This is for post HSFY (whether I get into med, Physio or Nursing if I so choose :)

[offtopic] that was to correct the two posts, but i couldnt find the delete post button cause I am forumly dumb [/offtopic]

@skyglow, DW though I am interested in HUBS, I would never put myself through the agony of reading the thousand pages of Netter, though his pictures are really cool :D I did get these really cheap Kaplan Anatomy cards though (bought them cause I picked em up for only $5 on ebay) and thought that could help me with HUBS as its arranged by systems!

Honestly I am excited for HSFY, but not that excited XD

[offtopic]I understand that...but it is still a double post. If you really wanted to correct it you would learn to make use of the edit function.[/offtopic]

I am a bit confused, from which posts would you like transferred? From Hari's first post onwards?

Yeah I personally thought it would be better if they were in the 2012 thread so that other future health science students for 2012 don't ask the same questions, and also the posts don't really fit in the 2011 thread I believe.

Done. Thanks SeeKay

hi i am new here and i've been reading through the HSFY threads and i just want to say thanks everyone for putting such effort into those guides because they are REALLY helpful!! It seems like HSFY will consist on a lot of memorizing, i was wondering if trying those memory programs will help me next year and what do you consider efficient studying? I have also been listening to motivation tapes, is that a good idea?
I was thinking about sitting near the front of the lecture so i could set up a camera using my phone to record the lecturer, would that be a good idea? Or should i just use a voice recorder? I am planning to listen or watch them repeatedly maybe even before sleep. It'll be cool if everyone could share their way of studying for HSFY. Cheers
1, Please do take understanding into account... It's far easier to remember (you may not even need to) if you understand exactly what's going on.
2, You do get audio lecture podcasts. For lectures that are video-linked between different theatres (which isn't a HUBS lecture) chances are you'll get video podcasts. Also the university has policies in place against private recording without lecturer's permission, just saying...

You know, it's not so much about how everyone else study, because you're different to all of them, and it's about how you study best. I do recommend learning style questionnaires, such as the Index of Learning Styles, or the VARK system. You'll also find resources at the Student Learning Centre's page, and there are a lot of other learning information brochures you can pick up from outside the Student Learning Centre (in the ISB) when you come to Dunedin. But enough with my shameless advertising for the student learning centre (that I'm going to be working for)...

I don't even have a regular study method beyond processing my lecture notes. Handwritten notes from the lecture gets integrated with slides and typed into OneNote, up to date on a daily basis. Beyond that it's mainly tests and exams that I actively study for, poorly.

Can i give a tip to everyone taking HSFY 2012.

you will have "terms tests" that make up some of your final grade (14-20%) diff for diff papers - MAKE THE MOST OF THESE and treat them like the final exam. example; if you get 15/30 for a test that contributes 20% of your final grade then the maximum you can get for that paper will only ever be 90% (presuming you answer all final questions correctly (and you WONT)). Also putting in max effort for them will increase your understanding of material when the time comes to study for finals.

Thanks for this tip. :)

Hey guys do you know if it's possible to take a summer school paper and have this apply to your HSFY course as an 8th paper?
I realise that it's probably too late to do it at the end of your year, but I was thinking about summer school 2012 for an early start on HSFY 2012.

Also, are there any HSFYers currently at Knox or med students in their second year there? I've got SO many question about it.

hi thanks for the reply! i tried them and i seem to be a muti type..so it really confuse me..that means i can't focus on one aspect when i learn best haha
It means you'll really get the most of it by using a combination of all the methods. Don't fixate on any one thing, that is, don't do all your learning in diagrams, in writing, in talking to yourself or others, or in doing online interactive quizzes. Use a combination of all of them, and focus on the ones you are leaning towards the most, because chances are, you don't have a perfectly even distribution between Visual, Audio, Read/write, and Kinesthetic. Correct me if you do, though, because that would be interesting.

First of all, your 8th paper must be from the approved list, and I've just gone through the summer school papers list and the only one on there is EDUC102, which is not one of the commonly-taken ones for high grades, meaning that chances are you won't get a HSFY-like high grade, as explained here.

Secondly, the rules clearly say "Students may also study an optional Humanities paper during semester two, selected from the approved list" which means you'll need to take it during second semester, so I'm almost certain you won't be allowed to, it's not fair.

Honestly, don't bother with any of this 'early start on HSFY' business. I made an 'early start' by reading the textbooks in the holidays. Did not help a single bit, and I quickly got sick of reading the textbooks. Seriously, go enjoy your summer before you have to go through Hell Sci.

hey thanks cathay! Which hall are u living in? How well are you doing in hell sci? I've seen posts on the text books being useless, so i am still not sure if i should buy it or not...and should i buy those umat prep papers that cost 600 bucks and do them during the summer holidays? I didn't take umat this year, which i really regret about, but if 600 bucks can get me into med then i'd invest it for sure..what do you think? Should i do a speed reading program? Do i need to pass ncea level 3 english to get accepted into Otago? If i do health sci next year can i apply and get straight into optometry in auckland or radiation therapy in wellington? Sorry for asking so many questions :/

There have been a million topics on UMAT prep. Do a search of the whole forum to get advice on that. There's also information in the Wiki articles.

And like Cathay said, enjoy your summer. Get heaps of rest.

We cannot discuss UMAT prep courses or papers on MSO, but as it has been said, have a look around for good preparation guides.
