I was just wondering how everyone is feeling about the upcoming year... Like are you all nervous? Pumped? Scared? I'm like a little bit of everything but I know this is what I want so...

I'm pretty keen, just want to get all the course confirmation/prelim lectures etc out of the way and start the content!

Na i'm thinking of doing around 4 hours a week, probably on weekends so i just need to manage my time really really well i guess.
I'm even looking forward to course confirmation and prelims!

yeah i think part time work is definitely doable, my friend says she knows a guy who got into med while working 20 hours part time but he was prob just crazy smart lol

yeah.. 4hours a weekend won't be so bad, I doubt 20 hours with work for many people - taking into account the time you'd take to "cool down" from work I think it wouldn't be such a great idea.

woah 20 hours...
that's like half way to being full time work...
far out. sounds like such a geeky thing to say but can't wait til uni starts...
all this waiting is driving me insane...

Nah  haha definitely not geeky! I'm really looking forward to it too. Like it's just gonna be cool...I'm interested in everything we're going to be learning. I love science! But every time I think about how much is riding on this year... AHhhh I have a little stress out!

He wasn't probably crazy smart, he definitely would've been crazy smart haha.

It is feasible to do up to 10 hours a week in HSFY, but of course ideally you wouldn't do any. Personally, if getting into med was the top priority, which it is for a lot of you on here, onsider taking a year off to work and save up money. I know it's easy to say this in a message on a forum, but it doesn't seem like the wisest choice to attempt HSFY without the finances. It means you have to work alongside HSFY, which then impacts negatively on your chances of getting into med. You only have one shot at HSFY, and you may not realise it now, but first year papers are ridiculously easy, and even more so when you compare them to 200 and 300 level papers that you may have to do for graduate entry if you miss out first time. HSFY is your golden opportunity to get into medicine, and so many people blow it in one way or another. Graduate entry, as you all will have gathered is very tough. You can always work in your 2nd and 3rd years of medicine because the timetable is quite relaxed, or take a year off during the degree for work. Once you're in medicine you're pretty much sorted. Worry about getting into medicine first and give yourself the best shot at getting in now. I know there will be HSFY students who won't agree with this post and will attempt HSFY whilst having a job...good luck to them!

Yeah, I sure won't be having a job lol I need all the time I can get! What I meant with work being doable in HSFY was that for those people who really know how to balance their time and who are real smart any ways it should be ok. For people like me on the other hand... I would die in HSFY if i worked haha

I always did suck at time management so... Not gonna risk it

Success in HSFY is completely different to success in schol. Schol is all about depth of thinking, HSFY is all about how much you can memorise. Don't let disappointing schol results put you off.

Doodle,
yea totally understand. I'm incredibly excited at the idea of uni in general but also freaking out about it too, especially the workload, cuz i'll be working part-time aswell...
but same with you, I know definitely that this is what I want to do, so hopefully I'll be motivated enough to get through it all...

I got into med, while working a part-time job, you can definitely do it!!

Otago HSFY

Hi there,
How should I prepare for Otago HSFY?
Should I have started looking at slides or notes?
Though I'm not sure how to get to them.
Do I need a lab coat?
I'm a little apprehensive as I'm in St Margaret's and I've heard it's pretty strict.
How should I balance the workload?
Which ones are the harder papers?
How do the tests and lectures work etc?

How should I prepare for Otago HSFY?
Don't at this stage - enjoy O week!

Should I have started looking at slides or notes?
No.

Do I need a lab coat?
Yes, you'll hear about this at preliminary lectures. You can get them from the archway shop in the link for $40.

How should I balance the workload?
Make sure you are up to date throughout the semester... it'll save you a lot of stress. Work out what study techniques work best for you and are the most efficient - generally these are the ones that involve doing something active with the information.

Which ones are the harder papers?
Varies by person. Generally CHEM191, CELS191, and HEAL192 cause the most stress, but it is a personal thing.

How do the tests and lectures work etc?
You'll find out in the preliminary lectures.

Look in the Otago section of this forum - there are a lot of threads there that cover all the questions you have asked. You can read through all of them if you have a day or two free (you'll probably pick up a few good pointers in the process), or use the search function for more directed enquiries.

From what I've read, I don't believe it'll be "approved" as such until we've done course approval as UO can only make a solid confirmation with StudyLink after we are course approved.

For the moment, though, PIMS Enrolment Status has "StudyLink Loan Contract Finalised: Yes" for me, while StudyLink has "Confirming Study Details" as the status of my application, which makes sense.

Do any of the ex-hsfy students want to sell their old textbooks?
I'm after all of them. Preferably only textbooks that are in excellent condition with no (or very little) highlighting.

I'm not in a hall this year so can't borrow them from others (as some people have suggested).

Cheers

I'd guess so, since some people can add/remove papers during course approval.

Hi there.
What's the best general paper to take in semester two, as in the easiest to achieve a high grade?
In Auckland everyone takes the economics paper. Is it the same for Otago?

Also I heard that in Auckland, the tests leading up the the final exams are also worth marks. Does Otago do this as well, or they simply to test where we at?

Thanks
