Otago Halls of Residence

Hi super worried I was put on the general waiting list for Otago accomodations I really don’t mind which house I get into what are the chances of me getting an offer if I applied late I’d there Any one who was previously on the waiting list and recieved an offer?

Yep! I wasn't sure which uni I'd go to until about this time last year and was on the general waitlist and got an offer from Te Rangi, which was apparently pretty uncommon! There are, I'm sure, plenty of people who may still be deciding which uni to go to and may opt out of Dunedin, so there's still a chance!

People pull out all the time from halls for many reasons so I'm sure there'll be an opportunity for a spot to open up on the waiting list for you!

If there's a hall that you really want to go into, I'd highly recommend calling the hall personally and speaking to someone, I know that's definitely helped other people in the past, or maybe just calling any halls you're interested in :)

I guess in a way it's hard not to, but I'd say stuff along the lines of how you really wanted to be in their hall and why, but also explain your circumstances i.e. you didn't apply at the time along with everyone else because plans changed recently and now you're going Otago, something like that

Thank you for the help!! Just got an offer to Knox thank you so much for taking the time out to reply !!!

Hi CheesyJellybean,

When did you apply? This is the first time hearing someone not getting a place.

To be fair, pretty late. The University is so caring though! They told me to call them tomorrow so we could work something out. I don't mind living where I am now it's just I feel like everyone is making friends already and I'm being left in the dust!

Hi,

I think that might be the case then. It is good to hear that the university is willing to work with it efficiently. Are you currently flatting? If so, I wouldn't worry too much about missing out or being disadvantaged.

No I'm currently living with relatives in suburbia. It was really disorienting because uni hasn't even started and everyone was already grouped together!

Hi,

I wouldn't really say one is better than the other, but there are pros and cons to both being in a hall and being a "local". You will definitely start off different, but it's easy enough to find friends once the classes (laboratories and tutorials) begin. In terms of making friends, it's up to you, really. It depends on what kind of person you are. I highly recommend attending the PASS tutorials to meet others in similar situation as you.

Thanks Stuart:) I was having some general anxieties because my lectures are spaced out weird and I usually have to be on campus all day and I was scared I'd have no one to study with in that time ( which I guess is fine but would be nice to have someone with you)

I know somebody who withdrew from Toroa college just this Monday. So give this college a call and you might be lucky

Hi CheesyJellybean,

Don't be scared. You are going to be fine, I am sure. I know university can be quite different and challenging, even scary at times, but that's okay. That is kind of part of the experience. You are not the only one going through those feelings.

Good luck with your accommodation and study this year.

Honestly, we had two new people come into my hall like midway through the year, and they were welcomed with open arms :) .
You'll always find a friend at University, I find.
