Is a Casio-FX one of those scientific calculators? Aww I really like my graphics :(
Yeah the 'approved' ones are scientific calculators. And you'll want to do as one of your lecturers will suggest, and spend a lot of quality time getting to know that calculator ;)

haha yeah I'm gonna have to, I haven't used a scientific calculator since Y10. I've gotten really attached to my graphics, we've been through so many tests and exams together *sniff* Thanks :D

On a small related note, one of the useful things you can know is how to store values on your scientific calculator so you can do exact calculations without rounding if you don't already know how to do this.

ello everyone, a quick question for the mods - course approval forms: how early/late are these sent? do you guys remember? I'm moving soon so want to make sure I put down the right address for it to get to me :)

Hey guys,
This is a really weird question, but here I go: do people pound on weight during hsfy?
Apparently people put on an average of 10kg during this year, because they're not exercising due to the heavy workload. How true is this? (Because I don't want to put on 10kg...)
Thanks

DreamNimbus108 I haven't had to do course approval in ages, but I do remember that I got the form before I left for Dunedin, and I left before Dunedin a week before class started.

If it's a choice between your Sydney address and Dunedin address though, put your Dunedin one - post between Aus/NZ takes a surprisingly long time.

juna The standard rule I always heard was gain 5kg during first year, lose it again when you go flatting. I don't think the weight gain has anything to do with the workload, rather with how well you get fed at the halls. Doesn't happen to everyone though - I don't think I gained any weight in 1st year.

Have you heard of the Fresher Five? It's said that people who go to college will gain 5kg of weight. This applies to everyone who go to college, as food is plenty there and from what I've heard, tends to be energy rich.

HSFY has no more actual workload than someone doing a BSc, only competitive pressure to do well. Giving up essential parts of your life (assuming you're an exercising person) just to squeeze more studying into your day is not healthy, and may not be effective at all. Also if I recall correctly, BIOC192 will tell you that putting weight on and taking weight off has less to do with exercise and more to do with eating (appetite) and basal metabolism, both of which can be heavily influenced by genetic factors.

Hey future health sci'ers! Hope you're enjoying your holidays!
I didn't put on a single pound in my first year. Wasn't living at a hall which may have helped, but I tried to do some form of exercise every weekend (wasn't too successful during the winter months) to counter for the blocks of chocolate I got through.

Regarding stationary: I spent first semester taking notes on refill and filing them in 2 or 3 ringbinders, but found that the sheets of loose paper stack up fast. A better idea I used for 2nd semester was using one of those exercise books with the metal ringed binding - pretty much refill that's bound in a book. I got through several but they were fantastic.

Also: if you plan to study at the library for most of the year, you can rent lockers from OUSA. You rent them for $40 for the year (you get $20 back as a deposit - or so it was last year) and you can get ones right in front of the science library (conveniently close to the main lecture theatre), or ones at central library. You get a key and everything. The only thing is, you need to get in quick if you want one - last year, it was a matter of lining up in front of the OUSA office on the 1st day before 9am.

I just got mine today (like 10 minutes ago :O), I think I confirmed two days ago. I live in Dunedin though, so...
(@DN about course confirmation forms...)

I don't mean to freak you out or anything, but they may have been sent by now. Last year they were printed on the 19th, and I got them on like the 21st or something. They're all printed together in one batch (at least for kiwis) and sent out together.

Not sure if there's variation to that for Australian students, but just letting you know that worst case scenario is that it's too late to tell them where to send the form.

I gained about that much last year... and I'm a vegetarian o.0 I blame dessert, enough said! Most of the people I know ranged from nothing to 15+ kg.

Seriously though it's only because at halls you get overfed (and daily dessert!)-- the proportion sizes are madness! Plus, I hate throwing food away so I pretty much ate whatever I was given (and I guess I wanted to get my moneys worth too LOL)... kinda glad to be flatting this year. I wouldn't repeat a year of eating like that for anything.

Yeah I gain a bit aswell actually. But then again im always gaining weight. But I do blame hayward college for giving me a headstart. Papermoth is spot on, daily desserts most of which are good. Plus cos im a fatty I usually got seconds for the meal and hang around for seconds for dessert. Sometimes when I was up late night studying I would order a seperate late night dinner and sneak into normal dinner aswell haha

My advice: Dont do what I did. Fat level:bobby
Surprisingly Im still hanging to 25 BMI..for now

uh oh, well there goes my plan to lose weight. >< another question - do we get equal time per week per paper (as in, same hours of lectures, same hours of tutorials, same hours of labs?)

All core HSFY papers come with 4 lectures per week + one 3-hour lab every two weeks, except HEAL192 which has 3 lectures per week + one 2-hour tutorial every two weeks. These are the official contact hours. Your college may arrange tutorials, but they are not faculty tutorials and hence are not part of your contact hours.

Thanks everyone for answering my question! and Bamboozle, is the OUSA office on campus? And yeah, me with extra ~5-10kg will be a heinous sight.... But I suppose its for one year, and I can lose the weight when I go flatting next year, or whatever :)

Yea the OUSA office is beside the union under the archway thing, it's the office where they do lost property and sell tickets to O-week stuff. You'll definitely see it during O-week.

Did anyone have problems using the printer(s) in their halls? (I mean, they do all have printers.. right? lol) Or should I buy one and have one in my room?

If you're going to buy a printer how about you wait until you've moved into your hall, the academic year has started, and you've seen how easily you can cope using the hall printers?
