To the best of my knowledge, they should take the highest score.
@greenglacier , @frootloop , @cathay808 correct me if I'm wrong.

That being said, your current score is excellent.
Yep, that's right. Tonykim, the only thing you're risking by sitting it again is the entry fee.
[offtopic] Do they let you sit UMAT if you're already in med, anyone? I'm kind of sadly curious how I'd go in it with zero pressure whatsoever[/offtopic]

Yep. S'if ACER would disallow people from giving them moneyz. :p[/offtopic]

Guys, in PHSI191, its all MCQ right? But is it basically pure calculation or is it like NCEA physics where there is theory and calculation and they are basically equal?

Plus where can I find the answers to the questions in the Biological Physics text?

Yes, all MCQ.
This page should answer your second question.
And they give (some of) them to you. The textbook questions are much, much harder than the exam questions, in most cases.

Thanks Froot:) I have the 2010 one and can't seem to find them. I think harder questions are good cause it keeps you on your toes if you know what I mean :)

Oh, by 'give them to you' I meant that when the course starts they'll put them up on blackboard. I don't know how they'll do it next year, but this year we didn't get all the answers, which was a touch annoying (not that I really used the textbook questions anyway, because I couldn't do them and this frustrated me :p )

WOW like the test is actually pretty do-able. I mean there is a fair bit of calculation + there is theory ( me likey this part :D ) and the answers for the calculations are pretty well spaced so it is pretty obvious if you get the wrong answers (or atleast for some bits).

Not wanting to sound arrogant or anything :P

Don't worry, that doesn't sound arrogant, I failed NCEA L3 physics then found PHSI191 quite straightforward. They don't really seem to like doing sneaky things, the PHSI department, so if you read the question correctly, and either understand the material or have an amazing 'personal study sheet' (I was in the latter category :p ), then there's no reason you can't do alright in PHSI191. A lot of people get very nervous about PHSI, but to be honest the first semester paper to watch out for is CHEM191.

ikr? I mean NCEA crushed me and my hopes for doing well in HSFY, but because of MSO I have gained a fair bit of confidence now :)

I hear Chem191 is a killer, luckily my friends who are doing HSFY are giving me their notes + other things and in return I end up helping them by making flashcards + MCQ of old exams when applicable. I might end up sharing it on MSO when I finish them.

A lot of people think that because they couldn't get straight E's in NCEA, they're screwed for HSFY, which is total rubbish, fortunately.
Sweet, if you do, add them to the HSFY question bank thread :)

For real. LOL. I think they'd advertise it if they could.[/Offtopic]

It's nice to have all that support. (: Seems to be in short supply among HSFYers. Less so vertically, with advanced years helping freshers quite readily.

Thats probably due to the fact that HSFY's want to eliminate as many of the competition as possible. I mean that is really sad because they are turning the entry into med (and other courses) into a cut throat thing, which in theory is how we are hard wired. But I believe that we don't really need to behave in such a weird way.

I mean it would be nice to get in because you deserved it and not because you either led someone down the wrong track, burned someones notes ( I actually know someone who has had their notes burned :( ) or better yet failing to group up with like-minded people towards a similar goal.

@ Froot :) I actually plan to use a mix of studyblue.com and funnelbrain.com, study blue because it is way better than quizlet and brain funnel because that is the only site so far which allows me to make MCQ ( as I can easily memorise the correct answers to MCQ for some reason). I do hear that some papers have quite a lot of recycling questions?

My two cents for what ever its worth.

-edit (its actually funnel brain) link now corrected :)

Ok, here's a question, would y'all re-sit the UMAT if you had a 78 : 55 : 77 score, making for a 67.55 weighted score?
Also, those section 1, 2 & 3 scores would make a 67.55 weighted score right?

Using Otago's 45:45:10 for S1, 2 and 3 respectively that looks correct.

As for whether you should resit UMAT, you don't have anything to lose by resitting it. If you improve your UMAT score, then fantastic, and if your UMAT score decreases then it's no big deal because you'd be able to use the score you got this year (as far as I'm aware they take the best out of your 2 UMAT scores). The only thing you have to lose is money and I think that if you can possibly improve your chances of getting in it's worth a shot. So I guess if you're willing to/can afford to spend the money then do it.

[offtopic]Baha, I like how you edited for "grammar" and spelt it "gramer". ;)[/offtopic]

Hari : I have no idea what 'funnel brain' and whatnot are, lol. But yes, they repeat questions. Our CHEM, and CELS exams both definitely had repeated MCQs, PHSI might have, and some of the HEAL/BIOC questions were pretty similar to previous ones. As for HUBS, they clearly repeat MCQs, but as they don't release MCQs from past papers, that wont help you.
Jubs : Personally, I would do it again, just for funsies. You're pretty unlikely to do better the second time round, that is a *really* good UMAT score (ie: This year, even with the raised cut-off (78.9ish rank score), you'd have 'only' needed an HSFY average of ~85% to get a first round offer), and it's $200 that could probably be better spent elsewhere. Most people probably wouldn't bother resitting it with that kind of score though. Make your mind up after you get your first semester results, would be my advice.

Awesome cheers guys! (frootloop & mighty)

Wasn't really sure where to put this, and was a bit apprehensive about opening a new thread (though maybe the mods could make a new thread somewhere along the lines of HSFY student made resources?)

So anyway, I was making/collating flashcards for me and my friends which contains Latin and Greek prefixes, suffixes and the whole lot of them. Some of terms are for med med which may not be as useful for HSFY'ers yet, but the rest should help dissect words and pin point the location of a certain part (particularly useful for HUBS). I think if you are really keen to get into med learning the terms earlier will help you understand and dissect words later on.

Some of these terms were left over from when I did human systems in the Philippines and I thought that I would like to share a technique that helped me (and at most times saved me!) especially when I had no idea which organ/bone/what ever out of the choices was the right answer. The were collated from other quizlet users who had good terms/pre/suffixes.

s.tudy.it - tw6wao if you spot any errors, or possible improvements, please inbox me and I will be happy to edit. I will try to add pictures to them to increase chances of memory retention ,but due to time constraints plus the fact that that I have 1305 cards it may take a while!

If you feel like joining the site, inbox me so I can give you a referral link so I get a free 1 months premium membership!

Enjoy

Hari, Latin and Greek really isn't necessary for HSFY, but should be good for any who have plenty of spare time :p

Err well I think it is in some cases especially if you are in med med.

Eg if you know that the root for breasts were mam and sectomy or resection means to remove. Then you could say that mastectomies are basically breast removal/reduction.
