Non-standard Medicine Entry

Hi guys, are there any approximate figures on the competitive GPA and UCAT needed for non-standard entry students for UNSW. Also, is it true that the JMP with WSU only uses GPA as a hurdle, and that they focus on the VR section of the UCAT more?

UNSW : 6.5-6.75+ but exact conversion figures are unknown
UCAT : 95 +

Yes JMP/JPM only use GPA as a hurdle, the exact formula for WSU is unknown but VR is weighted highly but your state of residence is also very important due to quotas

Thanks for the info! I am applying from Queensland next year - do you think this will greatly decrease my chances in the NSW unit (especially WSU/ JMP) because they would rather take people from NSW?

Yes quite a bit for JPM only not for JMP unless they introduce a quota, there is a 80% quota for NSW residents at JPM hence why there is a lower chance. If your a rural student though the chances could be a bit better in terms of the score required

So even if I get lets say a GPA of 6.75 and a UCAT of 97+ ..I'll maybe even have a chance for an interview?

For JPM ? It depends on your subject scores particularly VR, you would absolutely have a chance as the competitiveness really depends on the cohort and a lot can change in a year. For the others you would get an interview

I would highly recommend checking the JMP and WSU website as both have published information regarding their GPA requirements. There is also thread on here with UCAT scores of those who have been offered interviews 2022 Entry Interview Invites DATA COLLECTION

Also unrelated to your initial question, but both Bond and JCU don't take use UCAT in case you were wanting info regarding QLD med schools :)

I applied for JCU last year in high school and didn't get in sadly, but I haven't given up yet!

Also, I thought Bond you can only transfer if you are doing study at their Uni?

Nope! As far as I'm aware anyone can apply to Bond (obviously, there is the financial aspect of it though).

Edit: I double checked and Bond allows both undergraduate and graduate applicants to apply to their medical program

With UTAS now using GAMSAT for non standards (not doing med res) do you know if they will be going towards having only non standards (grad entry) course the year after? I can’t find that much information. Thanks 😊

Yes, this is definitely the rumour, that UTAS will move to a grad entry MD (probably with a provisional aspect a la UQ, UWA, etc). But there’s no timeline in this that I’ve come across.

Based on this year's data, I would say UNSW definitely needs a higher combo than those numbers. Interstate from QLD would probably need a 7 GPA and 97 UCAT minimum to get an interview there. I was rejected with a 6.875 GPA and borderline 95/96 UCAT (3090) this year. Unless op has applied for any special considerations it is very rough competition.
 
Hi, I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask but I just graduated from year 12 and my backup plan, if I don't get into med this year, is to start another undergrad degree (something that I'd be happy to pursue as a career if med never works out) and re-apply next year. I was wondering for unis that take non-standards, do they look at our GPA from just the first semester? If not, can someone explain how it all works pls?

Assuming you do two full time semesters in year 1 (which is the best way to maximise your GPA conversion), they will use your full year GPA. WSU will use the best out of this GPA and your ATAR, as will UNSW. Bond use a combo of both. JMP will use GPA, as will JCU, I believe.
 
If I'm going to study at UNSW (they have trimesters), how will it work? Will I still be able to apply next year? Also do all non-standards apply to UAC/QTAC etc at the end of the year? (because year 12s have to submit their med applications by September)
