[Undergrad] High School Discussion Thread

WSU is low 90s ATAR. I think GWS (please don’t quote me on this), gives you 5 bonus points for your ATAR for WSU specifically. Of course, try and claim as many bonus points as you can from EAS, as it will surely boost your mark.

Just give this year your best shot and aim HIGH; you WILL surprise yourself if you try hard enough. I got a 98+ ATAR last year whilst struggling with severe anxiety and trauma that left me unable to study 70% of the time and didn’t even think I’d get 90+. But with the small ounce of motivation and time I had left, I just pushed through and did my best. You CAN do this!
wow! what subjects did you do if you dont mind me asking. i suddenly started getting really bad results out of no wherethis term even tho i tried so hard so my motivation this term has not existed

i feel like the biggest disappointed aswell, during exams recently i started to just go blank and my hands would tense up really bad like i have panic attacks idk why. i also had to work for the entire of my year 11 so i feel like ive destroyed my entire life, but i had to work to support my family. i also spent most of 2018 visiting my brother in a psych ward which really impacted my mental health and i feel like all i do is cry now cos idk how to control my emotions. idk what happened to me i went from being top 10% (school ranks top 80-100) to the bottom. i try my extreme best but i still see those that are priveleged (rich or whatever with good tutors) rising to the top without trying whilst im here plummeting to the bottom. i know i have the potnetial but i feel so excluded

The “Asian combo”. Haha. Maths Ext 2, Maths Ext 1, Physics, Chem, Eng Adv and Software (Accelerated done in 2019). I was lucky to have Software done in 2019 so I didn’t put too much focus in Chem for HSC, which did help lift the stress as I had an internal mental battle all year round.

Further, I think JMP just uses the ATAR to gatekeep/hurdle. (94.30 is needed for entry which can be supplemented with EAS if you had high 80s in your case). They don’t use the ATAR in the final offer (from what I’ve seen here on MSO), so you won’t need to worry too much about it. However a good UCAT is needed to score an interview. So keep that in mind, too.

Also, just remember to keep this thread on topic. Whilst I can discuss subjects and the lot, this thread is about non standard Med entry. So if you still have concerns about EAS or ATAR needed, still talk here about it 🙂.

Hi, I'm not sure if i'm putting this in the right place but i thought i have to put in my year 11 subject selections soon.
Plans:
3/4 Geography
3/4 Further maths
1/2 Specialist maths
1/2 Chemistry
1/2 English language
1/2 Physics OR Bio

Please note I am doing 1/2 methods in year 10 (this year) so that's why i'm not doing it next year.

I'm really not sure whether to do physics or biology. I did better on the physics test (99%) than the bio (89%). And I think I enjoy physics more. But in the end I want to do what is going to help me get into undergraduate medicine or biomedicine. Any advice would be appreciated!

Thanks!

Do physics. Bio's not a prereq so you will be taught it at uni. 99% on a physics test is pretty fantastic so do that instead.

Hi Tabyy.

Hope you make it too🙏. I am thinking of physio if I don't make it. My subjects are specialist maths. Maths methods , chem, physics and English. Wish I switched bio to something else as it brought my score down. 🥲
Hello,

I don't mean to be rude, but may I ask what the individual scores out of 100 you had for each of your subjects? I am in Year 12 next year and was wondering what scores were needed to get an atar of 99.65.

Hey everyone, Im currently in grade 10 and have my heart and head set on getting into medicine as an undergraduate. Any advice and suggestions?

Hi!!

First off, realise that medicine is a tough journey. It’s not going to be easy to get in, in fact, getting into medicine is the minority, not the majority. Many people take many years to get into medicine, and Undergraduate isn’t the only pathway. Granted, it’s slightly harder/easier to get in depending on which state you come from.

Since you are set on getting in, you should be aiming for high marks. The general ATAR goal is 99+, but you should in reality be aiming for 99.50+ to be eligible for a lot of unis. Medicine is insanely competitive, so you want to get as high as you can get!

The UCAT ANZ is another hurdle you have to manage. It’s a computer based exam used for many unis (not all unis use it for entry though). The minimum percentile is usually 90th, but to be safe, a 95th percentile is usually considered the most optimal.

Don’t forget that since you are in Year 10, there’s no harm in getting in some clinical experiences or getting involved in extracurricular events. These help out with the interview, and the JCU Medicine written application. Obviously, if you can’t get these experiences, don’t have time for them, or you would be doing them solely for the process of getting into medicine then don’t do them.

Hope this helps! :)

Honestly, ill go anywhere I can get in and from my research I think that would be JCU. I am however from the Gold Coast and Griffith would be my #1 choice. Would anyone be able to explain the process of getting a reasonable adjustment because I struggle with a few mental and physical illness'.

Griffith Uni Med requires a raw ATAR of like 99.80+, and no adjustment factors are considered.

I don't think JCU takes into account adjustment factors either.

Any advice and suggestions?
Is there anything specific to your advice or suggestion you would like? There are a million and a half things to consider leaving it open kinda makes it hard to help you.

Sorry I should.d have clarified. Any more information on EAS/adjustments for struggling with mental illness and/or doing some of their schooling from hospital. I haven't been able to find any discussions on it.

do yo think its ridiculous for me to start preparing for the UCAT? haha

No, I think it’s okay to start now. Just don’t go too overboard to the point of jeopardising your Year 11 subjects since they are the core foundation of your Year 12 subjects.

The UCAT is essential for your med journey and there’s no harm in preparing a bit earlier.
