Hi, are the study dates/semester break dates for HSFY 2012 the same as the general ones on the Otago website? Also, does anyone know roughly what date in October/November HSFY will finish completely for this year? Cheers.

Hey when I called up the lady said that study dates are from 24th Feb to 10 Nov, not sure about the breaks though...

mango101 yes, the HSFY dates are the same as the general ones on the website, apart from your midyear and end of year breaks (as you will have guessed, you are off as soon as your exams are over). HSFY exams are normally out of the way within the first two weeks of exam period, so you normally get a longer break than the rest. I wouldn't book your midyear tickets yet. Wait for your exam timetable :-)

I was wondering when do we find out what lecture and lab streams we're allocated to? At my previous university we got to choose our lab streams but there was always a rush to sign up to get the ones you wanted - I assume at otago they just automatically allocate one to you because there are so many students?

You get randomly allocated, but can then change if you go to the relevant course coordinator/administrator with a valid reason.

Is everyone as excited as I am to start uni?

I'm sure this excitement won't last long, but delusion is warranted by the naïve soul.

How about we forget about the part when we stumble and we continue to just be brilliant. I like to imagine
HSFY as a troll monster eating my cookies. All that must be done is to kill it. That's what we'll do, kill it

HSFY is just a specific selection of general BSc papers, so naturally it will follow general dates. (Sorry if I'm bursting any bubbles, but HSFY isn't special :p)

The exam periods are listed here and as you can see, exams last until the 10th of November. It would be inadvisable to have any arrangements to be anywhere other than HSFYing until the 10th of November.

Now, if past patterns continue to hold up, your HUBS192 exam will be in the morning on Friday the 19th of October, BIOC192 in the morning on Wednesday the 24th, and HEAL192 on Friday the 26th of October. But, you're likely to be taking an 8th paper, and the exams of 8th papers don't have the set pattern that HSFY papers do, so for all we know your last exam could be on the 10th of November.

And yes, once your exams finish you're good to go, there's no "sign out day" or anything like that.

Also, don't book your domestic flights from Dunedin to home until you get your exam timetable - halls generally want you gone very soon after your last exam (this is negotiable depending on circumstances), and you don't know when that is yet. It might cost you a bit extra in airfares by waiting, but it will likely cost you more (changing fees & fare difference) if you booked now and had to change because your flight leaves before your last exam.

Hey guys, wondering if anyone can explain to me how course approval (non-distance learning) works if you don't have Chem Level 3. Do we need to do anything other than show to get the signature, and where do we go for that? Thanks :)

Before going to the Library, go to the.. whatever the gym type building is, find the Chem stand, listen to him explain that you're going to have to work your arse off, then continue as you were.

Hey guys,
Does anyone know where you can find the answers to the practice questions in the Blackman Chemistry textbook?
Cheers

If you bought the textbook new, I vaguely recall that there *could* be answers on the online resource thing that can be accessed with the code that came with the book. I may be wrong though.

Either way, once you're doing CHEM191, the department will supply you with the answers via Blackboard.

haha yes i am too! but i've been repeatedly indirectly told, that it doesn't last long, so I don't voice it much LOL.

btw, does anyone know where I can find a JP in Dunedin? I'm assuming that a bunch of here had to go do this for studylink, so i'm asking? :D

I actually got mine signed off by the JP at Student Services. It's pretty convenient.

@Insomniac, if it's the same as 2011, it'll be in Smithell's gym and the person you should be looking for is Dr. Dave McMorran.

Citizens Advice Bureaus tend to have resident JPs available. Give them a call: Dunedin Citizens Advice Bureau
