According to the pamphlet (the Orientadium O'12 one) it's this competition that fresher's enter to do challenges like eating compeitions hahah

Edit/

We're not allowed Graphics calculators for some papers but are we allowed the FX82AU Plus?
I've checked the approved list and the FX82 is on it- they won't care that the one I own has 2 extra letters and a word after FX82, right? (that would be really pedantic too)

If it is not university approved yes they will be that pedantic. They will notice as in exams there are pictures of the approved calculators and they do look noticeably different. Its not something you will remotely want to risk anyway. But they are NCEA approved so I have a feeling Otago will approve also.

Well some papers it's not a problem-- I remember someone from the chem department saying that if the first part matches it'll be all sweet.

But, I've heard of an invigilator confiscating the worlds most basic calc (it was a square thing that could only add, minus, multiple and divide), because it wasn't on the approved list.

Madness.

Oooh, I don't really want to risk confiscation D: I think the shops only sell FX82-XXXX now so I'm hoping that Otago will be fine with it and @papermoth are you serious?! They confiscated those kinds of calculators???? Those aren't even as high-tech as the scientific ones

Edit/
Sorry, this isn't exactly HSFY related but I've always wanted to know, where can I buy those yellow and blue striped scarves in Dunedin?? :D

I did a wee bit of googling, and FX82AU PLUS looks dramatically different to the "normal" FX82, so I wouldn't risk having this one when your exam is "approved calculators only". The standard FX82 is the FX82MS, which is the one pictured on the uni's exam room walls (yes, they do stick up posters with pictures of the calculators you're allowed.)

For your reference, here are the pictures:
FX82MS
FX82AU PLUS
Good luck trying to tell the old ladies supervising exams that they're the same thing. I'm not saying it can't be done, but why add MOAR stress and uncertainty to your health sci exams?! As Prof Lyall will no doubt tell you in the revision lecture (if you choose to attend his stream), an important part of exam sitting is to avoid stress. You'll need to perform at your best, meaning you'll have to be very focused, which is very difficult if you've just had an argument with the supervisor and nearly had your calculator taken off you.

Now, just to clarify (because it seems unclear), different exams allow different calculators:
(Correct as of 2011)
HUBS191, BIOC192: No Calculators Allowed. You won't be asked to calculate anything.
CELS191, HUBS192, HEAL192: University Approved Calculators Only - Casio FX82, Casio FX100, Sharp EL531.
CHEM191, PHSI191: Use any calculator you want, as long as it isn't capable of communicating - i.e. no cellphone calculators or fancy iPhone calculator apps :p

On a small related note, one of the useful things you can know is how to store values on your scientific calculator so you can do exact calculations without rounding if you don't already know how to do this.

How do you do that??

Also just out of interest, who takes the Physics lectures?

@_@ Well, I don't really see the old version being sold in stores <_<. Might have to get it online. For Chem/phys are you allowed to use a graphics calc then? :D Thanks for the headsup btw :)!

Oh D: But no, you're right I'd much rather not risk it so I'll try find one of those FX82MS ones when I go out- I haven't seen those since I was in Year 9. Hopefully they haven't been phased out =S

If worse comes to worse I'll double check if the AU PLUS is fine by phoning the Uni

:lol:Thanks for the list; that'll be pretty useful.

Sigh, just get one that looks like it. Don't tell me I'm so out of touch with the world that the standard calculator at OfficeMax/Warehouse Stationery is the FX82AU PLUS...

The authors of your physics textbook :p Incidentally probably some of the most amusing lecturers of the year/all time.

Actually I believe the main authors of the textbook are the teaching fellows :P

But yes, the physics lecturers are some of the most amusing characters around, especially the course coordinator who takes you for Optics.

Yeah my mate told me after our epi test. It was noted among us as one of HSFY's saddest moments (along with another mate of mine not getting a dent interview with a 98%tile UMAT... o.0). The thing with that epi test too was you really did need a calculator as the options (it was multi-choice) were sometimes +/- .01 of each other, so even if you could approximate something like (234/478*75/767) in your head you really did need the actual answer.

I just wouldn't risk it ae?

EDIT: I haven't a clue where to get those scarves, don't think I saw one all last year tbh?

Yep, afraid so. As per crucible, it hasn't been around for quite awhile.

Edit: Yayyyy :D Thanks for finding out crucible :D

@crucinle1317 ; nice. better safe than sorry, it's always good to check with the people running the show :]

@jaficianado: :) No problem. Hopefully that'll be useful for other HSFYers

And whoops, sorry, papermoth , I didn't see your other post about the scarf. I'll ask around once I'm there.

How do you do that??

Also just out of interest, who takes the Physics lectures?

Once you have a value displaying as the result of a calculation, to store that value, you go SHIFT then STO then any one of the letters (A, B, C etc.). Then to recall the value, ALPHA then the letter you want. I'm not exactly sure that is right because I don't have my calculator with me. You can use the stored value in expressions (like how you can use ANS in an expression for the next calculation). So it can be helpful if you are doing a long calculation to store the result of a calculation halfway through.

Does anyone know what are the dates for the mid-year holiday for HSFY this year?
June exams are 6th to the 20th of June, and if past exam date trends are still going, HUBS would be Friday 8th, CELS Monday 11th, CHEM Wednesday 13th, PHSI Friday 15th. Second semester begins on the 9th of July.

Conclusion: It is likely that the health scis will be free from the 15th of June to the 9th of July. But (and this goes out to the health scis of 2012) until exam timetables come out, I would urge health scis not to make plans for leaving Dunedin (or doing anything really) between the 15th and 20th of June, as there will be a risk, however small, of having to change it due to an exam.

Thanks Cath. I was looking at the Otago key dates and thought...how am I supposed to know when HSFY exams are?!
