i wasn't looking down on it, i just havent heard much about it.Are any other HSFY 2012 staying there? Should i take the offer?
lol im doing hsfy as well and im staying at Aquinas college.. havnt heard anything bad about it besides the distance.. So yea.. Well c u down dere.. Xo

I have heard great things about it,got a couple friends living there,Its quite a distance away but there is a shuttle system every hour, so you do technically walk less than everyone else. The food is great there too apparently, (Carrington's chef moved there)So, all in all you are in for a good hall! It's just not many people apply for aquinas, but it's a really good hall which doesn't get enough recognition as it's a distance away.
thanks, that sounds great

2010 had only like 15 MCQ's I think. The exam was way easier than I expected but it was incredibly long. I was powering through as fast as I could and I didn't really finish properly. Most people I talked to also said that they struggled to finish/didn't finish too. As for the last lectures we had which were sort of guest lectures, there was absolutely nothing on these in the exam. I found the questions to be pretty standard compared to what we got in the tutorials and in the terms test.

Hope that's helpful :)

Oh really? so you reckon they are pretty similar to tutorial book qns? nothing too onerous on like the obesity lectures and self harm etc?

did you do Maori? How much did you study for it?

Thanks smile that's so helpful! Did you guys have the energy and WHO Malaria lectures last? I struggled to find the relevance of the energy lecture to the Epi course. I hope they don't ask anything about that :P Would you have any advice on how we should learn the content-specific lectures?

Thanks :)

The end lectures about malaria, climate change, outbreak ... not sure which others ... weren't in the exam at all. It was very much testing you on the concepts and more emphasised points and it wasn't about the picky details as some of the older terms tests etc. have been. Definitely know all your study designs inside out though and all the counfounding, bias etc. etc. cos obviously there'll be tons of that! I think there were some longer answer questions where you had to pick a study design for an experiment they suggested and then write about how you'd go about doing it using that study design. Really can't remember too much though sorry!

As for Maori, as long as you're going well on your essays, I don't think you need to put much time into it. Just go over all the worksheet questions quickly so you're prepared - and just skip any that are too hard/you can't be bothered because you can just choose to answer on the ones you want. Don't worry about the essay though because the standard they are after is way lower than in the more formal essays throughout the semester.

@smile
What were the Maori mcq's like were they basic...like just off the lectures slides etc...or required you to have done the pre-readings?
thanks

Also was the 2010 epi exam 3 hours long? or was it 2 hours?

Can't remember the Maori mcq's too well but i think most of them were pretty straight forward i.e. who is the god of the forest. Think there was one along the lines of what does a haka actually mean (i.e. not war dance), there was one about the organisations like the women's something-a-rather group - I didn't know that one! Personally I found the mcq's the hardest part of the test - the rest was ridiculously easy. I'm sorry I can't really remember whether or not the pre-reading stuff was in it, but I did skim read the textbook beforehand which I think would be a smart idea. Don't stress about Maori though, make the others your top priorities.

Epi was three fun filled hours! :P

(Am I seriously the only FHYS from last year on mso now?!)

Hey, just a question...
Where did you guys find out last years rank score for straight into med....all i can find is the 77.5 for the 2009 health sci cohort....people have been telling me that last years cut off was 78.4?
Thanks :)

Last year was 77.5 as well - we had a couple of members here who got marks just to either side of 77.5, so we were fortunate enough to be in a position to tell. 78.4 would be a pretty big jump.

The rest of them don't call themselves First Health Year Sciencers :P

But seriously I think you may be.[/offtopic]

So do you think a ranking score of 79 should be good enough for entry into med from this year?

Before GG takes this, I'd just like to point out that it probably would suffice, seeing as it has been 77.5 or so in the past years, and the slight increase in overall raw scores in UMAT doesn't have that much of an effect. In saying so, GG has pointed out to me once that no matter what ranking score, we can generalize and say "yeah that'll probably do it", but we never have any guarantee on anything, so in a sense we can't really label anything as "good enough" until offers come out...

I dunno if that makes sense, but in short, yes it would probably be good enough, but it'd be advisable not to set a particular goal and be satisfied with it.

And now I'll get off GG's stage :P

Cathay summed it up quite nicely :)

I'd be surprised if someone with a ranking score of 79 missed out, however there are never any guarantees, so for now your priority is to do as well as you can in the upcoming exams.
