Otago Halls of Residence

Hey all...now that applications have opened I can't put off choosing anymore so seeking some advice.

Right now I'm thinking my choices will be:
1. St Margaret's
2. Hayward
3. ???

I'm not sure about the 3rd choice, I like the sound of Aquinas but don't want to be so far from the university (so that rules out Salmond as well). That leaves Toroa, Cumberland/Court, Unicol and City College. I'd prefer a more quiet hall, so what should I put? City college maybe?
Also, is it likely Hayward will fill up on first rounds since I hear it's becoming more popular?
Thanks!

Hey, I've decided to pick:
1. st.margs
2. te rangi hiroa
3. aquinas

Are these good picks for the respective 1st, 2nd and 3rd choices? My grades are pretty solid, def top 10 if not top 5 in my school and I do quite a bit of community service, got involved with music and do some social sports as well. what are my chances?

Why not Te Rangi Hiroa? I mean I haven't been there either so I can't say I know it, but the others said it was quiet so... I mean it's just a suggestion off the top of my head.

Sounds like you SHOULD get into St Mags with the grades and involvements you have.
Though if you're into social sport and community service, then St Mags isn't really that suitable. They really keep to themselves there and don't really participate in the College's sports competitions and events. Do you want a College with a better life balance?

Oh yeah, that's the new one, isn't it? I just took my list from a previous page on this thread so maybe it wasn't around then. Did anyone go to Te Rangi Hiroa last year? How was it?

I am doing Health Science next year.

I put Te Rangi Hiroa as a first choice as have 3 others from my school also doing Health Science. Would like to hear any feedback from previous students too.

Hi all,

I have decided upon..
1) St Margs
2)Te Rangi Hiroa
3)Aquinas

Im still a little unsure on my top pick as I hear St Margs is more of a health sci top pick whereas I'm llb/ba (This thread is very useful hence why I joined ) So I'm still thinking Carrington? I want a balanced lifestyle and not become a total recluse, however academics and getting good tutoring is important to me! Grades wise I'm pretty average in the middle, nothing really stands out however co-curiccular wise I do Duke Of Edinburgh, am leader of Polynesian Club, volunteer externally as well. Thoughts and opinions on my chances and the halls for the lifestyle I want? Thanks!

If you want to have a more balanced life, most definitely choose Carrington, I'm here this year and from what I heard from St Margs. students (or from what I didn't hear) it is relatively unbalanced.. There are plenty of law students at Carrington, and they run tutoring for it weekly so that would be no problem. The standard of tutoring would not differ majorly.

Any St Margs students out there to testify to the unbalanced lifestyle? And by unbalanced do you mean they are introverted and focus upon solely academics?

Oh the irony, I think you'll find they are too busy studying for HUBS :lols:

Carrington college. Nice and academic, but good balance - suited me just fine.

How were your academic scores before you applied? My main concern is the fact that my scores are average, hence why I'm unsure if such an academically focused college is right for me?

I had straight excellences. But I can tell you that definitely isn't the standard, there are plenty of people with merits. I'm not sure about your situation, but your wise in considering the different halls because you want to apply strategically.

Unless things have change drastically, as long as you got level 2 endorsed overall with excellennce (and your self and teacher recommendations weren't f---ed up) then you're pretty much guarantee entrance into any hall.

Im doing CIE and I'm unsure of what excellences and merits equates to in CIE form as we just have A, B, C etc. I personally recjeved both A's and B's so I'm unsure if my academic scores will fit in with colleges such as St Margs or Carrington as I am definitely not a straight A* student :/

That sounds fine. If you have some extracurricular activities to go along with that then you'd be a good fit.

Yes I have quite a few extracurricular activities which I will be sure to include. Thank you so much for your advice I really appreciate it! ^_^

Hi everyone,

What do you guys think of my preferences? I put down 1. Te Rangi Hiroa 2. Salmond 3. Aquinas. And also does anyone know when do we get the offers? I've heard we get offers in October. Is that true?

Thanks :)

Hi Coucla,
Yes, offers will come out in the first week of October.
As for your picks, it all depends what you want in a College - what sort of a person are you, do you have any extra-curricular involvements, what's the most important thing about a College for you?
