last year I might end up failing this May June A2 bio exam, can't do anything about it except working hard now I guess.

Always good to have more NZers in Australia :) It's strange that most of the NZ people I've met on MSO did CIE.
Or maybe us CIE people are just more clueless and have to ask a lot of questions :D

Hey Boom, im new to this site nd i just saw your post :)

I had the same problem as you a couple of years ago. My advice to you is that if you really want to make it into a Aus medical school, you must get a 98+ grade in AL Chemistry and Physics. This is cuz a friend mine scored 97% in a level chemistry and something like that in a level Physics and didntmake it into any aussie medical school.
So i think you should aim for those scores, and if you dont have those, you should maybe resit before applying.

happy to help :)

Mind you Trin got into Queensland, a very prestigous school with 90 chem (100 in physcis though) so I believe you need to research more and don't use individual failures as a indicator. Further more, even if he had 97% in chemistry and physics, he may have did bad in his other A levels, or he simply don't have enough of the required a levels.

Mind you I can tell you that if you include all the medical students in Australia, under 5% of them will have a score over 97% in a levels. Top in the world chesmitry was 97% last year. So what are you trying to say, if you don't get top in the world you don't get in?

Boom, let's not be mean to AusMedRules :) He was just trying to help! What you said is correct though, you definitely do NOT need 98+ in any A levels to get entry into ANY med school in Australia.

I say this because... One of my friends last year got into Adelaide with 8x% in Biology and with good scores in Chem and Maths but not 98%+ for sure though. And come to think of it, none of my other friends who got into medicine or dentistry achieved anywhere near 98%+ in AL Chemistry/Physics/Biology lol. Like Boom said, my Chemistry was pretty low, and my Biology score was in the low 90s as well. But I can assure you I received offers from more than one medical school.

As for the new entrants this year from my school, I don't think any of them got 98%+ for Chem and Physics either because 98% basically means top in the world and is obviously extremely difficult to achieve.

AusMedRules, I know your intentions are good, but your advice is based on anecdotal evidence and may not hold true for everyone.

But you are right though, we should all aim for 100% :D :D :D

I apologize for any unintentional scorn I inflicted AusMedRules. I was just a bit frustrated by I guess the workload at school now sorry for that, partially also because I am trying to persuade and confirm to myself that i don't need 98% to get into medicine, cause there is no way I can get that and therefore expressing in extreme.

As for this, it is because you got an amazing UMAT result lol and of course 100 in a level physics.

Further more, Trin I apologize for posting your results without your permission. I will remove it should you wish me to, just give me a notice or post here and I will remove it. Sorry for that

No problem mate, it's not exactly something that's private anyway :D

Hey guys, so what conclusion have you guys come up with~? With regards to the conversion? I'm just curious what my CIE results convert into lol

Apparently it differs from school to school.
My converted ATAR got me into a USyd course (something to do with law conjoint) that required a 99.75 ATAR.
Then UNSW told me my results were like 95 or something lol.

I further heard that UAC now no longer converts CIE to ATAR. They say they send your CIE score there and each uni will have their own entry rank table or something near those lines. So I am not too worried about it now. I think the only thing we can do now is to boost our grades as high as possible.

That would make sense, considering each school gave me a different score!

Totally, I chuck my school notes in the bin straight away after lessons everyday. What it comes down to is repeating past papers again and again. That is what I did for my attained a grades

I was under the impression that %ile's don't count, and that most unis just look at your grades (A*, A, etc).

UAC was definitely ehhhhh in that they did not inform us clearly that they convert only the grades from the previous year + 1 from the year before (Like Chsal said. Omg we're all on this thread haha). That meant that even though we had 4A*s, we only had 2A*s processed and that resulted in a ridiculously low ATAR.

However, the only exception is USyd, but you have to call them up and tell them to include the previous results in the conversions. UNSW, UWS, etc follow whatever UAC does for them =/

VTAC does /not/ convert ATAR.

SATAC, I think, does, and their conversions are more standardised? I think I saw somewhere that AAAA, etc, will get you 99.95 BUT this may be outdated information. I did get an offer from Flinders so I reckon 4A*s didn't convert badly?

@Chsal , I think it is possible to get 99.95, because doesn't 5A*s equate to that at Usyd? In the very least, 'panda' got into a course with a minimum of 99.7 ATAR with A*A*AA if my memory serves me correct.

First of all thanks for the reply

if I send the CIE Grade certificate to the uni? Cause it will be hard to take the hard copy to unis all over Australia.

Like Chsal said, make certified copies (as in, you photocopy, then have the principal/admin office to certify that it is a true copy, with the stamp+signature and all), then post them to the different admission centres. DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT send or give them the actual thing.

What do you mean by only 2 A* considered our of 4 and resulted in a low ATAR? Does that mean they only considered your attained A* (previous years, year 12 etc?) or your predicted ones (most recent i.e year13)?

Meaning Chsal and I both attained 4A*s before main round offers, however 3 were sat a year in advance (i.e. during 2011), and the 4th in 2012 (midyear). UAC (with the exception of USyd) only accept results from the previous year+ 1 from the year before that, hence only 2A*s were processed for us (the midyear one from 2012, one from 2011).

Putting this your context, UAC will only accept A-level results from 2013, and then one subject from 2012.

Results sat at the end of year 13 do not come out in time for main round offers, however, will be eligible for the later rounds.
The universities and admission centres do not take in consideration of any 'predicted results'.

Is that really the case? Then that bascially means its imposible for us to get into med uni in australia?

Not impossible, but very difficult. This is why you see very few NZers in UNSW. In fact, I haven't heard of any NZer getting in as a school leaver. There probably are people who made it in though.

Because this restriction, many of us NZers turn to other unis such as UQ/Adel/Monash, since QTAC/VTAC/SATAC take into account all of your results, regardless of when.

As for predicted results, I know UNSW does use it for interview offer purposes. You will need to pester your principal/deputy principal to send them to UNSW for you though.

Wow trin you pretty much just made my day. So the above is only set to UNSW. QTAC, VTAC, SATAC takes in all the results then I'll just ignore applying via the UNSW then. Thanks alot for the info.
