Hi flower ^^

I was so jealous everytime I walked by Selwynn. Seriously they could get up like 1 min before the lecture and still make it on time ><

The best advice I have for UMAT is to increase your reading speed by forcing yourself to read difficult/boring stuff everyday while trying not to lose any comprehension. it will help you greatly for section 1 because gaining a couple of extra seconds in every question really helps. Improving your reading speed will also help you in your studies and other things, so it's really useful to work on it.

Personally I didn't have to put much time in actually studying because whenever I was studying I used my time really well so I got alot of work done quickly and effectively. Most days were spent moping about health sci/youtubing/chilling with people on my floor. I'm pretty sure I spent more time in lectures than studying by quite a big margin. Concentrating in lectures is alot of work too

Thanks tons! im excited:) but scared a little coz it seems that i will b putting in alot of time and hard work, will there be any time at all 2 myself?! lol what percentage of your day was spent studyin?
That time and hard work will pay off though.
Of course you'll have time for yourself. It's very important to take some "me" time. There's many hours in a day.

I got weird chicken-egg problem with fee payment that I've spotted with the Intro booklet.

It says fees must be paid by 10th Feb 2009. Now I'm getting a student loan, which only pays fees after course approval. Otago Uni admissions office tell me this approval only occurs between 23-25th Feb (16th at the earliest perhaps). Thus how can they pay the fees by the 10th, if they get wind of the approval after the 16th?

I've emailed Martha about it to clarify. I never remember having these sorts of issues at Auckland Uni. What are youse guys thoughts on the matter?

And it seems I won't get a reply until sometime after the 7th of January.

I never worry about those sorts of things. Someone's made an error but it's not my problem. If that were the case we'd have almost 20000 students unable to attend university because their fees haven't been paid :O

Assuming this was the case for this year, my invoice for the fees says "please pay amount by 10/02/2008" and since I don't seem to have been charged a late fee after also checking with my student loan documents, which paid the university on 3rd March.

Yeah I thought as much, but since a small mis-understanding and a BIG scare earlier in Nov I'm ultra paranoid about getting every little detail right. I'm a big worry wart quite frankly!

I totally understand. I was the epitome of paranoia when it came to getting all my documents for health sci admissions

Take them only if you need to. Some tutors are really crap so it might be more worthwhile to spend that hour going over it yourself.

Sweet as long as you use your time wisely then you shouldn't have to put insane hours in our anything.

You should turn up to the first couple of tutorials to see for yourself. I turned up to a few then decided it wasn't worth it for me. If you think you can spend the time better, than don't bother going to them. Also don't feel obliged or anything to turn up to them.

Oh dear I'm in the same position. Please let us know when you get the reply....really anxious here too lol.

I had 3 days to get everything together  for my initial application, including re-writing my CV, the statement for entering, and of course getting an academic transcript in less than 48 hours - sweet talked the lady in the clocktower lol. Couriered it down the day before it was due, parcel arrived with a few hours to spare.

Wow! You must really know how to sweet talk a lady :p
Was med kind of a last-minute decision for you??

Lol I read that in your blog...sounded totally intense haha.

I was in the middle of a PhD when I made the decision, but it wasn't last minute. It was something that had been considered for a loooooong time, but I checked the website then, not realising the due date for my type of application. Once I saw the date I had to harness all my bogan powers of "tin-**** getting it done by the skin of my teeth".
I actually really like to have everything nicely organised as a general rule.

Hi everyone, I'm new to this forum which I found through holiday boredom. This website seems like the NCEA Study It website, except for university students, thats kind of cool to think that I've left NCEA behind for good.
Anyway, just had some quick questions about HSFY - I am sure that I will have a ton more as time goes by:

does anyone have a textbook list for hsfy, which books do you guys think are the ones that you could not have done without -do I need to purchase all of them, or does the library have copies?

What are the essential items that you guys could not have done without at halls of residence? not things like a laptop, but unexpected things like flip flops to wear in showers so don't get...

How good is the wireless internet connection at the halls of residence -I'm going to St Margarets (I can't stand slow internet)?

Thanks to anyone that responds, I'm looking forward to meeting you guys this year.

If your room is in the middle of a floor the connection's a bit dodgy at times.

Hey Majohnna, welcome to mso :)

As Arutha said, only the epidemiology once is essential, and the HUBS one comes in second place for usefulness. You could probably get away with only buying the epidemiology one, and just borrowing other people's textbooks when you need to. You won't be studying for ages out of the textbooks or anything, so you wouldn't need to really have a copy of your own, plus other ppl aren't likely to be using it always either, so you could just borrow theirs for a sec. You'll only need to peek occassionally into these textbooks just to look up something minor.

Dishwashing liquid and sponge for my noodle bowl lol. I ate noodles pretty often when I got hungry at night, and cleaning the bowl was annoying when you don't have anything to clean with. Can't really remember any other "omg I wish I had brought this" things. Oh make sure you bring sunscreen cause it can be unexpectedly really sunny. I got sunburnt really really bad on sports day because of that :(

The wireless you'll have to use with their internet proxy which requires you to login with your uni ID, so this means they can track what websites you visit and stuff. The connection is very good for downloading stuff off the uni network like lecture audio, but not surprisingly it's nowhere near as good if you visit other websites because they throttle it like mad. That sad, youtube can go blazingly fast at 2am in the morning

Hi again, thanks for the swift response and nice welcome:). It seems cool to think that I am communicating with people that are going to be doctors -you guys must be pretty smart.

I was looking around on trade me and found this listing

https://www.trademe.co.nz/Books/Textbooks/Science/auction-195004303.htm

I looked at the textbook list that Arutha gave me and they are exactly that same -in terms of edition and author. The only problem is, do they change the edition each year for the books or do they remain the same? Does it really matter if I have a book that is out by like one edition?

I know you guys said that I don't really need to buy all the books, but this looks like a good offer. Perhaps I should wait until I go to Otago, I heard that 2nd years sell their textbooks then??

thanks:)
