Non-standard Medicine Entry

Interestingly these 5 schools all do differently so I will list one by one.

- With less than 1 FTE (8 subjects) JMP will use your ATAR which meets the 94.3 hurdle
- Bond will also use your ATAR, not a hurdle but 98.65 should get an invite for the psychometric test
- WSU uses best of ATAR or GPA, since your ATAR meets the 95.5 hurdle it doesn't matter what GPA or which one is used

- UNSW uses best of but as a competitive score, not a hurdle. GPA of less than 1 FTE is useless so your ATAR is best, but is too low unless you had EAS. To have any UNSW chance you need to complete 8 subjects with 6.5+ GPA.

- JCU uses your ATAR if you've done total *less than* 1 semester (4 subjects), otherwise same as UNSW.
Hi A1!

I'm in a similar position to 'Kman'. I'm currently studying B.Engineering having previously done a year of Physio, except differing from 'Kman', I graduated in 2020 with a 89 ATAR. Similarly, I am looking at sitting the UCAT this year round and receiving a similar score within the 95%ile.

I also plan on completing first year of Engineering and doing 8 units this year. But given my low ATAR, are you aware of any places that disqualify me from applying, or rather significantly disadvantage me from applying?

I tried reading into the fine print of the uni's, but found that to be quite the rabbit hole - hence me asking here 😄

UNSW will effectively ‘disqualify’ you from non-standard entry on the basis of your past ATAR, but you’ll be fair game for JCU, JMP, and JPM, assuming you meet the GPA hurdle of the latter two.

Cheers for the reply!

Quick question - what and where is JMP vs JPM - tad confused?

They are both well established non-standard Med entry options. If those terms aren’t familiar to you, then I suggest you do a lot more looking around the site and googling in general as it’s all readily available and very widely covered. Including in this thread. It’s what I would consider part of the basics of non-standard entry.

Hello all, just a quick question.
Does UNSW calculate GPA from all your tertiary studies or the most recent? (i.e. only from an honours degree)?

Hey, I'm a little confused here. On the chart you made on selection criteria, it sounds like both ATAR and GPA add up to an equivalent rank. Did I misunderstand something, thinking they both weigh up to something (like an average, or a ratioed split e.g. 3:2)? Or is it 'the better out of the two', but you need to clear the hurdles of 96 ATAR and 70 WAM?

Better of the two once you've cleared the hurdles.

Better of the two once you've cleared the hurdles.
So I've definitely cleared the ATAR equivalent (albeit not amazingly), but say I keep up a good WAM and land my GPA on the higher end of 6.0-7.0. Assuming my UCAT score I get this year is competitive, would there be any problem with my school grades in getting an interview at UNSW?

As long as they're above the hurdle AND you don't rely on them for competitiveness due to the fact that it's your GPA that is competitive, then no. No issue.

Hi all, I’m a registrar currently and have been out of the med admissions process for a very very long time. Was a long term member of MSO years ago when there was a hatbox etc.

I’m now in the process of assisting my wife to get in to med school. She’s 29, completed a completely separate degree. Just thought I’d say hi and nice to see old faces.

There's still a hatbox, btw!! But you need a few forum posts to be able to access it. You should definitely join us once you can!

Hi guys, I was having a look at the 2022 collated data for offers and had some questions. First, unlike previous years, there was no GPA offer for JCU med. Only offers with ATARs. Does this mean there were no postgraduates accepted or no postgraduates gave their scores out?

Also, in previous years Griffith dentistry had people getting in with GPA only. In 2022, there were offers with GPA and UCAT combined. Does this mean Griffith dentistry is no longer looking at GPA only as of last year?

Thanks in advance

Our data collection samples typically land somewhere around 5-10% of the total, and because non-standard numbers jump around a lot at JCU it’s not uncommon for us to get very few reports. That said, to get none is quite unusual. Unsure how representative it is though and it’s highly likely there were some, just none that reported back here.

And yes, UCAT is now required.

Hey, at least 3 people on MSO received an offer but didn’t report it publicly.

Hi, I was just wondering do all the universities that take non-standard entry look at either ATAR or GPA whichever is better? Or do any unis look at GPA only?

JCU JMP : GPA only if you've done 0.5+FTE (JCU) , 1+FTE (JMP) by end of year. Otherwise it's ATAR.
WSU & UNSW : Best of if you've done 0.5+FTE (WSU) , 0.75+FTE (UNSW). Otherwise it's ATAR.

Not sure if this is the right thread but I am planning to sit the UCAT as a mature age student.

I have sat the previous UMAT and GAMSAT assessments prior.

My question is I last obtained an ATAR or TER back in 2003, can I use that ATAR/TER as my mark for entry? I would like to avoid my GPA marks as I think it wouldn't be competitive enough.

I feel my chances are better relying upon the UCAT more.

Since you have completed a degree your TER/ATAR can no longer be used for any of the med schools.

If your GPA is 4.3+ you can be competitive for JMP, 5.5+ for WSU. Both these are hurdles you don't need it higher for better chances, it's all on UCAT to get an interview. Good luck.
