Otago Halls of Residence

What sort of things do I write when they ask me to "Tell us about yourself."? This is for Auckland btw. Please help me, I don't really know what to write. They have a 250 word space limit I think.

Hi,

We have a dedicated thread for the University of Auckland. I am going to relocate the post to the appropriate thread.

I
Hey guys, I'm a year 13 planning on going down next year and the hall I liked the most when I was there for open day was Carrington. However, I was wondering whether I would be able to get in as it's a first choice hall with a high number of high caliber applicants. I have level 2 excellence, level 3 merit (while in year 12, will be excellence endorsed at the end of this year), did debating until year 12, played 3rd XI hockey for school (currently captain), senior B tennis and senior B table tennis. I've got a couple of High Distinctions under my belt and have been shortlisted for a few writing competitions. Furthermore, I've been volunteering at the children's programme every sunday at a church for a couple of years and have completed the Duke of Edinburgh Silver Award.

The question is, is this good enough to get into Carrington as from what I've heard, hundreds of people with 100+ excellence credits at level 2 apply(and I only have 60ish). Do I need to make any revisions before submitting Carrington -> Hayward -> Studholme?
I think that's plenty good enough to get into Carrington haha

Welcome! Yeah, that should be enough. :)

What people do not know is that if you decline your offered hall if it is not your first choice and decide to be waitlisted you will almost be guaranteed a place in that hall. There are quite a few number of people at carrington this year who only decided to apply in january this year and are in carrington which is considered a highly competitive hall. This is due to beds need to be occupied and people decline in the first round of offers :)

If you have the opportunity, you should come down during orientation week and have a tour of each of the halls :)
I think that in terms of atmosphere, Carrington would be the most study orientated which a huge proportion of their students doing health sci and Cumberland probably the least. However at Cumberland they put you on a floor with students studying the same thing as you, so I think it would vary largely by what floor you are on... I was at Knox this year - it is privately owned by the Presbyterian Church and our Master is a minister of the church, but it isn't really religious apart from in a traditional sense. There is a Chapel you can attend on Sunday if you wish. I wrote that I was an atheist on my application and they still accepted me so don't have to be Christian or anything lol. Knox is really cool, has a good extracurricular and drinking culture but still is academically focused. There is definitely a sense of community. It is quite different to the other halls with second year students and many traditions. You should definitely come and suss them out for yourself :)

Carrington is a hall that will only accept you if it is your first choice (they will stress that when you go to look at it). Knox you can probably get away with as a second choice. And I think Cumberland is quite often used as a backup second/third choice.
While Carrington is a highly academic hall, I do not think we are the most studious. That title would defintiely go to St Margs, and the only reason why we are probably known for that is because in recent years we have the highest proportion (by far) of students getting into med. Yes we are probably on the tamer side of partying, but it still gets quite rowdy in the weekend, especially since we are allowed spirits ;P

Hey all,

This is going to sound super weird, but yes I have massive bathroom anxiety and was just wondering what the bathroom facilities are like in St Margs, Selwyn, City College and Studholme?

Any help would be much appreciated xx

Te Rangi Hiroa has ensuite bathrooms. All other halls as far as I'm aware have shared bathrooms

Hmm... I was aware that Te Rangi did have ensuites, but do other colleges have adequate bathroom facilities? Meaning that tons of people aren't allocated to each?

Hm I have no idea about that, sorry. If I had to take a guess, I'd probably say that like 10-20 people use like 4-5 bathrooms. I dunno haha. Someone more informed will answer you soon!

Not weird at all. What do you mean bathroom anxiety?

Anxiety just in the sense that I really don't like sharing bathrooms, but am willing to make some concessions if there is a reasonable person to bathroom ratio :)
I'm not sure about every hall, but mine had about 15 or so people per bathroom, each bathroom having three shower and toilets.

Man, I remember going through the same processes when applying last year... I'm at Carrington at the moment, and seriously, we aren't packed to the rim with high achievers. There are some insanely intelligence people here which you'll hear about, but they are definitely a minority. You'll be fine with your current accolades - they tend to pick a balanced mix of people.

Standard is around 5 people per toilet + shower at Carrington, dependant on what house you're staying in. Speaking for my house, there has always been 1 available at almost all times of the day, and people do make an effort to keep them clean + they get cleaned every weekday (I think).

EDIT: Btw, if anyone has any specific questions about Carrington or in general, hit me up - was in the same position as you last year so more than happy to help

I'm at City col haha but I'm pretty sure no-one is interested in applying here. It's pretty decent, the best thing about it is that it's right next to Fatty Lane haha. We have 2 bathrooms (each with shower/toilet) for each 5/6 bedroom apartment
