Eh you guys will be around though right? I mean its different without the insightful (usually long but verrry informative) posts that you guys take your time to write.

All the best for next year too :P Study hard HAHA.

You guys should make a medstudent blog so that we can follow your medschool life progress :)

Everyone will be around. They better be. Else they'll have to see me angry.

All they've done is closed the HSFY 2011 thread, since HSFY 2011 is over and made this the main HSFY discussion thread.

We're far, far too addicted to this forum to leave it, fear not :p
And I'd planned on it. It'll be rambling and incoherent, but nonetheless.

Oh we're not going anywhere, but you guys will now be the main discussion-posting members of this NZ Entry forum which essentially revolves around HSFY/OLY1 - we'll be around practically everyday to answer any questions you have and give our two cents where needed. It's just that with HSFY 2011 over, as active as we may be, we are no longer the main "target audience" of this part of the forum.

Offers have now come out, and regardless of our future paths, this brings a closure to our intense year as health scis. Congratulations to those who got the offers they wanted, commiserations to those who haven't, and best of luck to those who have been placed on the waitlist.

This thread has now been closed as we are no longer health scis, and our topics of discussion now belong in other threads.

Now to direct everyone to the appropriate places:

 • For those lucky enough to have been offered med, please go to the Otago MBChB Class of 2016 thread.
 • For those on the waitlist, please go to the 2011 HSFY Medicine Waitlist Thread.
 • For those seeking information on graduate entry, please go to the NZ Graduate Entry Forum.
 • To those who have accepted an offer to the other professional courses (like Dentistry or Pharmacy), feel free to start some Otago threads in those forums (here) - and sorry for being too lazy to start them for you. :p

Once again, whatever the outcome, congratulations on getting through Health Science First Year, and all the best for the future. :)

hey guys, I was just looking around and I found this website: free stuff | aptitute
That link takes you to some free stuff out of the HUBS textbook. I have no idea how useful it'll be though, just putting it out there that this website exists :)

EDIT: apparently its not out of the textbook, but some old students notes that's been made into a book? thanks gg :)
That's not the HUBS textbook. It's a students old notes (from about 4 years ago).

That is the very book (by book I mean student notes compilation) HUBS despises and frequently warns against. There are elements of that book they simply don't like, and in fact the HUBS192 Course Convenor went out and bought a copy just to criticise it and warn people against it in lectures...

EDIT: As gg said, it's a previous student's notes, treat it accordingly.

EDIT2: Yes, there happens to be some free stuff there, including mock terms tests, but just take everything there with a grain of salt - they may have outdated information and what not.

This isn't strictly an Otago HSFY question but I really need a 2nd opinion from un-biased people because I've spent weeks trying to decide unis but that's just been wasted time.

Would you guys turn down a scholarship to do HSFY despite the fact that you might not get into Dent at all?

Un-biased? We're from Otago, of course we'll tell you to come here :p
But in all honesty, if dentistry is what your heart is set on, then you might as well at least give it a shot. No point going to Auckland to do a course you don't really want to do. @Pineapple turned down like a $50,000 Auckland scholarship to do HSFY, and it seems to have paid off for him....
Edit: What was your UMAT score from this year if you sat it? Because if you're already well clear of the interview threshold, then your chances aren't that bad. The cut-off for the 2014 BDS class was 'a low A-' (admissions office told me this), so if you're over the UMAT threshold, the marks shouldn't be too impossible to get, and so it'd pretty much just be down to the interview.

Oh, I meant un-biased as in no emotional blackmail or guilt trips about money:lol:
My self-debate so far: I could go AU for 3 years and try for postgrad but then there's about 3-4 spots in Dent for that, not to mention waiting for 3 years vs. toss the schol, do HSFY but if I fail to get in Dent all 3 years.....then it would be the same result as if I had gone to AU @______@

That sounds like he was an above average or brilliant student so he must've had a fair shot at the course he wanted to get in. Do average students have a chance at getting into the professional courses?- I'm a really average student....-not just saying that because I seem to have low self-esteem hahah

Would you rather have one shot, or three?

Well, I only just scraped UE, and have trotted out my terrible NCEA grades on here multiple times (like, I was a lower than average student), and, well, look at my sig bar. It's doable. Obviously not easy/certain, but it is certainly doable. Brains<work ethic in HSFY.
ETA: Oh, and what cathay said is very true.

I was out of school for the past 4 years. I got into Dentistry this year. You can do it too.

It's simple.

I'm not going to say it's easy.

Too true!- nothing is ever easy. I will work for it. Hopefully it'll turn out okay.

This might be a little random but do you, by any chance, happen to own the website/blog called "epikness"???

Yeah. Haha. Surprised you found it. I'm working on it with a close friend who's a Meddie. I'm Caleb by the way, or that's what you can find my posts under.

Thanks for the compliment.

Enjoy your summer to the fullest. I'll see you at the College.

Hey guys
I always thought that otago takes in your latest umat result but in the first couple of pages of this forum some of you said that they take your best result? I did umat this year and got a 62.5 for the weighed otago score but if I take it again next year, and get a lower mark, would they still use my best result from this year?(year 13)

To the best of my knowledge, they should take the highest score.
greenglacier, frootloop, cathay808 correct me if I'm wrong.

That being said, your current score is excellent.
