Good work finding that Cathay, I'm guessing it was somewhere in the mire of the last HSFY thread? :D
Its so tempting to try and work out where this cohort stands compared to previous years, but probably fruitless, I'm guessing that with such large numbers of people, the average doesn't change much between years.

Oh, and did anyone else notice that Koochkooch left HUBS192 mcq answers on that thread? Can't remember what page, but it was around the one quoted above ^^. I have, out of fairness, resisted the urge to copy and paste them :D

I got rid of the MCQs I posted, and SASOL (wow we haven't seen him in a long time) got rid of most of his. No one else bothered... I recall there's still a big post somewhere where koochkooch posted his answers to something like 15 of the questions from the first HUBS191 test.

In 2009 the average for the physics test was 10. Last year it was something like 14. You can't read too much into the average of a plussage test, but it's a shame they don't release the distribution anymore - it was a big boost for me to discover in first year that I was one of only 19 who got 20/20.

That disparity between your NCEA and 191 test is interesting frootloop - guess it just goes to show how HSFY really is a level playing field again, and how the assessment often focuses on different skills and question types than NCEA.

Just confirming, they take our GPA not our percentages from all the papers when they rank us for medicine? using GPA would mean that there is no difference between getting 90% and 99% because they both give a grade of A+. This seems counterintuitive given the amount of competition for places...

In 2009 (when I emailed the admissions office to ask) they definitely used percentages. Judging by who did and didn't get in last year they almost certainly used percentages again.

Using GPA does have some advantages, but as far as I'm aware they use percentages, so every mark really does count.

I was under the impression they used actual percentages (as indicated by greenglacier's formula to ranking scores). I recall a slightly difference in phraseology in the information booklets last year, where something else (can't remember what it was, dent? pharm?) was based on GPA, whereas med says based on results.

I believe, or at least I would like to believe, that there is a difference between a 99% A+ and a 90% A+ in the Health Science Admissions people's book...

EDIT: Ah, some much-needed reassurance from GG has beaten my post by seconds

"Admission to second-year classes in Medicine is based on the grade point average (GPA) achieved in the HSFY programme, with the additional requirements that all students must attain a mark of 70% or better in all of the compulsory papers, and a sufficient UMAT score"

https://healthsci.otago.ac.nz/courses/admissions.html

That's what the website has always said. I assure you that in 2009 (and almost certainly 2010) the website said that and they used percentages.

hmmm ok. sounds good.

this is so intense, in 2 weeks we have chem, 2 weeks later is hubs terms test, and 2 weeks after that is finals!!!! ZOMG

should i do UMAT again? i got 91st percentile and i kind of cant be bothered doing it again! my section scores were 70 56 54 for section 1 2 3 respectively. anyone know what sort of average i should be looking at to get in to med with that UMAT?

Using GG's formula and the past two years' approximate and speculated cutoff of 79 ranking score (this is from meory - please correct me if I'm wrong), you'll need a (calculated and speculative) HSFY average of 87.7% over the 7 papers, which should be reasonably straightforward. I don't think there's a burning need to sit it again, with your section scores, so if you don't want to sit it again, I personally don't see any problem with that.

Yeah i'm aiming for over 90% hopefully, just need to stay motivated, kindof starting to worry about finals though. have you done UMAT Cathay? hows the chem study?

Yes I have done UMAT (sections: 73, 56, 67), and don't intend to do it again (saving the money, if nothing else)

Chem study has yet to occur (I thought I'd take a break), but will soon...
