Ugh, does anyone know why the pre-released question was marked so harshly last year, someone said highest was 7.5/16 last year.

Apparently they mark kind of weirdly. Someone was telling me that most people felt confident as after the exam but a lot of them didn't do well. Next one BIOC

3 to go! Homeee. Oh decent food :)

Yeah most likely because it is a PRE released one. THey would be harsh. Last year at st margs. The smartest got togther and did it sent it out to everyone in the hall, gotta thanks them for that :) But GL for the rest of your exams i start on the 28th uggggghhh :(

I was grateful enough to get help from 2 3rd year med students to do the pre released question and we're going to do a group discussion soon. :)

I couldn't study at all today... and I can't sleep :(

Well I got 12/16 so that's utter rubbish... like most of the rumours you hear in health sci.

The marking was very harsh though... I got 2/4 for step 2 and still don't know what else I could have said. Over the rest of the exam I got 122.5/132, so my mark for the pre-released question was definitely well below my performance in other areas. I think they just have very specific things they look for when marking, which means that given the very broad nature of the question and very limited space to write in, marks tend to be very low.

My advice would be to not listen too hard to what others (including med students) say to write, because chances are that won't necessarily get you high marks. Just make sure you are clear what the question is asking, get a pretty decent answer prepared, and spend most of your time studying for the rest of the exam (which accounts for 90% of the available marks and where you can pick up marks far more easily).

Wow, my friend just straight up lied to me  That B**** (yy)

He said the lecturer told the class at 2pm lecture. That the pre released question was done badly and 7.5 was the highest last year. =.=

Yeah, do you guys have any tips on how to study for Epi, i'm really struggling to learn the finer details, I think i've pretty much learnt all the concepts though. It's crazy to get A+ in Epi ><"

Fully understanding the concepts would get you most of the (non pre-released) marks in last years exam, so if you think you have them nailed then you're way ahead of the average student. As for the other stuff there's nothing for it but brute force... it's not pretty, but hey, it's just for another week!

Maybe 7.5 was the average? I could believe that...

Sigh.... thanks. Cramming it is then :(

F*** my life. There's still a few more years of Uni though.

Oh really! Lucky you. Wow they actually shared? I thought people are pretty selfish when it comes to exams!

well yeah lots of rumors about st margs were like that, but I like most considered it a family but i guess its like that with every hall :), and yeah I could also believe the mark was low, i did not see my exam paper nor would i want to but i could probably offer no advise except dont do what i did which was:

studied WAY before the exam, i then later forgot everything with the stress over maori, bioc and hubs and finishing with epi. another peice of advise is NEVER leave the exam early.
- Epi was the only paper i left early in at uni '09 and karma f*kd me by having it my lowest mark, and i felt real bad about not staying the whole time.

But other than that just make sure you nail the concepts and think outside the square, my mate gave me some advise for you saying "if you know how to think outside the square but within the triangles and circles of epi theres no reason for us not to give you marks". Epi is one of those subjects you have top do alot of memorizing but if u can understand what leads on to what systematically then i'm sure you will be fine. gg sure is the one to ask on that stuff though :)

EVEN if you don't do well its not the end of the road ay, thats never the case, just push alt + F4 and bring up them slides

2011 HSFY should be sweet, been studying at Foundation Studies all year so I'm pretty keen to start already.

I was accepted into Aquanas for 2010 but got persuaded to go flatting instead, didn't apply for 2011 hostels, going to continue flatting. ^_^

I Wish i had done foundations ben!!! got a lot of mates who did it in their first year and ace hsfy then go to med! you'll do real well bro. (P.s it sam R (SJC))?

I know lots who did foundations and got in, i think it should be the year 13. I would have gladly dropped out in 7th form just to come to otago and do foundations, prepares you so much more than NCEA. But yeah i'll be with your crew if i get med next year post grad all the way :)

Sam! :D. Hahah, thanks man.

I definitely agree about dropping 7th form for Foundation Studies, especially considering our L3 Bio didn't have any Human Body elements to it at all. <_<

Yeah actually, i looked at lvl 1 human biology and you cover a lot of HUBS stuff, yet that subject is resorted for the 'dumb people' well it was at our school :P right?

Altho it covered what was in cells ABIT

Yeah lol, I hardly realised there was L1 Bio. But to be fair, at SJC it would've been full of the ADHD kids (as a space filler). :p

We would have had to drop Chem or Physics to do Bio anyway.

Maybe if we didn't do R.E... -_-

Any bros to join the beast next year at knox?

btw, can any vetran out there tell me what i should start memorizing to gain that valuable edge? i'm keen to start...

nope, but got a few mates who'll be third year at knox, i hear its a good college. wish i chose knox and not st margs as my first. knox kids always close, even in 2nd year you can tell the knox kids come in lectures hahaha.
But do look forward to you 20-25 min walk to uni EVERYDAY and up the hill. gives you good calfs anyways hahah

I suggest ENJOY doing nothing. but the work load of first semester is INTENSE, i don't think uni can ever get that hard. Can't believe It was my best results though. BUT if your really that eager then i could suggest you try to get in physics bridging course. you get taught HALF of what you learn in PHSI191 and WORK HARD IN THAT 3 WEEK COURSE your bound to get A+ if you DO WORK HARD.
- hubs191 is pretty easy so too is cels191, CHEM is a TOUGH bugger but its all really subjective (me being bias) apparently 40% FAIL the course of 1600 or just drop out of HSFY.
ADVISE: go to ALL your lectures. i found a huge difference in GOING to lectures this year LOL - learn from them mistakes

but in all honesty if you know how to work hard AND play hard then i think you'll be fine in hsfy, theres no need to prepare before hand. I think if you can balance those then you should be fine.

The best thing you can do in your summer holiday is chill out, get a ton of sleep and rest, and be very clearly in your head why you are going to be putting yourself through hell for a year. Most students lose motivation at about only halfway through the first semester. Don't let that be you.
