Non-standard Medicine Entry

Hi, I will be studying my first year of dental health science and Griffith Uni this year and was wondering if I am still able to sit the UCAT this year so I can apply for UNSW, JPM and JMP medicine just in case dentistry is not for me. I heard from a friend that dentistry at the university of Adelaide doesn’t have a GPA so they can’t apply for medicine.
Yes, any med schools accepting non-standard applicants you can apply to

Hi all, posting this here for some advice/opinions. I just graduated year 12 in VIC with 99.6 atar and 94% (3090) ucat non-rural and no special considerations, but shot myself in the foot multiple times with mistakes in the uni application process that has left me with no med interviews for 2021.

Right now im considering starting my bachelor of commerce/engineering package from uni Melb and reapplying as non-standard next year to UNSW, WSU, JMP, JCU and Bond (as I understand, UTAS and Curtin won't be available to me). This way I can begin working through my bachelor to apply for uni Melb MD with the 99 atar reserved interview spot in case I can't get in undergrad med. So I have a few questions:

1. I believe applying instead as school leaver next year would mean extra interview chances at UAdel and Monash, while WA unis may be a bit of a stretch. In your opinion, are the 2 extra interview places + risk of not even getting them if I screw the UCAT next year worth taking a gap year for? With an 890 VR this year I think there's a good chance I can get offers at WSU and Bond as a non-standard at least and possibly JCU with a good written app, so it would be ~4 interviews vs 2-3.

2. Is Bond's 50/50 atar gpa calculation something I should worry about ruining my chances? I am interested in commerce/economics so I see myself enjoying the course but dont know how a 99+ atar compares to gpa.

3. Am I correct in assuming all students only get 1 interview per state except QLD where they can try Bond + any 1 of the other QLD unis due to the dates that offers are sent out? As being able to have more interviews would make the gap year significantly more appealing.

I already made the mistake of thinking I understood the application process once so any advice/corrections would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

In all states you receive an interview at all universities you qualify for however you may only receive one OFFER per state

Oh so to confirm, it is possible for someone to be invited to interview at say USC, UQ and JCU but only receive 1 offer from QTAC for their highest preference uni even if they passed all 3 interviews?

Well, there's no interview for USC. However, other than that, that is correct.

Hi guys just curious, I am not sure if anyone will know the answer. If you deferred your med offer at one uni, can you sit ucat and try again that next year for a different uni?
Thanks

Excluding UQ, which won’t accept applications from gap year students.

Based on this year's data, I would say UNSW definitely needs a higher combo than those numbers. Interstate from QLD would probably need a 7 GPA and 97 UCAT minimum to get an interview there. I was rejected with a 6.875 GPA and borderline 95/96 UCAT (3090) this year. Unless op has applied for any special considerations it is very rough competition.
That is so rough! Is JMP easier or do you think the added PQA (Personal Qualities Assessment) makes it about the same chances?

hmmm I wouldn't say JMP is easier per se, they just have a different set of criteria. I think UNSW definitely prioritises higher marks whereas the JMP prioritises interview performance. JMP sends out way more interview invites but the offer to interview ratio is much lower than UNSW's. Having high marks at JMP won't give you an advantage due to the hurdle requirements but it will at UNSW. So, I would say it's almost like comparing apples and oranges ;)

So did you not even get an interview with those scores!? Last year's median UNSW UCAT was a 95%ile

Hello I am a student enrolled in medical imaging at Uni SA (I'm an SA resident)

After 2 not so successful attempts in UCAT I am currently in a place of whether I should give another go at non-standard entry or completely take my hands off from UCAT and work for GAMSAT instead. As a little side note I received an ATAR of 97.

As a student who doesn't meet the chemistry prerequisite (both in high school and university), from my knowledge the med/dent schools that I can apply to includes:
- UNSW
- WSU (has a higher weighting on VR)
- JMP
- JPM
- Bond
- Griffith dent
- Adelaide dent
- La trobe dent (not too sure)

I would like to know if...
1. Non standard entry applicants are placed in the same pool as school leavers
2. I've checked the 2022 med/dent offers thread and noticed that most offers for UNSW are given to standard applicants - does UNSW favour(?) school leavers over non standard?
3. From the offers thread I've also noticed that most offers for JPM is given to GWS applicants - what are the chances of an SA applicant receiving an offer?
4. Do any universities listed above have something like an in-state sub quota

Not *so* experienced at this myself, but I'll give a go at answering these:

1. Essentially, yes. For many unis, you are grouped with school leavers, especially moreso with WSU and JMP as they only use UCAT for interview selection, anyway. UNSW I still groups you with school leavers (taking the BEST OF ATAR and GPA), but I have a suspicion that they are still aware that you're a non-standard (which seems to explain why 95-96+ UCAT was needed for non-standards, and 90+ UCAT was needed for school leavers).

2. There are a couple of factors that could explain this:
- (Assumedly) a lot of Non-standards ultimately were unable to meet the 96 ATAR threshold for UNSW would not be eligible for an interview. (Hence, more non-standards entering via WSU and JMP).
- I did a UNSW interview, but didn't get an offer. I did query on them back and said they only interviewed 400 local applicants. This is opposed to the usual 500 local applicants that were for 2022 entry. I think this likely happened because of the NSW ATAR delay, and UNSW would not have enough time to interview as many applicants before the course commences.
- !!TINFOIL HAT!! Because of COVID-19's impact on HSC and ATAR, UNSW might have been more compassionate to school leavers, and needed to sacrifice a lot of Non-standards for interview invites given the 400 local interview spots they could only take.

3. Very unlikely, unfortunately. Many people with raw 98's and 99's UCATs did not receive an interview interstate from WSU. However, this can change definitely depending on VR performance.

4. UNSW and JMP, I don't think have in-state quotas. WSU has GWS quota, and I'm unsure about Dent unis but Bond I don't think has any quotas.

For reference, I think it's also worth noting that things can change again this year, (I think it does almost every year, lol). UNSW might invite more applicants this time, and hence more can be interviewed. Just try your best an apply. But I think for Med, your best bets would be UNSW, JMP and Bond (if you're willing to pay up). In fact, for 2021 entry, more interviewees were selected than normal (but I think that was a technical error, so don't place too much hope in that). That being said, a Non-standard with a 87%ile UCAT and 7 GPA at the time landed a BMP first round offer. You never know.

Hey, I just came across this post and thought it would be a good idea to shed some light on unsw lateral entry. As a student currently enrolled in the program, I would say your marks are definitely competive to get an interview! Feel free to ask me any more question
hi !! im a current year 12 student and i was wondering if going into medsci for lateral entry into medicine is worth it. im aiming for unsw med but i just want to have a back up just in case. i am slightly interested in med sci but I heard that only a small cohort of medsci students get offered a position into unsw med as well.

no. not even worth it.

edit: from what Ive heard, getting in via lateral entry is harder than normal domestic entry.
